Glycolysis, part of cellular respiration, is a sequence of reactions that constitute the first phase of most carbohydrate catabolism (catabolism meaning the breaking down of larger molecules into smaller ones). Glycolysis occurs in most organisms in the cytosol of the cell. In glycolysis glucose, which is a form of sugar is eventually converted to pyruvate. The pyruvate end product of glycolysis can be used in either anaerobic respiration if no oxygen is available or in aerobic respiration via the TCA cycle which yields much more usable energy for the cell.

A pleasantly clear, well-narrated voice with a colorful video depicting proper enzymatic and substrate reactions should generate no dislikes. HOW can anyone give this a thumbs-down? I WISH I had videos like this back when I learned this material in the late 80’s😎

Well DONE! And thank you so much. Informative, simplified, and so well balanced to make sense of it after being taught all the details elsewhere. Even the unmentioned details in the background are a huge help- like the actual transition of atoms and bonds. Haven't found that on any other video or in class, but it's still just a bonus fact that won't hurt if you miss it. God bless!

In reality, the pyruvate and NADH are more powerful for the next cycle and the energy chain complexes in the mitochrondia, where a much more advanced and prolific generation of ATP happens. I like how the energy consumption/production phases are clarified, and how it's described that food reactants can enter at different steps too. Understanding that life has cobbled this together. over eons helps.

One big mistake: in the absence of oxygen, the conversion of pyruvate to lactic acid or ethanol is termed FERMENTATION, and NOT anaerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration is a term used to describe a microbial process that uses an electron transport chain to produce ATP from reduced coenzymes, but ends with a terminal electron acceptor OTHER than oxygen. Please do not use the terms fermentation and anaerobic respiration interchangeably because they are not the same thing.

Are the enzymes actually that much bigger than the glucose??
@notgivingyoumyname4777
@notgivingyoumyname4777 7 лет назад
Yes, they are. The way enzymes catalyze biological reactions is based on arranging the molecules right, e.g. hexokinase works by attracting a glucose molecule so that it is attached in a specific place on hexokinase's surface (active site) and at the same time attracting an ATP molecule so that it is attached right next to the glucose molecule. Hexokinase has a whole lot of functional groups that interact with both glucose and ATP so that they are arranged just right for the specific reaction leading to glucose 6-phosphate occurs, and not one of the dozen or so other reactions that would be possible with these substrates. All enzymes need to be comparatively big molecules so that hundreds of aminoacids worth of polypeptide chain can fold in the right way to make a scaffold for the twenty or so side chains that directly interact with the substrates.
