Ricky Gervais said it best "If every Holy book and every Science book got destroyed, all the science books would be exactly the same and the holy books would be completely different."

Ricky Gervais fails to realise that science owes its entire foundation to not just theism but to Christian theism. He stands on the shoulders of giants while attempting to kick the legs out from under them. He is a hypocrite.

@@briancox9357 Untrue. Religion is science before your very eyes but you can't see it. The memes ingested by developing infants whilst their brains go through vulnerable formation stages - will return in exactly the same way. Only names change through the generations as they discover what is more effective. Reptilian stage Mammalian stage Executive Function stage Each violated mind, given preferential characteristics and those cursed with hate crimes. Promises of peace from ever being stressed in this life or the next. In return, is their obedient servitude without ever knowing it. Edward Bernays in the early decades of the 1900s easily got females to smoke cigarettes by calling them "Torches for Freedom". Masturbationalists for freedom. Wokeness for freedom. Submission for freedom. Pride Months of intense consolidation. Therefore, Holy Books like the European Human Rights Act - one law for the powerful and one law for you - will always be reassembled. And you will be forced to subsidize it; or imprisoned at best. Religion. Definately science at work.

But that is completely false. The library of Alexandria was destroyed and the textbooks which has followed has not been able to build the pyramids or make sense of things which seem to be known before. Neither the Holy Books or Science books remain the same, and neither should they if they were evolving and progressing. The Holy Books would not be and have not been completely different either, this is totally false. The morality taught in religious books today is virtually the same it was 4000 years ago with a few evolved or progressive ideas, as it should be. The same is the case with science books, as it should be. Ricky Gervais needs to update his knowledge of both science and scripture, for the only thing which seem to remain the same is his ignorance!

The argument is very weak. If there is no God, no creation, no purpose with life then of course bone cancer in children means nothing. Nothing means anything. Fry is (though he believes he is) not an atheist. He critizes organized religion. Not faith. Believing in God (whatever God is, we only have the word) is believing in life. In that life has value, meaning, importance. Atheism is nihilism. If there is nothing, then there is nothing. No love, no meaning, no good or bad and bone cancer obviously doesnt matter. Get it?

Here is an interesting take on that - since God created us with a completely free will, we have the ability to choose what we beleive. If we reject being with God as Stephan says then that is his choice, it would be terrible if God forced him to be there with him so God made another place where those who don't want to be with him will be able to do as they please ... some people call it hell but it's actually just a place where God is not which sounds kind of pleasing but where God is not means that you can do as you wish, meaning anything you want to do is acceptable you can be as bad as you want and we know that people can be quite bad. So Stephan and anyone else is totally free to choose that is one of the amazing things about freedom of choice it is even more free than the freedom of speech which is not really free.

Atheism and deism are being told with stories like denial is a fashion, they are trying to spread it, but it is empty and wrong. For billions of years, people have believed in the governorship of Allah. It is in human nature to believe, to pray, to do good, there is a feeling of doing good, it is Allah who created this, nothing changes with the denial of the person who denies, there is Allah, billions of people believe in prayer. and it is Allah who gives the answer. For example, if there is a drought or it does not rain, who can change this? Can a person make it rain? or if there is a flood, earthquake or fire, from whom do you ask for help? , we will die. On the day of judgement, we will be held accountable for what you have done. He who does good will be rewarded with heaven, he will be abundantly blessed, and he who disbelieves will remain in the fire of heaven. This is a very clear fact. Islam says that Allah exists and is one, and people flock to Islam and prefer Islam.

It's easy when you know that the god of Abraham is an amalgamation of ancient gods from a pantheum. The angry god is the desert mountain thunder god who was bloodthirsty in randomly killing people in flash floods. It was first followed by bandit groups. It's name is Yahweh. It was merged with other gods while the Jews were trying to create a national identity through an amalgamation of borrowed myths from other nations that were popular. The main one being El. This was a grandfatherly god of boons who especially cared for children. The nice elderly guy with a white beard who is kind to its followers. This is why the Hebrew god is bipolar. At one time the god of blood sacrifice and death and other times the one who cares for everyone and forgives people. Neither are real and the combination is especially unreal. Mostly because the ancient Jews got their butts kicked a lot and wanted people to take them seriously. Tall tales and borrowed stories to feel better about themselves and justify genocides that continues to this day. I'm not claiming them to be worse than anyone else. Or not worthy of being a people or to have an identity. I just mourn that this effort has caused so much death and suffering throughout history. What was once just people making stuff up to feel better about living has become excuses to end other people's lives. People should have grown up by now.

Logic spoken in the sublime and beautiful way that only Stephen can deliver. Christopher was similar but doesn’t suffer fools so many found his delivery too arrogant. Ricky may not be taken as seriously as he should because he is a comedian. Sam and Richard are again incredible but can come across a little dry to engage people outside the sphere of atheism. Stephen gets the balance of delivery perfect between respect, logic, humour, humanity and eloquence. But then again, many religious people won’t even give him the time to listen to his genius arguments simply because of his sexual orientation. What a world.

I watched a documentary video 20 - 30 yrs ago, if I remember correctly is was called “god on the brain” and the basics that I remember from it is we all have things that make us happy and also things that make us unhappy. This was plotted by monitoring brain activity during conversations about various random subjects. In short after testing thousands of subjects science concluded that the same areas of the brain (areas related to pleasure/happiness etc.) lit up (became more active) when ever the subject talked or was engaged about their prefered preferences. The same areas of the brain lit up in the football fan when engaged on football as with the skateboarder engaged discussing/watching skateboarding, religious person talking/reading/viewing their chosen religion. They all gained happiness, pleasure, contentment out of their chosen subjects. Understanding this has allowed me to keep jehovah’s witnesses and mormons standing at the door for hours trying to convert me, as in my mind I am giving them the pulpit they crave to stand at, it makes them happy, and at the same time I am saving some other poor wretch from suffering that fate I am then subjected to. Levity aside take what makes you feel happiest, what makes you feel good about yourself, then think how you would feel to have that feeling taken away from you and that is what you are contemplating subjecting your religious friends to. Is that really helping them????

I was raised Mormon. When raised in it, many don't question. Mormonism teaches members to seek answers from scripture and words of "prophets", and not outside sources because all that is anti-mormon and they'll lead you astray. I left about a year ago, once I started to learn the truth and I was, still am, very upset that I was duped for so long. I'm nearly 39. Glad to be out now. All my of siblings have left as well, but not our parents. Fortunately, we all still have good relationships with one another, but for many, that's not the case. I've heard many stories of parents essentially cutting off their children if they leave the church. I'd call myself agnostic now, but my belief that there could be a god is about 5% at best.
@cupiddstunt

I have posted elsewhere on this thread about you question. Hunt for a video called “god on the brain”. Basically it’s a documentary about a socio- scientific experiment which uses brain activity monitoring to show that we all have “happy places” in our brains. These “happy places” all take different stimuli to activate them. For a football fan, football switches them on rugby fan, rugby and so on. Some people’s pleasure receptors switch on with religion, most know the anti arguments, but believing in their chosen god/s takes them to their happy place. It has also been proven that the majority of people like to be told what to do (which is why we have governments). And religion does this to all followers. And if you do not believe people like to be told what to do go look in the mirror. And then into your kitchen cupboards, then see just how much overpriced shit tv advertising had made you buy. Go for a walk and look at all the sheeple walking by in the latest fashions. It’s also addictive.

Myths, legends, fairytales and religion were all born of the same cloth. Myths, legends and fairytales were stories told to explain what was not understood. @kenhunt4356
@kenhunt4356 6 месяцев назад
I will give you credit for a partial truth. There are many who have come up with a religious myth to explain the unknown or unexplored, however I think they do so at their own peril. Furthermore, it is not even remotely fair to only place such at the feet of the religious. Granted, if one could prove there is no God the only logical conclusion would be that the universe and the evolution of life MUST have somehow come about purely by material means, and such must have at the same time precisely followed the fine-tuned laws of physics and astrophysics to have success. But apart from explaining repeatable principles of physics and natural processes, as most of us agree is how we create many great modern conveniences, there is a tremendous amount in the universe for which an explanation of origin is completely beyond laboratory science. I applaud those that postulate theories for many to dream about proving, but it is amazing to me how the public will readily swallow some scientist's fancy-sounding theories as proven fact and not notice the ideas are never repeatable and have not been observed. It escapes many of us that some of these theories are perhaps emotional mechanisms themselves, albeit of a more complicated nature, but nonetheless meant to weave a story to explain the unknown. Consider living cells. With the most sophisticated microbiological science today we still have not come close to creating life no matter what the titles in the sensational articles say. Articles are written about science being on the cusp of creating life, but if you read the whole article, you will often only see breakthrough discoveries in microbiological protein creation or protein self-duplication. Those on the cutting edge of microbiology will admit we have capability to only make very rudimentary amino acids which only go a short way in building parts for living cells. Even creating these require much intelligence, skill and equipment. Not a strong case for life happening under a rock or near a volcano vent. In laboratories the amino acid chemical processes must be stopped and preserved at certain stages to prevent the chemical process from continuing on and destroying what has been made. In such articles the part about actually creating life is still admitted to be an as yet unrealized hope. Even though great strides are made in microbiology the discoveries about the complexity of the needed cell structures means the industries are actually finding themselves farther away from the target of building the basic components needed for a real living cell. Even if we could figure out one day how to build all the components for a “basic” cell, we then still have no understanding of how to make the cell alive. What’s life? It gets worse. How do we build in to a new cell the programming to make new cells before it dies? Inside each cell are all these little amazing machines with highways, factories and the programming to make the protein parts for a new cell and then the programming for how to assemble them all together in the right order. Folks, this is far more complex than any computer program we have ever seen. When have you seen a computer just decide to write its own software? Fry postulates religion as an evolution of the ignorant, and for some examples he may be right. But, isn't atheistic views toward the creation of the universe and evolution of life also a very devoted and narrow religion itself? Not only that, atheism seems to be completely closed to any view outside its own. To me, it seems folks who cancel views of those who disagree with them don’t really do their own case any favors. What does it hurt for a person to actually make a search for the one God to see if He left us a first-person written account that invites us to actually make an honest and reasonable examination of the physical world and see if what is discovered backs up what He claims? That should be pretty doable. There have been many who have done so and are surprised and changed by what they find.

Atheists have no scientific explanation for the life appearing without God, since abiogenesis and macro evolution are proven fictions by both theoretical and empirical science. So atheism has no science behind it, only the hate for not only God but for the very idea of God. Atheists claim that God (Lord Jesus) is not falsifiable, so you can't disprove him. Lord Jesus' existence however is falsifiable. If you can prove … 1. that life could have started by abiogenesis against the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, 2. that a Universal Common Ancestor has existed and has been able to produce Hox genes for constructing future generations, 3. that while being an asexual organism UCA had genetic variety for natural selection, 4. that species have produced new genera while they only have genes for their own species, 5. that empirical tests show that mutations generate new life forms and new body plans, 6. that abiotic matter has independently started to plan, organize and produce the immaterial genetic information needed for all living organisms, 7. that human DNA with its 3 billion nucleotides got arranged in exact order in a random process that destroys the DNA by a handful of errors, 8. that intelligence can appear from a non-intelligent source, 9. that matter and energy can appear from nothing. If these are proven, we can discuss the possibility of a world without Creator.

I don't know what dimension you're using to measure this matter of being "greater." It seems to me that you're only trading off two failed systems against each other. Irrational belief - or even worse, belief on faith - is demonstrably unsound. A billion individuals could have a billion different individual irrational beliefs, all mutually incoherent, and mutually irreconcilable too, since each person's belief is entirely reliant on that person's internal sense of conviction. This is merely stochastic noise. But on the upside, it does promote individual freedom. Religions, on the other hand, while equally irrational and based on faith claims, attempt at a kind of unification through authoritarianism. The upside here is the unification, though it comes at the heavy cost of personal autonomy. Many people engaged in the same project can do impressive things, far more so than a random collection of individuals with personal beliefs. But there's no assurance that those impressive things are in any sense good. They might be horrific.

The Australian Aboriginals have a concept going back to the Dreamtime, called KANYINI - the Connectedness of Everything... An imbibed essence or spirit that dwells in all of us and all of Creation... Fry is wonderful, but I strenuously disagree with his agreement on the claim: "Any single person who tells you that they know what happens to a human being after they have died is either a liar or a fool." This is ridiculous because it places an epistemic burden only on human expiration that we'd recognize as unreasonable anywhere else. We know, as much as we know anything, that humans are made of the same physical stuff as everything else in the world, and all reliable evidence points to our conscious selves being dependant upon our physical brains, and when people die we observe the entropy, the disintegration of that consciousness and person. There is no more reason to think people continue on existing somehow than there is to think a fire continues to exist in some other magical plane after it has gone out. The fact anyone can simply raise the idea of an afterlife in no way compels agnosticism on the subject! One could raise the prospect to astronomers that the moon is actually a clever illusion, an outpost created by inter dimensional aliens to spy on us, using technology well beyond our means of detection. Does this mean scientists need to suddenly become agnostic about any conclusions they have of the moon being just a natural rocky satellite orbiting our earth? Of course not. We never have possession of Absolute Truth so we are always coming to the best conclusions we can based on the evidence we have, employing tools like parsimony etc. The person suggesting some fantastical idea has the burden of proof, it is not on the recipient of the claim to re-adjust their conclusion to that of agnosticism on a subject for which they have good reason and evidence. Until someone raises more than the mere suggestion of an afterlife, or waves old books in our face, we certainly can say, to the extend we know anything, that we know what happens to humans after they die. The physical body that produced their consciousness decomposes, and with it that person.

It comes from the thought pattern of many atheists who think they are smart but in reality understand nothing. First of all, our personality, our consciousness is not our body, but it is our soul that is in our body. This world is full of challenges. God doesn't want puppets, but he wants people to do good for themselves with their free will and to build a relationship with him. God is never evil or arbitrary, but He wants people to grow spiritually. Bad things like bone cancer can cause a change in consciousness in people. As a former unbeliever, I also had to learn this. *"It comes from the thought pattern of many atheists who think they are smart but in reality understand nothing."* We'll see about that. *"First of all, our personality, our consciousness is not our body, but it is our soul that is in our body."* This is factually incorrect. If we alter the brain in any way, our behaviors and personalities will change along with it. There is also no good evidence that a soul exists. In split-brain patients where the corpus callosum has been severed and the brain develops two separate individuals able to do different tasks, which of them gets/has the soul? *"This world is full of challenges. God doesn't want puppets, but he wants people to do good for themselves with their free will and to build a relationship with him."* Right.. "free will", yet if you don't do what your god says, he will send you down in his torture chamber so you can be tortured for eternity. We have as much free will as when a robber has a gun to your head and says "give me all your money". Also, if he wants a relationship with us, why is he hiding? Why doesn't he prove his existence objectively to everybody? Is he too weak to do it (all-powerful)? Is he not willing to do it (wants a relationship with us)? Does he not know how (all-knowing)? *"God is never evil or arbitrary, but He wants people to grow spiritually. Bad things like bone cancer can cause a change in consciousness in people. As a former unbeliever, I also had to learn this. And I am grateful to God for allowing me to learn my lesson. And if people stop their wickedness and disobedience and obey God, then all the misery in the world will end"* So he is "never evil", yet he set up a system of survival of the fittest where the only way for some animals to survive is to brutally kill and ingest other animals. What about when he created diseases and parasites whose only purpose is to dig into people's eyes and eat them from the inside out? What about when innocent children die of cancer? Advocating for atheism means advocating for monstrous world ruled by people like Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao Tsedong, Kim Jong Un etc. ... World ruled by Lord Jesus is the world of honesty, benevolence and love. Limitations of Naturalistic Science: Constant pursuit of knowledge, embracing ignorance, and excitement of discovery only to learn that all was misconception. Atheists use methodological naturalism for research. Methodological naturalism can hardly be called scientific because real science does not set preconditions. Naturalism sets the precondition ”there is no God”, which violates the principles of scientific work. The possibility of life appearing through a random process is figure one against a figure which contains 40 000 zeros. The mathematician Sir Fred Hoyle stated that this relation is enough to bury Darwin's theory of evolution. The real scientific conclusion here is of course that randomness can't produce DNA. That's the only possible choice when we think scientifically. Atheists however choose the most unlikely choices as long as they fit in their atheistic worldview. Is this scientific thinking? Of course not. It is based on prejudice, and prejudice is an anathema in science.

A rather trite statement that is as empty as the statement itself.

@@cupiddstunt It seems you have an addiction to the "trite" statement, "empty statement". Have you reread what you wrote? It makes no f'ken sense. My empty statement is an empty statement? That is a redundancy and you are an idiot. My statement may have been trite to you but it makes it no less true. Religious people are pathetic children looking for a protector to give them solace because of their fear of the unknown.

I am a MagnaCrepitist. I believe the evidence for the Big Bang, which my favorite astrophysicist and marvelously inventive SF writer Fred Hoyle, my hero, *_did not_* , and gave it the name that has stuck. The Big Bang started as something not of zero size, but by the rule(*) that makes hadrons (neutrons and protons) a thousand times smaller than electrons, because their mass is a thousand times more, the Big Banger particle was by its ginormous mass ginormously smaller than a neutron but *_NON-Zero_* in size. It is really Very Shocking that there was a First Event that had No Cause, because if it had a cause it wouldn't be the First Event. Inventing an Intelligence to invent the Big Banger is no help at all, if everything needs a cause you have the Divine Watchmaker problem, an infinite series of Watchmaker-makers. (*) I think it's Heisenberg's Uncertainty Rule.
