Are you sitting comfortably? Join Stephen Fry - multi-award winning comedian, actor, presenter, writer, and masterful storyteller - as he at last tells the passionate and powerful story of Troy. Curl up on your sofa as Stephen brings to life the legendary kidnapping of the beautiful Helen, for whom the Greeks launched a thousand ships and lay siege for ten bloody years; king of the gods Zeus, who triggered war when he asked Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of all; and the terrible, brutal war with casualties on all sides.
Stephen Fry celebrates the launch of his new book Troy, following his bestsellers Mythos and Heroes, by sharing the heroism and hatred, revenge and regret, and desire and despair - and showing how these human passions still speak to us today.
Don’t miss this one-off opportunity to join one of Britain’s best-loved authors as he invites us to join him at the fireside to hear the greatest story ever told.
A Night In with Stephen Fry was originally broadcast on Mon 30 Nov 2020.

What the hell!?! Why'd this stop! I was prepared to listen to this forever more. Would someone kindly kidnap Mr Fry and politely force him to tell this story for years on end.

@@brianmckay1256 Ok, hang on a sec. When I said someone ought to politely kidnap him, I was of course suggesting that I should probably be invited along too! Someone needs to be there to make him drinks, fetch sandwiches, etc, whatever he needs. Apart from that, I completely agree with you.

This should be bottled up and given as prescription to anyone suffering from stress. It might be a very good book, but it's not quite the same without Stephen reading it aloud with his calm voice in a comfortable chair :P

Loved the beginning: "Are you sitting comfortably?" and before the next comment, I was back sitting at the French windows listening to "Listen with Mother"

Quite by chance, I fell upon this site. I am Greek and we were taught the Odyssey and the Iliad at school we even had to learn verses to recite by heart in ancient as well as modern Greek. I thoroughly enjoyed your storytelling. All the while I was listening I was thinking, had it been in rhyme it would have been the same manner Homer would have said it. Can't thank you enough for this wonderful narration. THANK YOU!

I started hiking a few years both for my physical and mental health and choose Stephens audiobook on Greek mythology on my first couple of hikes. I thoroughly recommend it, I got the beautiful views of the Welsh hills and mountains and Stephen teaching me history better than my old history teacher ever could

This was so brilliant to listen to! I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Fry perform part of his Mythos at the Shaw festival in Canada, and this brought me back to that wonderful performance. Thank you!

Absolutely delightfully conveyed. Last few sentences telling why story of Troy should be heard. And it’s only small part of Greek Mitology. Thank you Mr. Stephen Fry. 👋

I'm following Stephen for years. I was raised as a humanist and it is my religon. He should lead the human race to its real purpose. We are so poor in this materialistic world. Life is happening in another level. It is approachable for everyone. Fry can show us the way. ☯️🌶️

Thanks, Stephen! Homer could have done no better. Took me right back to age 7 - 8 when I first came across these tales. In kiddie books, but more memorably, in the Classics Illustrated version. Wonderful series that hooked me on the Iliad, Mark Twain, Dickens & sundry others. Today of course they'd be marketed as 'graphic novels' for kids.

Only Stephen Fry could so easily get away with getting a "DOH!" from Homer into that story.

He should be declared god of facilitation. If he were to tell the story in original language (or the exact translation) nobody would ever understand what he was talking about. It's a great simplified version for those who have interest in ancient literature but lacking literature. I'm simply astonished !

Having just listened to the full audiobook read by Stephen Fry himself I must say this has been and is supreme enjoyment !! absolutely good time spent in listening, and good time spent in the writing as well !! Stephen Fry has done a grand thing. One point of wonder, the fact that Paris raided Sparta and did steal breaking the rules of hospitality, and then on the way back to Troy his party seemed to raid along the shores, killing Sidon and stealing, all of this activity and what had to occur during the siege of Troy to supplement the army in the field there, a continued need to raid and pillage for foods and what not, all of this sounds very much like actions of the "Sea Peoples" at the collapse of the Bronze Age, or the actions taking place in the end decades of the said Bronze Age. I enjoyed the small addition or mention of A Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson, Doyle being a Gemini by birth I have always seen the two famous characters as each side of the Gemini twins nature, something Im very familiar with being Gemini myself :)

I developed a trust to Stephen Fry, and I disregarded my disrespect to actors profession sins. I was offered to be an actor in my youth I have my own opinion. It seems that Stephen Fry’s contribution to humanity is more of an educator, and the one who brings inspiration by exploring classical mythology, and pointing out how truth about human behavior has not changed and the world as we know, it is made out of feminine and masculine and the epic struggle for survival of the species Carved scarf scars on every heart I know #Bogoslowsky , a.k.a. immortal king Gilgamesh
