Step-Father of Accused Killer Teen Details Relationship Prior to Horrifying Murder

As the trial against Carly Gregg continued on Tuesday afternoon, her step-father, Heath Smylie took the stand to give his testimony on his relationship with Carly and her mother prior to the gruesome murder. Smylie said he thought he had a good relationship with Carly, and he enjoyed being her step-dad. Things seemed to quickly take a turn for Carly’s mental health allegedly leading her to commit the murder.

Fifteen-year-old Carly Gregg is accused of brutally murdering her mother and attempting to murder her stepfather in March of 2024. Sling Blade still supporting his wife's killer. SMH. This girl was only 14, almost 15/yrs. old, so she was just beginning to be a big problem. That's why she doesn't have a long "rap sheet" yet and they're making her seem like a little angel. She was already a troubled teen and headed for a "life of crime", which obviously escalated very quickly. Spoiled brat who didn't like being disciplined and being told "NO" too many times. In any event, I don't buy the "insanity" defense. She knew right from wrong. End of story. Guilty AF.

I hope the jury is more open minded than this chat. Let’s wait until the complete story comes out before judging. Opening statements gave rise to some possible mental illness. I think all kids at that age are sneaky behind parents back and I’m interested in what caused Carly to do this horrible thing. To many times we hear about kids doing this! Is it evil? Medication? Bad parents? Some how we need to find the problem before it’s too late for another family!

I'm probably wrong about how it works, but I've been getting the impression that he's trying to help her get a "she snapped" verdict to protect himself. The defense is that she is mentally ill because her father has a mental illness. If the step father says she was already evil and willing to kill, he left guns around that she could easily access. That leaves him open to charges, as seen with recent shootings. So it's better for him to say nope, she was just a normal teenager and had this sudden break.

As a prosecutor I would have asked him that question…”what was the arrangements you and your wife made when you married concerning Carly’s discipline “? “How involved were you allowed to be”? I say this because my children had to have the same respect for my significant other that they had for me and rules were rules but there were certain things that I took care of and that was an agreement we always had.

She's a little manipulator - I say that as someone who has worked as a nurse in an acute psychiatric unit. Teens are also immature, never think they'll get caught then add in a possible mental disorder, personality disorder or side effects from psychotropic medication.

As a Step father…he wasn’t really involved in her day to day behavior. The mom was the primary disciplinarian and he supported his wife. His wife maybe shared some of her sneaky tricks. The school was in contact with his wife. This guy I believe was probably shocked that his stepdaughter would kill her mother. The second part of her shooting him was a surprise. The mother was the disciplinarian. She had a boyfriend as an adolescent and this was not ok. Carly seemed like she hid her true intentions until she became EXPLOSIVE.

hard to pity this man while he continually downplays the reality of her behavior in the lead up to the event that took his wife forever. "parents" like this reap what they lazily sow. especially those who keep deadly weapons hanging out of their mattresses - and their child, known to be on psychiatric medications and has self harmed, is allowed to be aware of it's unsecured location which is easily in reach. they didn't even attempt to put it up & out of the way with even half the caution they should have had.

Poor soul. The creature that shot him and had planned to remove him from the face of the earth has had his life destroyed by that vile creature and she needs to be held accountable. Enough with the “mental illness/medication” or “she had issues” nonsense. This man is “not sure” about anything and it’s like he’s never present or involved. He’s the stepfather, married to this girls mother, and he acts like she’s not his responsibility. AND, I don’t know about anyone else, but if I lost my partner I’d be choked up or crying just trying to get through it. He’s got zero emotional response seeing a picture of his passed wife and no emotion about the constant reminder and realization he’ll never see her again. Based on his answer, “they hardly ever argued and got along great” I assume he couldn’t have been more happy with her, but he’s not even reactive to any of this. It’s not shock either! I know what that feels like, how you act and the difficulty coping. There’s complete absence of it from him.
