Hey! I'm Dave Musson and I *love* reading Stephen King books - join me as I take you through each of his books - and movies -and give you 19 reasons to give them a go!
Revival by Stephen King himself. Sounds like a good book. It should be turned into a movie. I have read about it on web. Plan to read Revival down the road. Stephen King is the master. It has a Lovecraft feel to it. Starting to read Lovecraft stories. King is the best.
Honestly the losers club is way more resourceful than they would be today. One of the things about a sequel to It is that today’s kids probably wouldn’t take pennywise seriously and would end up getting killed. They would probably also hope that the problem would go away. I’m not saying all of today’s kids are like this but if there’s ever a modern day pennywise he would have to change tactics to scare kids.
After currently dnf'ing Sleeping Beauties for now, I'm starting Firestarter for the first time. Wish me luck.😁 Great idea for a video. Definitely a It, Institute, Stand or a Dr sleep sequel would be my top choices.👍
Tales from The Stand - an anthology that basically asks the question "if the world dies to captain trips, how does that effect his other novels?? " What happens to Salem's lot or Derry when "food" suddenly becomes scarce? Can a "place" like the overlook or rose red become sick? Do the creatures in "the mist" roam free now that there is nothing to contain them? To make the decision: die as a man or live as a werewolf?
There is an anthology of stories, by others who aren’t King, set in the world of The Stand that is coming out this year. Your other suggestions are all great 👍
I'm reading and watching 1994 TV series of the stand side by side. I wonder why King change Flagg from a man to a demon, and why he changed Rita to Nadine (Larry's woman) in the series. I think the book is better than the series. What do you think?
I also prefer the book (although not a very big fan of either really). As for merging/swapping characters, I think that often happens for TV just to streamline things a little 🤷🏻♂️
my pick is not a sequel, but a sort of prequel i want a whole book of Dr John McAulife and adventures as a ME oh yeahhhhh my dotter said Pet Semetary before we hit play how about a novella/short story from word processor of the gods where his beautiful new life starts fraying at the edges and glitches start showing his old awful life under the proverbial blanket
Couldn't finish the novel, found it too silly. The film was just a way for me to get to the end of that story much quicker. Still: too silly. 😅 A shame because the beginning in that cabin is amazing and really scary.
Great topic, Dave! I always tell people I really miss those big long King novels that cover a whole small town. I would love to see him write big long small-town novels for Gatlin Nebraska and Ludlow Maine. Sort of big sequels to Children of the Corn and Pet Sematary that dive into those towns the same way Needful Things covers all of Castle Rock or The Tommyknockers covers all of Haven. A Sidewinder Colorado book would be really cool too, as sort of a combined Shining and Misery sequel.
Have you listened to any of the audio books? Been listening to Eye of the Dragon and the narration is great, makes Flagg feel real intimidating and creepy. P.s. I thought the Carrie re-read was great and would love to see that continue as a series
My three: 1) The Stand, Just say 20 years down the line, how bad are things in Boulder, if they haven't learned any of the lessons, what if there was an east coast group lead by an old Stu that has to go back to Boulder and set things right or dealing with the fall out 2) 1408 (this kinda has past in so ways) but I would have loved to seen when you had all those "haunted" shows on tv, and do it like lost footage about a group of these "hunters" going there and how bad the room is and what is the ramifications of the forces in the room being seen and how that could effect the world. 3) Carrie/Firestarter: Why two, because I could see that Carrie was the reason for the shop coming into being, and go through things maybe as a "Stand" way of going from people working in Shop's perspective and then maybe like Charlie or someone else trying to stop the shop.
I would absolutely love a sequel to The Stand. What happened to the world after Vegas? Could Randy Flagg maybe return? What happened to the people of Boulder? I also would love a sequel to Under The Dome. That would be amazing.
After reading rattlesnakes I totally agree. Unpopular opinion but a similar story but with sue snell from Carrie. Also it’s way past the time period for penny wise to return
STEPHEN KING DOES STRANGER THINGS I NEED TO READ THIS ONE DAVE I FIRST STARTED READING STEPHEN KING LAST YEAR THE FIRST STEPHEN KING NOVEL I READ WAS THE VAMPIRE STORY SALEMS LOT IT SCARED ME
Oh yeah! I’d love a good Firestarter sequel. I’ve read King on and off since the 80s and hadn’t gotten to Firestarter until recently and I think it’s become one of my favourites.
I feel like in my opinion Firestarter, Pet Sematary and IT could get potential sequels. It depends if it's a short story. Rattlesnakes was an awesome sequel to Cujo. I would honestly like to see Misery get a sequel. I do hope foe a third book in The Talisman series. From what I heard, Stephen King may continue to write the third book solely. Also, rest in peace, Peter Straub 🙏.
I really love Dave's videos and often do comment, I hope it is okay, if I link my own vid about Carrie here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7tyvxX56zAw.html I started a series in German, now I try to republish them in English - long days and pleasant nights! ;)
My first reaction when I read the titel: I don't need one at all. I don't see very many stories, that really are needing one. Yes, I admit, Firestarter is an idea. But I don't need old Richie Tozier in a retirement home .. perhaps, if he starts to remember? uhm ... okay, I have to stop the idea or I write fan fiction^^ I would love to know about the children of Fran and Stu, the world of The Stand could be nice for a sequel. But I must admit, some prequels should be interesting: About Derry? Bought. Perhaps some old tales about the man they call RF. 1630 in Germany? and I can't comment without Joyland ... I want to know some stories from the youth of Mr. Easterbrook, carnie from carnie.
my top 10 sk books that need to be adapted 10. the institute 9. the regulators 8. desperation 7. Holly 6. Lisey's story 5.Billy Summers 4. Duma key (my favourite book) 3. Rose madder 2. the library policeman 1. the long walk
Some good shouts there - the Long Walk is being filmed this summer! There are also already adaptations of Desperation (2006, directed by Mick Garris, not great) and Lisey’s Story (2021, Apple TV, absolutely majestic).
Both the movie and the book could have been great, there’s definitely something good there that wasn’t realised - needed a stronger editor I think! And yes, Jason Lee is hot and has an excellent choice of glasses style in the movie 😉
Liked the movie but it was a mess at times. Still entertaining, and with great acting. The book is of course much better. To call the movie a flop..nah. You have a tendency to dislike a lot of good material out there...Rose Red and In the Tall Grass, for example. While not being Oscar material. they are far from bad. But you do get my respect for your appreciation of The Shining miniseries which is far superior to Kubrick's movie. On that one I totally agree with you.
I think my reference to this one being a flop was in terms of its commercial performance, which is hard to argue otherwise. I think it has plenty of charm but loses its way towards the end. Rose Red…a cool idea but way too long - I would have much preferred a 90 minute movie. As for In the Tall Grass…I’ve still not seen that so can’t comment with any authority other than to say I’ve only heard bad things about it.
I’ve still not seen Midnight Mass. But, surely it’s more accurate to say MNM is like Storm of the Century? Given that the latter came out 20+ years earlier?
I’m doing my annual read through of Stephen king and I’ve just gotten to his 1985 short story collection skeleton crew. From a Buick 8 is underrated with some Eldritch influence. I recently decided to tackle the haunted car story and am writing a story about a black truck that targets men who don’t fit the box of masculine and the non binary main character who’s out there trying to stop it
I Have just finished the French audiobook version of The Gunslinger. After reading more than 20 King novels I was really curious about that first Dark Tower book and the idea of King multiverse where all is connected. Unfortunately The Gunslinger was one of my worst King experience. Never been much a fan of the fantasy genre and for instance LOTR bores me extremely so maybe that’s the problem. I thought the first part was quite engaging and entertaining in this small town before the desert but everything after the town massacre felt nonsensical random gibberish. There was good bits here and there but without the restriction of our reality to ground the story (and King is so great about putting an anomaly to our reality and play around that) the narration is free to go all over the place and it felt to me pointless. More like an imaginative schoolboy wanking on paper. I just can’t be bothered going further on the Dark Tower where there is some other great King waiting on my reading list and away from this saga. Too bad.
I felt very similar but I forced myself to read The Drawing of the Three right after and it all clicked for me then. Don’t know if that helps and totally understand if you still don’t want to bother, but it could be worth a try!
I think it has really good parts, The way things ended at the prison-war was a bit weird if I'm allowed to say, but I did like a lot the ending of the book itself and all the ways that each character gets its ending. Not the best not the worst Still enjoyable
I’ve only seen this once before and remember thinking at the time that it was dumb and fun, but I didn’t like the Duditz stuff so I think with the push from your video I’m going to give it another go!
My top 10 most underrated 10. Dolores Claiborne 9.Bag of bones 8.from a buick 8 7. Gerald's Game 6.Fairy Take 5.Goes to the movies 4.Roadwork 3. The Institute 2.Later The most underrated Stephen king book 1. Duma Key
Nice! I did sort of do this in an old special and I’m pretty sure I had the same suggestion as you! Great minds! You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yml3spDXYeQ.htmlsi=j2cr8WOrPzqvNXLR
I've read the Dark Tower (a while ago now so I forget) what's the starbucks Easter egg all about? Just that there IS a Starbucks where there shouldn't be?
Yeah, basically - I never really got it either tbh, but I think it references a Starbucks somewhere years before it actually existed so, obviously 😬, that means it’s on another level of the Tower or some nonsense!
I really do love that you ACTUALLY give a spoiler alert, I've had alot of books sorta spoiled for me on reviews 😄 🤣 so thanks mate. I haven't got around to the outsider yet!
@@DaveReadsKing 😄 🤣 😂 I wouldn't even know where to begin to do a book review without spoiling, it's honestly just gotta be something you perfect with time lol.
Rare to find a King aficionado who puts The Stand so low on the list. *I totally agree!!* Robert McCammon's Swan Song and The Road by Cormac McCarthy were so much better. I'd put IT lower than The Stand though. IT needed around 500 pages taken out of it. Way too longwinded even by King's standard. My top-two are Salem's Lot. I read that decades ago when it was published and still have my original copy. The second of my top-two is Needful Things. Those two books are the ones that stuck with me over the years.
When this movie came out I took my then girlfriend to it. After the part where Thomas Jane answers the phone gun, she seductively pulled me close, grabbed my head, and whispered in my ear “this is the stupidest fucking movie I’ve ever seen” and then just let me go and went back to eating her popcorn. It was great when you gave that scene a shout out. I had forgotten that even happened. I had a really long, good laugh, not as long or as hard as a SK character, but pretty close.
Your girlfriend was probably more used to silly slasher movies, the kind where you leave the brain at home. Dreamcatcher has a lot of stuff going on in it and it does have its humor...on purpose. Too bad your girlfriend didn't "get it." Maybe she should have read the great novel before watching the movie. Also, all the people I've watched the movie with...not to mention the people in the theater...got a kick out of the scene your girlfriend didn't seem to like...or get.
@@peterhansen5096 Fun fact. When this movie came out in theaters before the movie they showed a matrix short film called the final flight of the osiris. This was a few months before matrix reloaded came out and matrix talk was at an all time high. Why they showed it before dreamcatcher i have no idea. Alas, this was the one and only reason she came to the movie with me. She didnt like reading, or stephen king. She was more into piercings tattoos and weed. Shes an ex for a reason LOL
Greetings from the UK-England......I saw this on its release in the cinema back in 2003,considering the Good/Bad ratio of Stephen King novels turned into films,i should have known better, frankly it sucked even more than the book did.
the a) casting for Duddits and b) the character as a whole is very problematic, but I will see an Oscar to should go to those eyebrows, they were a choice and I am here for that choice!
Thought Finn & Willy the Weirdo were the weakest two in this collection. Loved Rattlesnakes, could’ve been a Novel on its own. Just got Danny’s Bad Dream to go back to, left it til last as tis the longest one 😎👍🏻
