This was the huge project I was working on. It took about a week of non-stop working on this! I hope I've done the original file the justice it deserves with this!
Mod changes:
Converted rates and strengths of various mods like Tiny, Digital(Z)Period, and SquarePeriod into their SM5 forms.
Scaled some cases of Invert.
Did some Sudden and SuddenOffset
Split some uses of Tiny into its' column-specific versions due to how Tiny works.
'Grain' doesn't do anything due to it not being implemented. Whoops.
Internal changes:
Had to make BG manipulations be MessageCommands, due to the original methods not working.
Added zoomtos to all BGs.
Abused ratios for:
- Scaling position
- Scaling zooms
Made an AFT for the sake of having a 'screen' in AFT form. (this is how I recreate nITG's AFTs)
Replaced ApplyGameCommand with FromString and Playeroptions functions.
Had to perform logarithm math to get perframe Tiny acting correctly.
Did some sleep and positioning on judgment+combo.
Used SCREEN variables in place of some hard-coded numbers.
Replaced Blind with MessageCommands.
Replaced the quad full of judgment-based commands with one JudgmentMessageCommand.
Lamented the lack of shader switches in SM5.
Found a case where using SCREEN_WIDTH is actually a bad idea.
Had to do some *-1 on AFT rotations due to how nITG AFTs differ from SM5's.
Remembered that MoveX/Y mods start at 1.
Hid more UI elements.
SetVanishPoint becomes vanishpoint (and it's used on a wrapper state instead.)
Moved gat_allproxies to be inside of the screen AFT.
Made some quads for the 'scrolling' sections during the 4th song.
Unconverted some controller quad positions.
Converted some other positions.
Enclosed a queuemessage argument.
Used a sprite for the troll section instead of loading the whole BG again.
Moved flash quad to be over everything except for SHAME.
Have problems getting this to work, or want me to convert something to SM5? Let me know!

Also, so you guys know: At this point, SM5 uploads aren't gonna be as frequent as they've been. (kind of running out of 'easy' things to port) Obviously, non-SM5 stuff will still happen. (even if that's not what interests you) Hope you'll be okay with that.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. (maybe I didn't put the words together in the best way...) let me try to use words in a better way: if nITG and oITG didn't exist (and by extension, the awesome community that surrounds it), I wouldn't be the way I am now. If they didn't exist, I as a simfile converter wouldn't exist. (And personally, I like both (n/o)ITG and SM5 equally)

Trust me, matoi is something I REALLY want to do. Once I get all the mods I need (this time, it's gonna be more difficult to do so, because spline mods (how DO they work?) and spiral mods don't play nice with holds (there's a reason I haven't added them into SM5 yet), and also color mods are needed) But, if I can port this, then maybe I can go farther one day.

I see there's creative liberties been taken during certain sections, but overall this is a really clean port.

Yeah, sometimes creative liberties are kinda inevitable (like adding the side fades during 6:53 onwards) But, I try not to change too many things. Just parts needed for it to look nice regardless of resolution.

Yeah I guessed there'd be stuff you couldn't avoid, but the port itself is almost entirely the same as the OG file, which is impressive in and of itself due to how much work was done to make the file work in the first place back when it first came out.

Whenever I try playing the file with the default theme, the playfield always gets smaller than usual at the beginning so movement mods don't display correctly. This was the same case with every other file i've played in 5.1. How do I fix this?

That might be a case of notefield zoom being different from what you're used to? (Is this 5.1 you mention the nightly builds?) If so, there's notefield zoom options (labeled 'Zoom') in the song options menu that happens when you press start twice on the song wheel. If instead it's 5.1-new, I got nothing.

Lambda had weird options, so I had to manually dig into the theme code to increase the default zoom.

Hm...Here's an interesting idea: Try setting the 'FORCE_NVIDIA' variable to true in the song's default.lua file. (Also, what graphics card are you using?) That segment does some AFT tricks that I know don't look right in systems with nvidia cards (It's like that in nITG) The segment itself doesn't seem to use any nitg mods.

This sounds like SM5 has the same issue as nITG where LastSeenVideoDriver will always return Intel, despite using nvidia on the rare case the device has both Intel and nvidia available

Hey I'm running 5.1 and after the first section at 0:41 my arrows start spinning rather than rain down. Errors also do pop up. Is there any way I can fix this? Here's an example i.imgur.com/yIAC2iE.png

"Attempt to call method 'ConfusionOffset' (a nil value)" That means your build likely doesn't have ConfusionOffset. Your best bet is to grab a newer build. Either go build 5.1-new (I'd not recommend that unless you like compiling things) Or get a nightly build from smnightly.katzepower.com/ (This is the master branch, aka 5.2, but it still notes itself as 5.1) (I've also mentioned these options in the file's readme)

So, the fonts you put in your theme's Fonts folder. You can probably find the Themes folder in the game's install folder or your AppData stepmania folder.

Question. I just tried to download this for StepMania (im late, i know) and when i run it in the game, it says "D3D Video Renderer failed. Expect textures to fail" or something like that. Any ideas what i should do?

That means you're not using OpenGL as your renderer (It's needed for the cool blur effects) So, you have to go into your Preferences.ini file and change it so the VideoRenderers line has only opengl as the set value. (you should back up your preferences just in case) Where to find the preferences: github.com/stepmania/stepmania/wiki/Manually-Changing-Preferences (The folder may be "StepMania 5.1" instead of "StepMania 5") You can verify what renderer you're using by holding F3, and enabling "rendering stats". If you see "OpenGL", you should be good to go.

So, you won't find it anywhere in your game files. This is a location in windows that is hidden by default.Try putting %appdata% in your file manager's location bar, and see if it takes you anywhere. If all else fails, you could try looking up where %appdata% is on a search engine.

Not now. It sets texture on models, and I can't do that in SM5. I have been suggested to use ActorMultiVertex in place of setting model textures, but I have no clue on how it even works.

I'm kinda stuck with a laptop and it's not the best environment for doing any kind of work, stepmania or otherwise. Also spent some time fixing up a few older conversions, which is how I came to the conclusion above. Also, I don't have a stable net connection, so yeah... When I get back home next week, I can hopefully start doing conversion work and SM5 dev work as usual again.

It got ported a while ago (to both 5.0/5.1 and 5.2, but I wanted to use this one specifically for this file first. Make sure you aren't using D3D as the renderer. The file uses a thing that's known as an "AFT", which doesn't work in D3D. If you're in SM5.1, go into your Preferences.ini (There'll either be a Save folder in your SM5 AppData folder or your install folder. This is where that file is) and change "VideoRenderers" to have "opengl" (without the quotes) on the right of the "=". If you're using the SM5.3 builds that are out, then this shouldn't be an issue because D3D is not an option anymore. (and also there's a better renderer that still works with these files) If you don't know what renderer you're using, do F3+6 to find out.

Find Preferences.ini and change the VideoRender value to just opengl instead of whatever it is. (How to find it: github.com/stepmania/stepmania/wiki/User-Data-Locations ) (If you don't have a folder that only says "StepMania 5", then look for a similar folder (ex: 5.1 instead of 5)) Make sure the game is closed before doing that. (and maybe backup your preferences just in case?)

Look through the game logs for any errors. (or, if errors show up in the console, list those) In the game's app data folder, go into Logs, and you should see logs to look through. If there's no errors, then I don't know how to help... Another option could be to try another theme (or, depending on what version you're using, try a newer version of SM5)

Your version of SM5 isn't even close to new enough for this. This is even mentioned in the archive's readme... If you want a newer version of SM5 that's still compatible with 5.0 stuff, go build the 5.1-new branch. github.com/stepmania/stepmania/tree/5_1-new If you want the version I use in these videos, either build the master branch or grab a nightly version. (This is known as 5.2, and is not compatible with some things like 5.0 noteskins, some aspects of themes and certain simfiles) github.com/stepmania/stepmania smnightly.katzepower.com/ If you choose to go with 5.2, you should keep 5.0.12 in case some stuff doesn't work in 5.2 Also, the default theme (in both cases) is an HD theme, so a lot of my older conversions won't work as nicely for now. (But I'm working on fixing them up!)

That's where it gets complicated. You are going to have to build it yourself, as there aren't any pre-compiled versions. They have some general build instructions: github.com/stepmania/stepmania/wiki/Compiling-StepMania It also mentions general things you'll need, like git and cmake, which are cross-platform. If you're on Windows, you'd probably be best off with Visual Studio 2015. ( imagine.microsoft.com/en-us/Catalog/Product/101 ) I've gotten it to build with that. I've seen people have problems with newer versions of visual studio, so be careful...

Ok, so i installed a nightly build and it works properly now. But I'm encountering another problem and I don't know if this is a bug or not, but at some point during the song the arrows might slow down to like 0.1x speed, making them almost impossible to read. It seems to happen in a different place every time.

That doesn't sound right...What theme are you using, and are there any lua errors mentioned in the game logs? (and possibly, could you demonstrate this to me in a video if there aren't any errors?)

I'm not sure on what you want help with installing, so I'll write down general steps for both the simfile and a newer build of SM5. (here comes a wall of text!) For the file itself, it should generally be straight-forward to do: 1. Copy the "5. gat" folder into a song group folder. If you want, you can make a UKSRT8 folder in your SM5's Songs folder, then copy the song into uksrt8. The order should be: SM5 install -> Songs -> UKSRT8 -> 5. gat It doesn't have to be in a folder named UKSRT8 (any folder inside Songs should work) 2. Go into the archive's "Fonts" folder and copy this into the fallback theme's Fonts folder. It's entirely optional, but you'll get warnings if you don't have the font. The order should be: SM5 install -> Themes -> _fallback -> Fonts -> *put fonts here* The game itself is a bit more complex to get, depending on what you want: Grab either the master branch (nightlies work too) or the 5_1-new branch. These are the two 'main' versions of SM5 being developed, and have the necessary things for this file to play correctly. Nightlies (these are from the master branch): smnightly.katzepower.com/ Master branch: github.com/stepmania/stepmania/ 5.1-new branch: github.com/stepmania/stepmania/tree/5_1-new/ The master branch is known as 5.2, and is what these videos use. However, there's new systems in place, so some stuff from 5.0.12 won't work here, such as noteskins, some parts of themes or certain gimmick simfiles. 5.1-new is more compatible with stuff made for 5.0.12. what's the difference between the nightly builds and the normal builds

In this case, the nightly builds are precompiled versions of the master branch (aka 5.2), meaning you can get new features/bugfixes at the possible expense of stability/backwards compatibility. There are no precompiled versions of 5.1-new, so you'd likely have to build it yourself, if you're willing to do so. I consider 'normal builds' to either be official builds that were released (I think the last one was 5.0.12) or a build you compiled yourself from the official source. There shouldn't be much of a difference between nightly and official, as the nightly builds are made from the official source on GitHub. (and if you aren't on windows, you'll likely have to compile anyways if you want a more recent build/version)
