For example: "He is a king among kings." - would mean that, even among a group of extraordinary people (ALL of them kings), even in this group, he rises to the top, respected by all the other kings as being the BEST of them. "He is a scholar among scholars" - would mean that, at a university with the finest minds around the world assembled, EVEN among this group, he would be respected as the BEST of them, even more learned than the best of them.
