This time on part 7 of the step by step TDI swap, we're diving in to the dreaded electrical wiring. If you can spare the cheddar, a harness from Fast Forward Automotive takes a TON of the guesswork and time out of this portion. You're going to need to plumb in your factory Jeep coolant temperature sensor and oil pressure sensor for those gauges to work, but otherwise everything else is cake. I also took this opportunity to upgrade to some Mean Lemons 2 Gauge battery cables to ensure the high torque starter would have the juice it needs. Let's get into it!

I have the ALH, and the wiring harness. Once I settle on a trans, tcase, and rear axle, its all going in my dead quadratrac CJ7. I'm hoping the dirt simple CJ wiring, a GPS speedo, and fully intact vw harness (including all the dash wiring in one piece) will make it fairly painless.
@DRTJon

Unless you are actually looking forward to the wiring aspect I would strongly recommend having fast forward automotive make a harness for you. It makes it a much neater install and saves a ton of time. Talk to David there about your needs and your setup, he’s very responsive and helpful.

Can't say wiring is my favorite evening activity, lol. I took a look at fast forward. The amount of bits and pieces they have is very alluring for sure, especially that cruise control... i saw on their FB page they used to have core harness modification but I guess no longer? Just stand alone that I saw now.

I completed a 1.9 TDI swap out of new beetle 2002. Love my truck. Had issues with adapter plate. A great learning experience. I have an issue the last couple of days. First my break light fuse randomly blows. Then as I reversed and back up the engine shuts off. Now I will be driving down highway and engine will shut off. I have to shut key off and then restart. It takes several revolutions before starting.I have a brake switch logic synchronizer from fastforward and noticed it was getting hot but maybe that because I had post in between my seat and break pedal. I was testing to see what is causing the fuse to blow. Still can't determine. Stumped!

Your knowledge of doing this swap is amazing. I am not looking for a freebee, I have a 1987 Chevrolet S10 Blazer Tahoe 4X4, 2.8V6, TH700R4 trans. It was from an estate sale. I got it with the original title from the original deceased owner. It Has 62K garage kept senior citizen actual miles. it looks like it was never sat in, under the hood it looks like it is still on the showroom floor. The original 2.8V6 runs perfect but it is probably slower than most riding mowers. My wifes 4-CYL Hyundai Tucson will run circles around it. I am not looking for a race car, just one that can keep up with traffic. DCS (Diesel Conversion Specialist's) makes a complete bolt on adaptor kit for the TH700R4 (adaptor plate, fly wheel, starter and all the nuts and bolts) for a VW1.9TDI. All it would need to complete the swap is adapting the accessories and motor mounts. I want a mildly built 1.9TDI (larger turbo, injectors, cam and possibly some mild head work) swapped in it. So more HP, TQ and fuel economy. My S10 is a great looking garage queen so I really do not drive it much. Would you (for a fee) be willing to do the swap for me. cliff70chevy@gmail.com

That really depends, are you keeping it front wheel drive? Would be pretty easy to just leave all the VW drive train for that then, which would allow you to keep the wiring harness the same and basically just copy/paste. That would be really cool!

Not sure if someone asked this or not but did you use the TDI alternator? If yes, then did you connect the Jeep alternator wires to the Tdi alternator to get the gauge in the cluster to work?

I used the TDI alternator. No wires from the Jeep alternator are connected, as those were just used to excite the Jeep alternator. Your gauge will work just based off the system voltage.

I'm certainly no electrician. But could you use a relay between the cam signal wire and signal ground that uses the starter control signal to switch closed/open? The example I found online has a 12V 4 pin single pole single through relay, pin out 87 to signal ground, 30 to cam signal wire, 85 to the starter control wire, and 86 to chassis ground. That may not be the correct pin out, but I would think that would work, yeah?
@DRTJon
@DRTJon 4 года назад
I’ve tried that and it works but not reliably. No idea why the system is finicky like that. What I will likely do eventually to get a consistent working tach with no user input is to make a bracket to drive the old distributor sensor off of the accessory belt
@natemasterson1727
@natemasterson1727 4 года назад
Jon BleepinJeep right on. Figured you’d probably thought of it, but commented just in case. Does it matter if you press that button before or after starting? And does it trip it up if it’s pressed multiple times? Your solution there is definitely the most correct one, I’m just wondering if you could use the brake light switch instead, like if it has to be pressed before starting but doesn’t mess it up if pressed after starting. A video about the solution you wrote, maybe even detailing the other things you’ve tried and what you’ve found along the way that didn’t work well would certainly be every bit invaluable as al of the others you’ve made thus far!

Always good to see another episode of this swap. A few questions as usual. Any particular reason why you decided to route the relays inside the cabin? I have mine outside, under the hood in my Ranger swap, but now you have me second guessing myself on my decision. Lol Also I don’t know why I never thought of doubling up inside the wiring loom the long wires provided by fast forward automotive. I’ll have to do that. Good thinking. Also if you know where to get that plastic ECU slot that attaches to the metal ECU bracket, I would love you forever because I do not at all like my tiedown that’s holding my ECU down to my bracket currently.
@DRTJon
@DRTJon 4 года назад
I primarily chose to route the relays inside for space, but secondarily for protection. They are water resistant and mounted under hood on the VW. I’m not sure what plastic you’re talking about on the ECU everything holding that in on mine was straight from the donor car.
@RyanWithAviators
@RyanWithAviators 4 года назад
Alright makes sense. Well the plastic piece is what the ECU slides into. I believe it attaches to the metal ECU bracket. It’s no biggie, I’ll figure something out.

@RyanWithAviators
@RyanWithAviators 2 года назад
@@willdavidson4252 So I have the M50D-R1 5 speed manual transmission that's stock in the Ranger. If you go with an automatic, it would be fine except you will need to either get a standalone transmission controller or a full manual valve body. The latter choice would mean shifting every time you want your auto to shift. That being said, sometimes the torque multiplication of the torque converter would be nice paired with a TDI.

If the VW ECU wire harness still has the wires for the cruise control then it can work. All the stuff for the cruise control in built into the ECU as the TDI is drive by wire. All thats needed is the cruise on/set/speed up/slow down wired up and a VSS signal to the ECU.
@DRTJon

Yes I now have working cruise control. The only thing needed that Tyler didn’t mention are the interrupt switches at the brake/clutch pedals and it is an all 12v system controlled by the VW ECU. It's a big engine that eats fuel... And people swap it mostly on the nissan patrol... It's a damn good engine and people that swap it mostly do rock climbing and stuff like that and low end torque and lightness is the game here While the people that put the n57 engine in a off roader and this is just my opinion, they tend to do extreme off road, with big climbinga and hardcore mud and all those things where you mostly need closer to mid range torque and a lot of power to spin the wheels for cleaning... JUST MY POINT OF VIEW, I MIGHT BE WRONG 🤷‍♂️
