For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I was a big fan of Petrucci in my teens, but the Ernie Ball Musicman JP models were out of reach financially. The more affordable "Sterling" brand would probably still be out of reach at the kind of prices they are today, but I wanted to check out this Sterling JP150 that I found used locally. Actually, I think I'd recommend this over an Ibanez RG of a similar price - it's a similar neck feel, but without the Floyd Rose, and I think has more understated looks that could mean you get less funny looks?
Has anyone tried a Sterling - please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences whether bad or good in the comments!

For a while, I thought I'd like an Ibanez RG but with a 2 point trem.....Turns out Sterling are basically already making one in the shape of the JP150....Only think I'd like in addition would be the in between positions on a 5 way? Anyone got a Sterling - dig it or....bury it?

Just recently ordered a Sterling 'Mystic Green' JP6O on Sunday and it gets delivered today! I'm pretty stoked to get it. Been playing for roughly 25 yrs usually always ran Jackson or Ibanez styles like that but over the years my tastes have matured. Dug playing the Black (JP60) at a Guitar Center months ago. This definitely smokes the Ibanez models I've played recently. It's probably just me, seems like most of the big brand models all feel the same. Just my thoughts though.

I’ve had two JP Sterlings and loved them both. My current JP150 (green quilted maple) is an astonishing guitar and will likely stay in my collection until the day comes a EBMM version lands on my doorstep. Likely never. I’m surprised to hear that people on the internet have had been vocal about build quality issues. This has not been my experience whatsoever. Can’t fault it.

I have 4 sterlings now, all set up with new pickups & the cheaper ones have new hardware too - the best additions to my daily session life. They’re just reliable, cheap (vs a musicman) & feel great. Let’s me reserve the expensive EBMM’s for the studio or bigger shows. Great review 👍🏻

I have had a few of the MM JP models over the years, haven't played a Sterling. I did stop into a local shop yesterday and they had a Sterling Jason Richardson Cutlass on the wall so (after watching this video) checked it out (unplugged). I thought it was a very good bang-for-the-buck - fret work was good, no sharp edges, set up was more than adequate and the neck was comfy.

I have a JP60 in Mystic Dream. It's one of the newer models with the black hardware instead of chrome. Love it, although it did have some build imperfections that I noticed over time. It's my main 6 string at this point. I still have my RGT6EXFX that I've used for years and comparing the two the RGT has a better neck but I enjoy playing the JP60 more. Thinking of buying a JP157D sometime in the future. Anyway, great video and really nice playing!

I have a JP50 circa 2010, bought new for around gbp 250. It came with a sterling gigbag. Right out of the gate some of the issues I had with it were: - 'meh' pickups. Ended up switching to dimarzio air Norton and tone zone. - 3 way selector felt flimsy - tone and vol pots didn't have a smooth taper - the bridge wasn't great. Lots of 'clunk'ing on the arm. I ended up changing a lot of the bridge components to a point where I was happy with it. - nut wasn't cut properly. Changed to a graphtech tusq nut. I was however very happy with the neck dimensions, which are very close to the ebmm jp6 dimensions barring less of a thin D shape. Watching your video, it looks like quality has improved significantly; but as you mentioned, at that price, one could get a charvel pro mod dk24

New JP150D's are almost $1700 new here in Canada, which is a couple hundred cheaper than something like a RG652 Prestige hard tail or an AZ Premium. I had a JP70 7 string for a day, but it had something really wrong with the trem, so I ended up buying a used RG1527 for less. Lesson of the day, let someone else take the depreciation hit and buy used!? Paid under $700CAD each for S540, rg1570, rg2550e, rg2570, RG1527 & RGA121! I'm looking to get another prestige hardtail to play during lunch at work, but those crazy good deals I found around 2010 just aren't happening now :( I know people really like the Sterlings, just not sure how consistent they are? That top & roasted maple neck/fretboard look awesome.

They're just under $3000 AUD new in AU (obvs) for an OEM guitar which is the same price as a MIJ prestige, US fender and the like =(. Their sterling AXIS guitars are closer to $1000 AUD which is in line with mid- high end Asian OEM. The guitars themselves are great but that's no surprise. Even they're sub silo (budget) models were quite well made and playable for the price. And regarding price for OEM gtrs, MIC and MII ibanez and other Cort factory made guitars have gone through the roof in prices over the last 5-10 years, so maybe they are in line with the new normal?? I just remember buying a guitar for $550 aud in 2015 (2013 model) and it sells new with all same specs (small alpha pots and cost cutting) for $1500-2000 new now. I got a used vintage Ibanez MIJ rarity in excellent condition for ½ the price of a new MIJ model (a 335 type).

Hey Johnny! But then the real JP15 EBMM models seem to be about £4k so I don't really know what's going on at all anymore...Unbelievable.

Before sterling it was OLP that made overseas music man guitars and I have their bass vi / baritone 30" scale MM5 (it would've been £250ish $500A new), based off the MM 6 string bass silhouette (another 30" bass vi type) (would have been £3000 $6000A). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I got the top of the line JP15-7 Sterling a few months ago and returned it immediately, I don´t think I´d ever got such a bad quality guitar, TERRIBLE QC. The Stainless steel frets had not even been polished and the strings made noise just trying to bend or vibrato. The neck, the headstock, the paint job... all terrible, all with clear issues. Also, I thought it had passive pickups and that the boost was completely by-passed when not in use, but far from it. Even when not engaged, you could definitely hear it and the pickups had a definite active feel to it, which is not my thing. Personally, I can only say bad stuff about this brand, terrible, terrible quality... I paid almost 1800€ for the guitar I got and there are TONS of WAY BETTER options out there. As mentioned on this review, the Charvel DK24 is a similar feel, but better quality at half the price. Stay clear of this brand!
