To be fair, I like them both. The way King worded things in the book made it easy to picture what was going on. Kubrick made the movie feel claustrophobic. King goes further with the man in the dog costume, kind of makes the interaction between Danny pretty horrifying. Kubrick did a better job with the ending in my opinion. They're both great.

@@DreamfactoryZero I agree. While I love Kubrick's movie, it's much more focused on aesthetics than actually telling a story (and Shelley Duvall is just awful as Wendy). The Shining TV miniseries that King himself wrote was much more faithful to the book, with a more coherent story and actual character development, though suffers from mid-90s TV-movie hokeyness in many parts.

Have to agree with you. I saw this one & as a Stephen King fan (maybe not #1 tho--hey, everybody can't be), I naturally was curious to check it out & was pleasantly surprised by Drew. She tends to come across as very warm & positive in her movie roles, but I did not know to expect that same kind of energy when she interviews. Not everyone knows that it takes work to focus on the positive & so to see someone else doing that so well is very encouraging.

The Shining (book) was basically a story about a man consumed by his addiction to alcohol. It was a VERY personal story for King, and his own addiction. Kubrick basically changed what the psychological aspect (horror) was about . I’d argue it’s a goddamn masterpiece (movie) but I understand King’s point of view.
@michaelsims1160
@michaelsims1160 2 года назад
Yeah. Well there’s a video of King childishly backmouthing Kubrick at an auditorium after he died calling him an anal control freak. Really nice! I’ve got no sympathy for King. If he didn’t like the movie which I completely agree is a masterpiece too bad. Don’t sell the movie rights then which Kubrick bought fairly with full rights to change as he saw fit. King basically wanted to direct Kubrick. He even wrote a screenplay which he gave to Kubrick which Kubrick threw out. King’s mini series basically showed that he has no understanding of how to make a movie. It was awful.

Personally, I remain on Stephen King's side of the issue over the Stanley Kubrick film version of "The Shining" from 1980 and I will always be in solidarity with many novelists who just DON'T WANT their works being mistreated by Hollywood filmmakers because they often worry about the results of how they turn out in the end anyway. When I saw Kubrick's cinematic take on "The Shining," I WAS impressed with it. But after Stephen King told about how he had HATED that film because it wasn't like his original novel, I had realized that Mr. King was RIGHT about it and that I vowed NEVER to watch it again for as long as I live regardless of the 1980 film's unfortunate popularity by courtesy of Stanley Kubrick. Other than that, I LOVED Kubrick's OTHER classic films instead.

I'm feeling a "Neil Gaiman/Tori Amos" vibe here, y'know? I love this. The barn story reminded me of one book I wish Mr. King talked about, and I don't know if Drew is reading this ones, so it goes out to everybody: If you haven't, read "Lisey's Story". Right now that is THE ONE adaptation from Stephen King that I want to see in a movie, and it's one of the most beautiful SK stories I've read, right up there with "Shawshank" and "The Body". I seem to recall it was already on the works, but I haven't heard about it lately.

Doesn't matter. I hate scary movies but I like Kubrick's version of the Shining. That helicopter fly by beginning with that music is amazing! Stephen King decided to make his version and it sucked.

Kings version is infinitely better. Unlike Kubricks, it is actually faithful to the source material, respects the characters, themes etc. The majority of people j e talked to who say they don't like kings version either never actually saw it or never read the book either

@@maxisenberg9093 The book works as a written form. Kubrick's Movie works in the form of Film. Both Great... stop hating.

I've always wanted Stephen King to write a follow-up book about Firestarter. I would like to see how Charlie McGee life as an adult turns out. And if the SHOP is still after her.

The way Drew and also Jimmy Fallon always claim everything is their favorite is so disingenuous. Can't you people even have a genuine opinion on anything instead of just kissing everyone's butt? It's sickening really. I always liked Drew as an actress, but I could never watch such a fake show. Fallon is even much worse.

He is right! The book is way better than the movie in my opinion. I did not see the movie, but saw some scenes, but this novel has dragged into the world of reading...thanks Mr King

This is rather old news. King has been talking publicly about not liking the adaption for decades. The movie is very much just the bare bones plot of book. Kubrick entirely does his own thing. So, I understand King’s frustration. Still, the movie is an influential classic and still popular for a reason. It is about time he moves on from that topic.

I just recently saw a theory on RU-vid of what possibly Kubrick's adaptation of Kings novel could have been and why it was so cold and different and bare bones.. Kubrick is known for making movies his own - It is the Wendy theory... That Wendy is mentally ill and made up A LOT of what was going on. They note how in most of Kubrick's movies he is Meticulous with details. And a lot of details if you re-watch the Kubrick shining does not have consistent continuity. Look up the Wendy Theory... Gives his version an entire different perspective... I still love the book WAY better than movie - even tv mini-series - but I thought it explained why Kubrick did what he did.

I just look at the movie and book as completely separate entities. It’s not really an adaptation. But it is a great movie.

Well he was asked a question. He's not just bringing it up randomly like he can't move on. I'm sure it doesn't keep him awake at night, but he doesn't like it, and if someone asks you about a movie or something you don't like, you still don't like it, even if you have moved on and don't dwell on it. "What do you think of [old movie you don't like]?" "I don't like it" Come on it came out 20 years ago, you need to move on.
