During that particular time period, there was also the Dahlquist DQ -10’s. Is it possible that they could squeeze into the mix that you have just spoken about? What day did to wake people up is the most important aspect of those speakers… Time alignment.

Lol my first thought also. Looks like they've been made stand up in class for talking about hifi.

@@stimpy1226 don't laugh I loved DQ10s so much I spent a whole year trying to make my own DIY version using woofers from my large Advents and paper cone Seas drivers and a Panasonic ribbon tweeter - but I gave up 'cause I couldn't get the crossover right

@@Cocteau61 Thanks for your reply Herb. I’ve always been a follower of yours and I love watching you and Steve together. You should take your show on the road😉. One of my very few jaw-dropping moments in my 62 years of listening experience. I still remember the first time I heard them at my friends house with Macintosh equipment and I froze in disbelief. Bought them that same afternoon and I couldn’t believe my ears listening at home through my lAudio Reesearch SP-3A 1 and D-76. I can still hear the unique sound because of the time aligned design so many years ago.

I was at one of those very first screenings of “Apocalypse Now” at the Zeigfeld Theater, and still have my program. I will never forget the sonics of that helicopter flying through the room or how stunning The Doors’ “The End” sounded. Thanks so much for a great video and the inclusion of your “Apocalypse Now” experience. Some time later I saw an early preview screening of “The Wall” at the Ziegfeld, also an incredible sonic experience.

I used to admire the rows of Voice of the Theaters sitting on the stage for early 70's concerts. Every band wanted to have at least one pair for their PA system. A friend of mine had a pair of them in his bedroom. I can remember coming over after a gig one night and being mostly surprised that his parents didn't come in and scream at us for listening to them while they were trying to sleep.

I enjoyed this video so much and I hope you post more like this. I miss the 1970's so much when everyone had a Stereo System, either individual components or a rack system. Both were the rage in the 70's, but I moss so much going to a Stereo/hi-fi store and looking at all the beautiful stereo components. Even if you did not buy anything it was such a blast and so much fun. One of the Sweetest memories of my life

So glad for this discussion! I have always loved horn speakers, and I still love British mini monitors.I have been designing/ building/upgrading both types for some years now.Quad ESL 57's were my inspiration to mimic them in a 6.5" two way dynamic design, I now have a larger room to enjoy large horn designs.i love the realistic soundstage they throw!

Great show!!! Mention of my beloved Quad ESL 57's always makes me smile...that magic of recorded music has only truly come alive for me through them. The single greatest material purchase of my life. Set up right, they deliver the most accurate presentation of musical instruments and voices that I have heard. And yes, they can and do play ALL types of music and I have never had the feeling (expressed here by Steve Guttenberg) that they coerce me into playing a specific genre or type of music. They are life keepers.

Your discussion of great systems is appreciated. I loved the Voice of Highway Altec Lansing in my Accord in the late seventies. My buddies joked it wasn't car with a stereo but a rather a stereo with a car built around it! I was told the the Amp that drove it was Sony's first digital Amp? ( it was 70watts a channel), Sub in the rear shelf and 6 midrange and 4 tweeters altogether with a pioneer head unit. It was very entertaining excess with all the doors and widows open parked out in the desert listening to Jackson Browne,Steely Dan and Chicago. Ironically this system was more expensive than my home stereo at the time . My audiophile journey started with my folks buying a Scott amplifier,JBL speakers and a Gerard turntable in about 1960. My folks had wonderful dance parties and she cranked the volume which influenced me.Anyone on this site experience the Voice of the Highway?

I have had four early experiences with horn speakers. First one was back in college when a good trumpet player friend played in a Big Horn Rock band and they had Altec Voice of the Theatre for their PA. That was my first experience with horn speakers. Not long after another trumpet player friend bought a painted black pair of La Scalas for $150! True. Jim bought it from a dude who needed money fast. His loss, Jim’s gain. I do suspect that there was some other back story behind that deal and it likely might not have been legal either, but……. Going to Grad School my Major Professor’s studio had two Altec VOT speakers for his office Stereo with an AR 60 watt Integrated Amp, the AR Turntable and a big Crown 10.5” Tape Recorder in a 15 X 15 Studio. In 1977 I heard my first Klipschorns at a local audio store. 4 K-Horns stacked two in two corners, SAE pre-amp and Amp, and a Thorens Turntable cracked up loud and it was stunning! Before I depart from this existence to begin my next journey I hope to own some horn speakers just cuz! 😉 Steve, you and Herb take us all along a trip with our fond memories of Audio Systems past. Thanks Steve & Herb and Mrs. Audiophiliac.

Stacked ESL 57’s in 1979 is what started my hifi journey. Like Herb’s, turntable upgrade - mine was from my faithful Denon DP55K with Grace 707 arm and upgraded Nakamichi MC1000 reference pick-up to my twin platter Goldring Lenco GL75 with Syrinx SP3 arm fitted with my favourite Nakamichi MC 1000 cartridge the difference was profound. I re-tasked the Denon with a Clear Audio concept V2 cartridge for older records. Steve and Herb what a duo, just fantastic thanks.

I just caught up with this video which I must have missed. I also carry a memory of Peter Qvartrup's system. I used to live near Audio NOte and Peter took my into that room which I think was in a separate house next to the factory and he asked what I wanted to listen to and I said whatever he wanted and suddenly I turned round to see who had come into the room and he'd started playing a Louis Armstrong live album and I had heard his introduction and my ears told me someone was in the room. Small room, speakers stuck in the corners.

Isn't it funny that everybody says that modern HiFi is so much better than vintage and at the same time when you ask ppl what was the most impressive sound you hear the names of vintage gear. Paragon, Corner Horn, ESL, BC1, Watt&Puppy, Diva, Garrard, TD124, SPU, DL-103, TSD 15 you name it... But I agree that we made a huge progress in piano finish paint.

At 16 I was running a pair of 1947 designed '52 built twin KT66 + EL34 plus 2 more valves BBC supposed studio monitor amps with a Quad 33 pre with a Pioneer PL12D, SME 3009 and Shure V95 (I think). Speakers were KEF Conchetto drivers in a double layer MDF box with 5ft transmission line so the flat baffle oval bass driver breathed right. I worked at B&W B4 that Speaker build and swapped the KEFS for a pair of CM1s... they had an aluminium front baffle and some cast 1 piece box. Also ran a pair of DM560s. Oh yeah I hard wired the KEF crossovers with all upgraded components onto 6ml perspex. The sound was vastly superior to the £1000 worth of B&Ws they rattled the windows 2 floors up with the Quad at 3 on the volume knob. The amps were supposed to be 12watts. All 10 valves were GEC & even in 1987 to get 4 balanced Gec KT66s was upwards of £500. I earned £80 a week at B&W so even £200 for Chinese tubes was beyond my reach. The amps went in the attic, replaced by a Nakamichi (b&w distributed at the time). A tenant in the house apparently took them to the tip when he cleared the attic by the house was sold. I've never even seen pictures of them, how I miss them.
