Championship window? It wasn't even a window they never even sniffed the AFC championship game it was nothing but inconsistency they couldn't even make a run the 2018 team with a 11-5 record couldn't even keep the game close against Indy.
They were going to hire Flores but the owner stopped it. Then they were going to hire McCown to tank the season for a QB in this year’s draft but everyone complained so the owner hired Lovie so he was the crash dummy
The purpose of it was to provide cover to the McNair family, so they can sit there and say “See? We gave multiple Black coaches chances.” This family is the ultimate plantation-mentality family.
Props to Lovie though. He knew he was getting fired months ago. He decided to go for the 2pt conversion & got it to win the game to screw them out of a #1 pick
To me, Culley and Lovie weren’t even real hires, just placeholder coaches. Similar to how we have bridge quarterbacks in the league. Only problem is these owners are putting up the facade as if they actually want these coaches to be part of the team’s future. It’s sad.
@@michaelfranks4434 wym don’t sign the contract? It’s an nfl job and in Culley and Lovie’s minds they probably thought they would at least get an opportunity to see the rebuild through not be let go after one year.
The problem with that is that the coach they actually want is not going to go to Houston after seeing the last two coaches go one and done. Houston is going to have to turn it around with a first-time coach because they are the only ones who will take the job. I just hope Houston doesn't end up with Demeco Ryans. As a Niner fan, he deserves better than that dumpster fire.
The same bs uncle tom commentary we need racism in the NFL with black coaches... aww they dont want black coaches to thrive but at the same time.. both stephen a and micheal irvin.. never speak about jerry jones.. ever not once advocating for a black coach to coach the cowboys because mike isnt the answer.. sure.. trash a organization decision.. but keep the same energy with EVERY team you speak about.. not just one..
As a Chicago Bears fan I just want to say thank you Lovie Smith it feels like Christmas I didn't want him to lose his job its call winning I thought this was why players played the games.
As a texans fan he hasn't been fired cuz we won the game. If anybody at all has watched any games, and I don't blame anyone for not, lovie has been pretty bad as a head coach with numerous questionable calls per game
Thanks Stephen A for this callout because this is what this dumpster fire of an organization needs! A reality check. This team is a joke and an embarrassment to the city of Houston.
AS A TEXANS FAN, LOVIE NEEDED TO GO. COVER 2 DEFENSE WAS GETTING EXPOSED, LB PLAY WAS AWFUL, MIDDLE OF THE FIELD WAS WIDE OPEN ALL YEAR. PEP HAMILTON DID A GOOD JOB SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON
Lovies defense needed help because the offense sucked and Mills would go 4th and out and here comes the Texans D all over again. Bro they were tired by 4th quarter.
Lovie at least needed another season. The Texans could've just hired another offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator because this year is stack full of good coordinators that lost a head coaching job. This was a bad look on the organization for firing Lovie.
They didn't let him run the defense he wanted to. He doesn't run Cover 2. During his time with the Bears, Chicago didn't play Cover 2. They played 4-3 and 3-3-5. High 3 and blitzing. That's what he wanted to do in Houston, but they didn't let him.
@@SSCyraineLovie ran dungy’s Tampa 2 defense in Chicago. But here’s the problem. That defense you gotta have a dominant front 4 on the d line, a super fast middle linebacker, and you gotta have guys that are good at jumping routes in the zone coverage. Chicago he had all that but in Tampa bay and Houston he wasn’t given a chance to turn things around. 1-2 years isn’t enough time during a rebuild.
@@houstonrockets6768 I don't see how you can really say that the difference in the teams was a tie game. They were both terrible. It's the talent, not the coaches
Honestly, I think Houston was having a tough hiring process because coaches around the league knew it was going to be a tough situation. Lovie knew the roster and the staff and had previous head coaching experience. No matter what color a coach is, Houston will have a hard time recruiting talent if the organization treats people like they treated Lovie.
Stephen A is correct about McCown. Plus, Brian Flores and his representatives filed a lawsuit against the NFL. Had the Texans hired McCown who was in High School, the Texans and the NFL would have validated what Flores alluded to.
Us Texans fans know how bad of a job our team is to coach. This team has no direction. The last few seasons are the first ones in the history of the team that they haven’t sold out season tickets. These are the reasons not to want this job no matter what race you are
@@michaelyoung2978 Or even the Jaguars, Giants, teams like that. Jets are still struggling to make it back but shown improvement. As a fan, that’s all you have to hope for. I personally understand that as a Falcons fan for the last 3 decades.
@@_Delio you’re crazy 😂 it’s not even close at least we can be optimistic about the rockets future. There’s nothing to look forward to with the Texans.
Of course they make it about race. Lovie shouldn’t have been fired but ffs it wasn’t because he was black. Only the media blames racism for a team hiring two black coaches back to back.
Michael Irvin is 💯 correct!!! 100% You play to win always. If you have a good organization, which the Texans are not, 1 number pick isnt going to determine your future, especially when you have so many issues!
I mean is he wrong tho in this case? Now i give the Texas this. They fired the last few coaches after 1 season. On the other side, ppl were saying black coaches don't get a chance. U tell me, was this team even setup to have a winning season
This is a race issue NFL organizations use black coaches to tank to get high draft picks fire them , and hire the coach they really wanted in the first place
The problem goes back before Cal. Remember this is the team that had to trade Duane Brown for nothing because he refused to play for them after Bob McNair said the "prisoners are running the prison" during the kneeling story of the NFL. That trade is what lead the Texans to have to give the farm for Tunsil. I think the McNair family is that typical slightly racist rich texas family. Now they have silver spoon Cal running the team and they are more concerned with players and staff holding Christian conservative values than being able to put together a competent football team.
The length of the contract isn't really that important. The Cardinals signed Kingsbury to a 5 year extension in 2022 then fired him 10 months later. The Colts signed Frank Reich to a 5 year extension in 2021 then fired him in 2022.
And this keeps happening to Lovie. He was fired after a 10-6 season amd making a SB during his time there. Bears aint sniffed a SB since. He went to tampa and had a qb who threw just as many ints as TDs, Lovies fired practically the same exact team insert TB12 they win a fkn SB a yr later. Texans this yr fire him cuz he won a game and they miss the #1 pick. Its almost like he couldve got more wins out of this farce of a team. He at least got them to win as much as they had, give him a burrow and a watt on defense he couldve done way fkn better. Hes an amazing Coach and i hope i get to see him coach again.
I didn’t understand Tampa Bay firing him. He went 2-14 with McCown then the next year they improved with jameis as a rookie to 6-10. They should have gave him at least another season. He built that defense that Arians won that Super Bowl with.
There is zero evidence that race is a factor in his termination. You can throw around critique on Houston's decision, but you can't just say race because you don't like something I would remind these guys , that the most celebrated person in America right now , is a 24 year old young African American football player Damar Hamlin. Stop pulling this stuff and talk about a bad decision , which I agree it is , based on the strategy. To call race without evidence is garbage.
4-13 last year without Watson. 3-13-1 this year without him. So they got worse after using the 3, 15, 37, and 44* picks with their biggest pieces having more experience. It seemed like they only started doing well down the stretch after they had all but locked a new franchise QB. *44 is asterisk because it was Metchie.
The city of Houston has a problem. Ever since 2020 it’s been downhill for you all. The harden dilema, the d hop trade, the only good thing about your city is the astros
@@matthewmartinez6922 hey I was will to sacrifice a bad football season for the sports Gods to let the Astros win....that ring ceremony going to be so sweet.
Can we stop acting like the #1 pick between the Texans and the Bears matters? They aren’t in the same markets when it comes to their first round picks. I guarantee that these teams are going to end up with the player they want, regardless if they pick first or second.
Nah you’re wrong if the bears trade the pick to someone web needy then login essentially screwed the Texans which is what put the mail in his coffin.. he dumb af
@@sethworland4514 The trade haul for Bryce Young will be larger than CJ Stroud...Trey Lance was worth 3 first round picks. Bears had to get the #1 pick because they need the assets to rebuild the team
If I'm not mistaken, Brian Flores talked about teams wanting to loose games for draft picks after his firing. Now that it happened to Lovie Smith these guys should be bringing up what Brian said but I guess there's a gag order on anything dealing with his case.
This is not a racial issue as stephen a always make it to be. Its a performance issue. Where was lovies aggressive performance through out the season. He punted the ball away the previous time he faced the colts with a chance to win. He waits till the end of the season to go for it? Knowing full well he is losing draft pick no 1. In his mind he knew this was going to hurt the texans fanbase. Im more pissed he didnt have the guts to coach aggressively for 17 games and on the last game he shows what we could have been.
@Wheels and the Legman thats exactly my point. Bringing up racism when its convenient for you draws away attention from real racists like you. You oviously disagree from my opinion. And im definitely not interested in hearing out your limited biased perspective. Having a battle of wits with a witless idiot is not in this beaners interest. Lovie smith is a unispiring coach. He would have played the season like he played last game i would have issue with his firing. I dont worship any race. Its a matter of fact. You should relinquish your job if you cant perform adequately. Regardless of race.
Facts if you didn’t know any better you wouldn’t even know the Texans went 3-13-1 with how Stephen A and Irvin are talking. They actually acting like the win against the Colts is the sole reason he got fired 😂 and where was all of this talk the Michael Irvin had during week 1 when Lovie settled for a tie instead of trying to go for the win
That same dude hired 3 black coaches in a row tho😅 1 year later and this aged horribly. Division Champ and none of yall talking with ya chest now 🤘🏾😂🖕🏾

Lovie sucked as a head coach way before going to Houston, has nothing to do with skin color. Cant blame skin color on his agent getting him a poor contract. The GM should have told Lovie they wanted specific players in the game for evaluation if they wanted to secure the 1st pick in the draft next year.
No - that's just the circular logic that you tell yourself to excuse your racist beliefs. The McNair family needs to be investigated from top to bottom for literally firing a coach for winning a football game. These are bad character people, man.
it's about race, because the texans have hired 3 coaches in 3 years and they all got 1 year. the texans history shows it's about race. Dom Capers - 2002 - 2005 Gary Kubiak - 2006 - 2013 Wade Phillips - 2013 Bill O'Brien 2014-2020 Romeo Crennel - 2020 David Culley - 2021 Lovie Smith - 2022 it's not rocket science.
@711bogdan because it looks good on paper and they know they are not going anywhere anytime soon. So this gives them an easy exit option when the team loses as expected. Plus the extra draft pick when they hire a minority coach helps. Romeo crennel was an interim coach, he shouldn't count. It was obvious that they wanted to hire Josh McCown last off-season but couldn't because of Brian Flores lawsuit.
@@jessemartinez8022 it would have been better for Lovie had the Texans not wasted his time and just been allowed to hire the coach they actually wanted.
While I agree with Stephen A. that they mistreated Lovie, let's get real about the race issue. The Texans NEVER wanted to hire Culley or Lovie. They should just hire who they want to hire, and quit placating for PR reasons. They make themselves look worse, and are going into serious debt with the one and doners.
Eric Bienemy definitely needs to be better when being interviewed. Could’ve had a job already but he’s got major issues. 1. He’s got a long record off field stuff like charges. 2. Apparently during interviews he’s got what people call a sailors mouth. Understand he’s probably being passionate but he can’t be cursing crazy in interviews. By the way this is coming from Jake Asman who works for ESPN radio in Houston.
@kp1888 you must be a casual that just found out about him since he's been successful at KC. They're holding his past against him. It should be bygones and he's paid his dues but with this cancel culture no one will hire him.

He’ll most likely take over for Andy Reid which by the way I prefer more than him just leaving for another job.
Why can you do actual research but these idiots just blame everything on race. I been thinking this though , Benemy has interview with multiple teams and black coaches have hire after him. It's a Bienemy problem..

The highest paid man at ESPN is a black man. Golf....black man.......NBA......black man.........stop with the race bs
It's also about using your power and privilege as a white person to actually DO SOMETHING about the problem. Listening and understanding is just the start.
He knows he can't push back or he'd be called racist , and we can't have dialogue anymore , so it's no win for Dan ,or anyone who disagrees when a black person cry's racism. Even though a rational ,not race baiting person could challenge Stephen As argument

Even texans fans know, its the owners who are the problem, they are too religious, low key a little racist. The people of Houston and the fans are great people and we will rise like the Astros did, you cannot hold this city down. Believe that.
nah us texans fans were begging for his head to be chopp off jk, we did want him fired. So this fan comment he isn't a true fan and don't see him in any of the texans channels. Lovie deserved a second year at least. This was a tank year for the Texans and Lovie did what he was supposed to, until he found out that he was fired no matter what. But at least they did guarantee Lovies contract.
It isn’t woke, it just facts. Majority of white head coaches get a job that they don’t deserve. Majority of the league is black but majority of the coaches are white. If you do not see the problem, then I dont know what you are smokinh
Do I think Lovie got the short end of the stick here? Yes. Do I think it has ANYHTHING to do with race? Absolutely not. This is an embarrassing segment tbh. Hackett and Urban Meyer got laughed out of the league in LESS than one season. How about the never ending revolving door of NY Giants coaches the last 5-6 years?? I get that the Texans were not supposed to win this year but you could also say the same for the NY Giants. They were supposed to be a rebuilding team in the bottom 5 of the league with no cap to work with. I think losing the #1 pick was just the straw that broke the camel's back.
I think Lovie would have been fired regardless of yesterday's result. If anything, having the #1 pick would make the coaching job more attractive. I agree with you about everything else though.
Lovie should have never got the job to begin with. He only got it because no real head coaching candidate wanted to come, plus he was already the defensive coordinator
@@bobbythorton7693 I’m not black and I’ve been a fan my whole life, but I’m not saying this as a race thing. All I’m saying is that we have cut the last two coaches after one season, so there been no time for change to take place or any coach to get their footing in. After the 2020 season we needed a change in the positive direction after Bill O’Brian blew everything up. Getting coaches and getting rid of them despite them not having any talent for them to work with us not a good thing. Lovie I think is a good coach I mean he’s made a Super Bowl, but we have had little to no talent the last 2 years and it didn’t help that we didn’t have as many picks in the past as we like (2020 no first or second round picks). If we keep hiring and firing we’re not going to improve. Lovie wasn’t perfect but it’s not like the owners are anymore perfect. I blame the owners more than I blame the coach, at least for me.
Terrible teams tend to have coaching vacancies. Not many 14-3 teams are canning their coaches. Now I think Lovie Smith got a raw deal here, but I'm not going to give credence to Steven A's baseless race-baiting rant.
It's better maybe to not hire black coaches, because if you fire them you are racist. If you fire a white coach your not racist. Best to be safe and not hire a black coach. I'm black btw
