Unfortunately, he passed very quickly, only a year after he was diagnosed. He was a great man, he smiled and made people happy and when I found out that Stephen Hawking had suffered from this disease too. I was curious into how long he survived for so long and gives me hope that their is research to help stop this terrible illness. Because, at a certain point, its not like any other disease, you eventually lose the ability to converse and express thought so I had no idea how he felt, and the emotional pain he endured as he could not speak to his children,me and his wife. Diseases and conditions dont discriminate. Many incredible people have conditions that stop them doing what they are amazing at. There are athletes who have won Olympic medals after being diagnosed with genetic diseases and there are those who are diagnosed early and never have the chance to show what they are capable of. Unfortunately its life but hopefully one day genetic engineering will allow individuals with severe genetic diseases to live a more typical life.

This disease sucks. It runs in my family as well. My great grandma got it really bad. My mom went to be with her when she died. I wasn’t allowed. She starved to death, and called out in pain when she died. Remember guys, if someone has come to accept death, just let them go. It’s not selfish to let them go, it’s selfish to keep them in pain.

My dad got ALS and he died in 2 yrs from the diagnosis. It just sucks and isn’t fair but more so of the fear one must feel and the scene in the bathtub is very accurate. He was the quintessential slick back company man/ salesman and it broke him. I hate this disease.

I wonder how he felt living to old age with the disease. Was it like constantly living in suffering, or was he able to appreciate what he still had? It really makes you wonder how he felt, since he was limited in his range of expression. Only being able to communicate through one medium for the rest of your life hinders your social life.

The fact that Stephen Hawking literally believed he was watching himself on screen must have been very mind blowing in his perspective. I can't imagine how much of a blessing both gentlemen must've felt when they got to meet each other during production. Behind the scenes during the carnival date is when Stephen Hawking actually appeared to meet the actor.

This is surprisingly accurate. Upper motor neuron diseases lead to spasticity and fasciculations while the muscles atrophy, and they actually simulated spasticity and fasciculations. The LP process was pretty legit too, though the CSF was a tan/brown color, which is called xanthochromia would actually indicate a small brain bleed. Motor neuron diseases can be tested for by looking for specific proteins in the CSF, but it wouldn't change the color of the CSF.
