Stephen Kotkin cautions against the allure of pragmatic solutions that may compromise fundamental American values. He examines the complexities of safeguarding intellectual property while preserving an open society, the necessity of reframing the immigration narrative to capitalize on the benefits of global talent, and the role of indigenous peoples in the 21st century.
Kotkin ultimately emphasizes the vital role of strong leadership and the responsibility of the next generation to navigate the geopolitical tightrope, learning from the past and shaping a better future while steadfastly upholding the principles that define our open society, even in the face of existential threats.

Prof. Kotkin is terrific! I wish HOOVER INSTITUTE could arrange a debate between Prof. Kotnin and either Prof. Sachs or Prof. Mearsheimer regarding Ukraine war. That will be a blockbuster debate.

Great lecture. As a Canadian I can say our leaders went way overboard with immigration. Zero infrastructures was aggregated prior to us allowing millions of immigrants to arrive (we’re only 40 million). Now no one can afford a house/the cost of living is outrageous, our health care system is crumbling, homelessness and drug use is at an all time high, and in general the average person just doesn’t seem proud, happy or optimistic about being Canadian. I was hoping Kotkin would elaborate more on how you can mess up the positive aspects of immigration because our Trudeau Liberal government completely shat the bed over the last 8 years in this regard.

Kotkin is brilliant. What surprised me was the questions (most of them) the students asked, that show how much they have been brainwashed by identity politics. They seem incapable of looking beyond the bubble they live in..Even after a brilliant masterclass on geopolitics.

Q: Do you consider politicians like DeSantis who act in a way I find to be unprincipled to be an existential threat to our society? A: No, sweetheart. Our society is much more durable than that. Consider the possibility that you may be part of the problem.

Professor Kotkin ought to examine his lecture using the exact same four fallacies he cautions us against to see how he is guilty of all of them in this lecture. His intellectual sloppiness in presenting his thesis is astounding. If this is the standard for the propaganda machine that he is proposing to establish, we cannot expect it to adhere to historical /geological truthfulness. Professor Kotkin: do not become them.

I dont understand why the prof thinks physically moving people to America for their knowledge is such a great thing. But even if it is, there's having some hundreds or thousands of experts move here, and then there's moving millions of people here. Housing in my hometown isnt through the roof expensive because of all the engineers and nuclear physicists moving here: its expensive because of all the people they need working the drive thru to serve food to....other immigrants, mostly. People cant afford housing because fast food restaurants and Starbucks coffee need workers to service other immigrants. And they are building new apartments, they are building apartments to house immigrants: but housing costs are *still* going up. Great for my parents and people like them who own houses already, but not great for younger people who dont. They just build housing to put immigrants in, then more immigrants (legal and illegal) come and they need more housing. To sum up, we have worse traffic, worse infrastructure, a bunch of foreign people everywhere, and no affordable housing. What a bargain.

Famed History Professor Kotkin rants about intellectual property rights and the structure of the internet. Spoiler alert - he doesn't like the free internet and wants to put up barriers. A waste of time to listen to. Please talk to us about Russia and Ukraine. How do you see what is happening inside Russia?
