Stephen A. Smith usually talks bullshit, but when he makes sense, he makes it worth listening to. Dude was straight 100% right. They went to 3 consecutive nba finals, won 2 championships. If they had met just 2 or 3 years earlier, like back in 2005-06 when Kobe was at his pirme -prime, they would've gone like 4 or 5 straight. Sure they gave up Marc Gasol, one of the best centers today, but Gasol rose to prime at around 2011 ~ 2012. Kobe was 34 back then, no way they could've made it what Kobe and Pau did.
+Think Blue exactly same way when Kobe was Traded for Divac People was saying the Hornets got away with One but now looking back at It everyone say the Hornets got robbed 1 team was trading for the future and one for present day that's what people fail to realize
Think Blue yea, but Marc didn't develop for a few years, pau was already at top of his game, they won 2 titles with pau..marc has zero and will never win one. bad statement but I feel ya lol
+tom thrusterman The lakers could get better down the road letting those younger guys play and you guys could get a franchise player in brandon ingram or ben simmons depending on where you land in the draft, but you should definitely be top 2, then you have russel, and julius randle, jordan clarkson, nick young and larry nance jr, and is a bunch of good pieces, plus luke as your head coach. That is a promising future. And you might get westbrook and durant down the line.
Great trade for both teams. Luckily for the Grizzlies tho they're still reaping massive benefits of what they got in return. Cannot say the same about lakers, but hey fuck it a couple titles makes up for it
@@kohsmoger1567 Pau Gasol being there wouldn't get them anywhere. They needed to rebuild and get some draft picks... Ain't no FAs ever going to Memphis lol
"Did the Lakers give up too much?" Do the people over at sportscenter even know basketball? What kind of stupid ass question was that. The Lakers got the steal of the year!
This trade still blows my mind to this very day. The Lakers won that year’s trade deadline QUIETLY. Stephen A and this other dude are talking about it on this video, but back then the most talked about trade was the Trade between the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns.
As a Die Hard Lakers fan, I remember being in a barbershop on a Friday after school and Lakers was about to play a game. They said first that the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol and I was like "oh wow, that's a big deal! Who we give up?" And then they showed the actual trade on TV and I seen we gave up Kwame... the whole barbershop was excited! I knew we was going to the Finals that year!!!
Aww Man this is one of my favorite Steven A Smith rants of all time. Man i miss this guy. Wether u liked him or hated him the man knew what he was talking about in terms of basketball
WOW the 2nd trade of the Decade. The first being KG to Boston. Hopefully we can get Bosh this off season to team up with LBJ and make us title contenders for the next 5 to 7 years
BREAKING NEWS: Los Angeles Lakers 117, Orlando Magic 113 Kobe Bryant 36 pts, 10 rebounds, 6 assists Pau Gasol 30 pts, 9 rebounds. 3 other players in double figures... WHO CAN BEAT THE LAKERS WITH STATS LIKE THIS?
Most people think that this was a bad trade for Memphis and turned a good one because Marc Gasol became a great player unexpectedly but everyone who had seen him play knew he would be a great player. At the moment of the trade, he was dominating spanish league like nobody had done since Sabonis.
Thanks for your two cents. Instead of the Lakers being contenders 100% of the seasons, they're contenders 95% of the seasons. Your basketball knowledge amazing. I have learned a lot from your obvious intelligence. You have set me straight and now I know that the NBA is not a complete sham. We're done now.
imagine Kobe, odom, bynum, "marc" gasol, ariza, fisher. Lakers would been better down the road if Marc showed promise back then before Grizzlies. Marc carries a team further than Pau. Before last year, Pau never won a single playoff game and never past the first road without Kobe
marc wouldve matured too late...it wouldve been great if they got to keep him and still get pau...imagine both gasols, ariza, kobe and either paul or deron williams, who were both available at the time in exchange for bynum
When you have a frontcourt like Bynum, Odom, and Gasol(if he learns the triangle well), and you add Kobe, and Fisher to the mix, and don't forget the Laker Bench which has a lot of depth btw, this team has the potential to challenge Boston or Detroit for the NBA Championship.
Gotta love Steven A. The Lakers are scary good now. As long as Bynum comes back healthy they will be a major force in the West. It's starting to look like the good old days once again. Long live the Lakers/Celtics rivalry.
people hate on him because he talks really loud sometimes, but the guy is very informative and knows a lot of people. he's not afraid to speak his mind. i like the guy
you're right now that i think about it.. coz shit, they still got Radmanovic.. still got Farmar, Walton AND Turiaf.. the Lakers are just in a great position right now... honestly.. it's feelin good to be a Lakers fan these days.. REAL good.. it was good already with Bynum.. and now it's like.. damn..
Kwame was just an expiring contract thrown into that deal. What the Grizzlies actually gained from this deal were two potential up-and-comers in Javaris Crittenton and Pau's younger brother Marc (arguably the best center in Europe right now) as well as two first round picks for this year and 2010. Come to think about it, this may have been the best trade either team could have done... ;-)
@jstone4893 you mean 2 early second round picks? Because Memphis was well aware that LA was going to be title contenders for the next 3-5 years, considering that's the primary reason Jerry West initiated the trade.
