The last time I saw The Stand paperback in a bookstore, it was 1,400 pages. That 80's copy you have is 739 pages, so are you sure your uncut version isn't nearly twice as long, more than 400 pages. Great Review!😀
He's excessively indulgent with the free zone-where the Vegas fraction is given scraps. Throughout the entire read, I just wanted more Flagg; that may have been the reason for my disliking. For such a notorious Villan, I expected more presence from him. I'd say Harold was well done and far more memorable than Flagg.
3 versions of The Stand exist: the original 1978 hardcover; before that first came out in paperback (1980) King made additional changes; and the ONLY one to read, the complete uncut version.
My favorite book of all time. I have 12 different versions of this book, all the loose comics, the big hardback complete comic with the biohazard slip case, old Fangorias featuring The Stand. I admit to being obsessive over this book. You've probably been asked this 100 times, but have you read Swan Song by Robert Mccamon? 5/5
@@DaveReadsKing Dan Simmons- Summer Of Night is also a really good read that's also sort of like IT. No clown or anything, but it's reminds you of it. Boy's Life has jumped up to the top of my "read next" list!
I really enjoyed the uncut version of the stand and I just finished watching the 2020 adaptation of it I absolutely enjoyed it king ending for the final episode was so amazing definitely one of my favorite adaptations of kings work 🌟
Who is deciding to make all the characters black they legit messed Larry underwood up. Also the gunslinger... Like whyyyy. Frodo gonna be black next. Let's make a Stephen king adaptation of Roots. Staring Christopher Walken as Kunta Kente
Finished it today, I like it quite a lot, And I loved most of the characters that you seemed not to ( I see mother abi and Tom as not any less than perfect characters) It really is a story about humans with all of their flaws and good things set together, i think the most interesting character of this novel is Herold
I feel like Stephen King does archetypes. One of those is the magical negro, as seen in this book, but another one of those archetypes is his take on religious people Mother Abigail also suits that archetype as well as the magical... U know Other characters in his canon that suit the religious person are... Drum roll please.. Father Callahan That priest from Cycle of the werewolf Margaret White from Carrie Mrs Carmedie from the Mist All the kids from Children of the Corn The bad guy in Revival I'm not saying his take on religious people is a bad thing, its just something I noticed
King even said in an interview he got to a point where he didn’t know what to do with all the characters he created.. so he was told what do you do with characters you don’t know what to do with… you kill them off lol
First couple of episodes were great. But then, when it got to Vegas and it was just people having sex everywhere and Randall Flagg acting like a cartoon character, it kind of lost me. And that new ending, where they aboslutely doubled down on the magical negro trope? Not for me!
Very fair - this was one of my earlier videos and I was very naive with how I structured them. They were more thought out from about Dolores Claiborne onwards 😊
@@DaveReadsKingActually, after rewatching the video, you definitely warned of spoilers at the beginning and I missed that the first time. I’m sorry for my original comment! 😭
@bacon92780 don’t worry, this one was under my old format where I threw spoilers in all the shop - I was a fool. But thanks for noticing the warning, plenty of other folk who’ve complained in the comments seem to miss it 😂
Your reviews are engrossing for me, a perennial Stephen King reader and fan. Thank You for the trips down memory lane. There is, however, no need for the excuses for the lack of today’s bullshit political correctness in King’s art.
Thanks, although I don’t really get what you mean with your last sentence? Unless you’re talking about the cringeworthy magical negro trope character that is Mother Abigail
@@DaveReadsKing The point is that her appearance is ultimately not an issue. And anyway, with artistic license you can devise any character you like. Hollywood is failing these days because of woke nonsense. Regards
I loved the Cap'n tripps end of the world sequence that was my favorite part. But when it started to get about God vs the devil. Good vs. Evil. I rolled my eyes and got a lil bored. I know religion and God is a big part of king's works which comes from him being religious but it felt uninspired to me. What I found much more interesting was prologue section where he started mentioning how Boulder was becoming a normal city again with normal problems just like before. Cops carrying guns etc. But obviously it's king and I still have a great time reading it.
King's most overrated work. When someone reads a book of over 1200 pages the rational expectation would be he will get all his questions answered or at least the ones that matters. But this book didn't answer them and the ending was comical. The whole book was filled with lots of unnecessary details while he spent hardly any time on the climax. I expected a fight between good and evil in a post apocalyptic world and got some theoretical bullshit. Only Stephen King book which disappointed me.
