Stephen King Discussion on Writing and Q&A with wife Tabitha King and son Owen King 

Many commenters here have issues with the audience seeming bored, so I'll clarify a bit. Before Stephen spoke, both his wife and son read passages from their own lit for nearly an hour - and neither of them are good readers. Additionally, this is obviously a high school crowd. When I was in high school, I only had a couple friends who read Stephen King. It's absurd to expect that even 10% of a random crowd of teenagers care about Stephen King. However, my biggest gripe is that most of you are wearing blinders to the students who are obviously incredibly excited. Considering how few friends I had in high school that were interested in Stephen King, it was actually refreshing to see so many in this crowd holding on to his every word. It's also incredibly unfortunate that, compared to other Stephen King talks online, so many of you have absolutely nothing to add beside comments belittling high schoolers for not being more interested in an author you like. Some of my best friends only read 'high-literature' in high school and scoffed at 'genre writers' or 'pop authors' like Stephen King and insulted my tastes, though I understand plainly that tastes are of course subjective. Stephen King is obviously a master of horror lit, but I don't think it's necessary to comment on the audience - especially when you have nothing else of interest to add. Stephen King was giving his time to help these students who live in an area where they might not have access to him any other way. This is wonderful of him and his family to give their time to inspire others.

I’ve just started reading some of Stephen Kings books and quickly realized he is a genius. His frank and humorous prose leave me in awe.

I loved Tabitha! She's hilarious and intelligent! She's got a wry, dry sense of humor.

In some ways this was one of the best events Stephen King ever did. The audience wasn't the usual fan crowd, who cheer and clap whenever King mentions one of his books. This was a tough crowd who had to be won over and I think in the end they were. Let's not forget that Stephen taught in high school for two years after graduating from the University of Maine, so he knows his way around kids who are bored and/or disinterested in literature. Nevertheless some of the questions were better than the usual "what scares you?" or the "who is your favorite character?" questions he is asked all the time. He wasn't in his usual comfort zone and it made him/them work harder to win the crowd. And in my opinion they did with spades. I myself really enjoyed listening to them, because they said many interesting engaging answers and had some very good thoughts. Great video, well worth watching.

What a rare opportunity to hear what three writers have to say about writing. I find each of them authentic,creative,wise and above all human and honest. What Tabitha King says about fiction at 42 minutes in is so insightful and true. Very smart lady and I hope I see more interviews of her.

My late mom also read Agatha Christie's novels when she was young. She learned to read on her own and she barely could write some words. She was born in 1938 and we're from Spain. A quite difficult time and place to go to school, you know... I love you even more now, Mr. King. Thank you so much 💛

Under the Dome was such an EXTRAORDINARY novel. It had me from page one...I could NOT put that book down. Of course I was totally lost in it...holding my breath for most part of it lol :)

He's lucky to have Tabitha as his wife, isn't he? And they are still married which is beautiful to see as so many rich and famous go their separate ways... A nice, down-to-earth family. Good questions from the young people.

I read a lot when I was young. I read a lot of books by different authors when I get a lot older. Among these authors, I read Stephen King a lot. It's not been just a simple reading. I read him to learn a lot from the experience. I like his style. I like the particular way his imagination works. Keep on, Sir.

Kind of get the vibe that half the students there were not there on their own volition. Seems like it was a mandatory attendance thing for certain honors and advanced placement high school students in the Washington, DC area. Normally most King audiences are really glad for the event and energetic.

I loved this. Thank you for posting. I have been a fan of Stephen King for as long as I can remember. One of my dreams in life is to one day meet him. There is one thing I would like to talk to him about though and that's killing off Larry Underwood in The Stand. lol While reading The Stand I loved how Larry grew and changed and then *boom* and he was gone. I cried and couldn't finish reading the book until a few months later. I do get connected with characters and Larry Underwood was a character that could have flourished. As for the audience they did look unappreciative and bored. I saw some roll their eyes, look around instead of paying attention and yawning. I would have been in the front seat taking in every word. It's not because they are from another generation as the young man's favourite movie was "IT" and he appeared to be around the same age as the other students. It's so wrong for people to label the audience bored because of their skin colour. They are *people*!!! The only race is the human race.

I hate watching old videos like this because to me 2008 seems like yesterday and then I look at recent and old footage of people and realize how much everyone ages.

When I was very young I watched Carrie, It, The Shining etc. It was partly scary. Now I started to read King's books. I started from "It" before sleep, hehe:) I was freakin' crazy chillingnce than years ago watching video! Really, people try King's books (the best before bed, hehe)!

People in these comments are being ridiculous. As if King's never had to deal with an audience of low-energy teenagers before. The man was a teacher for years. Besides, just because they weren't all staring at him with stars in their eyes doesn't mean they weren't listening.

The discussion is a little bit above the kids' heads, but that's okay. They'll learn from it anyway. Part of it is shyness too. I like some of the questions that are a little bit nervy. They're not necessarily very sophisticated questions, but it's kind of nice those questions get asked sometimes. I fondly remember when I was in high school, when Carrie first came out and everybody was passing it around like a dirty secret!

The first time I saw Stephen King in person (at a distance) I cried. He had been such a huge part of my life for 25+ years at the time that seeing the reality of him was overwhelming. I cannot understand the apathy I'm seeing here. I understand that SK isn't for everyone, but I'm having a hard time understanding why he is scheduled to address an audience that seems less than interested in his feedback.

Anyone know what high school this was? I was in middle school in that area at the time this happened. I’m curious to know

I could feel Stevens response before the chuckle. Not a chuckle but that air escape thing passed off as an acknowledgement of something. Is the word fantasy in this context revealing of the style of desire present in the life of long term matrimony ? Desire becomes something external to the marriage. Fantasy. Becomes..........yah right. Forget I said anything.

He was almost well spoken. Once he mentioned that people who don't read might find a job in the Army he lost me. I think he misspoke and he didn't mean it because he doesn't really know. That was an ignorant, biased comment. 37:12. I served for 17 years. I even read one of his books (From a Buick 8, honestly a disappointing book from his normal standard) while I was in Iraq. I was an avid reader growing up. I, in fact, read a lot of King's work. I hope that watchers take the advice they need and don't see all of his words as the gospel. He's human like all of us. ...I just noticed that this was filmed April 2008. That is exactly when I was in Iraq (specifically Sep 07-Dec 08). That's funny to me.
