That was just wonderful. I met Stephane twice, and performed jazz and blues on the violin in Las Vegas. Unfortunately one time was after a bunch of people came to the venue I was playing at, right after Stephane played, for which I was at his concert and then met up to perform with a great jazz pianist from New Orleans. I almost felt like apologizing for not playing quite like the GOAT, but everybody was great, and if anything, my playing gave even greater appreciation for Stephane's brilliance, creativity and expression.
Fantastic. SG must have been about 80 years old when this was recorded. The world's greatest jazz violinist and also a massively talented jazz pianist (with an echo of Art Tatum I thought). Thank you for posting!
Truly great musicianship. I was lucky enough to see Stephane in Huddersfield and NHOP in Middlesborough (both small English towns) in the 1980s. This was at a time when jazz seemed to have a future, with new musicians coming on the scene and famous artists were performing in the most unlikely places. Now that has all gone. I saw the best of times.
thanks for lifting this lost treasure from TV archives and bringing it to us. The production quality is just amazing, it feels like sitting right in front of them
I didn't know that Grappelli also played piano. His "Satin Doll" reminded me of stand-up pianist Maurice Rocco who played it as his theme in the nightclubs of Bangkok in the early 70's.
