King ran the gauntlet like a boss to pay respects to all the gods of the literary world. 'Salem's Lot is essentially contemporary Dracula, Pet Sematery essentially contemporary Frankenstein. The Shining is "fear of ghosts" and of the human condition. IT is the advent of fear itself, and the power of imagination in its dominion over the human mind. The connection to Lovecraft in Needful Things and The Mist...etc. Poe, Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, their influences are all present and accounted for at various places throughout his legacy. He has an affinity for carrying on traditions and it shows (shines) in a brilliant way. That's what makes him unparalleled to me.

His book have scary elements but i never call them horror novels. They are essentially thrillers where normal humans are being put into abnormal situations. They are real stories, not just kids getting slaughtered at summer camp.

I think the distinction here is between 'horror' and 'slasher'. While 'slasher' is a sub-genre of horror, it is generally the first thing that comes into people's heads when they think of 'horror'. Personally I'm not a huge fan of slasher, they're where most of the clichés come from. Really, horror is just as malleable and full of potential as any other genre. Of course there is the argument that the tendency of consigning stories into genres results in oversimplification of the stories themselves.
@Njbear7453

I totally agree; even "IT" is not a horror story in that sense. It´s a book about everything: youth (and how it forms us), growing up in a small town, injustice and the actual horror of facing adulthood. It´s a book about America; most of King´s books are. His monsters and scary elements are often vehicles he uses to describe something inside the society - and something inside every human being.
@187mrsmith
@187mrsmith 5 лет назад
Yeah so therefore their horror books like what the fuc bro...he takes pride in that s*** so why you going to try to deny him the title of horror ... You do realize horror movies have regular people with regular situations right ... It's usually just amped up but even in thrillers there's a lot of unbelievable stuff going on there and technically thrillers and horror movies are intertwined with each other

Some of it is a little dramatic...not that many kids speak so eloquently in real life, but when I read It and The Body (Stand By Me), I was just so amazed at how well he got the inner workings of the childhood psyche going. And boy does he like to put his children characters through hell 😂

I wrote a children’s book once. I sent it to Dorrance Publishing Co. They said that they wanted to publish it but that I would have to pay them. I wrote back “Why?” They said that’s how they did it because I was no Steven King. I said “He is my favorite horror author but I don’t think I would want to buy a children’s book from him. I really would but seriously, comparing me to the Master just made me cry.

I like the scene where Bill saw one of his book that Stephen was reading and he ask him does he want to sign it and he said no because he didn't like the ending this is the scene where Bill saw his childhood bike named Silver.
