Performance of Sentimental Institution performed at The Bottom Line, New York City, NY, Sept. 30, 1980.
Full pro-shot video from Steve Hackett's 'Defector' tour, shot at the Bottom Line Club in New York on the 30th of September 1980.
This impossibly rare film was shot for possible broadcast by Japanese TV, but never actually aired!
Now, a word or two about the quality of this show. As it is from a pre-broadcast source, there is a timecode at the bottom of the screen throughout, it's translucent so not too intrusive but it is there. The filming is a pro-shot but there only seem to be 2 cameras and the editing isn't the best although there are some split screen effects and basic editing.
The actual quality of the picture is very good but not perfect - I suspect this was originally shot in NTSC but the only available version is PAL so there is some slight haziness in the picture, but I'd rate it a good A even if not reaching A+ standard. Likewise, the sound is not perfect but much better than any of the circulating FM recordings.
Now, to the content of the discs - some interesting stuff! Not only do we have a full show from the Defector tour (minus the first half of 'Steppes' which is cut for reasons unknown), but we also have some tracks never before seen on video including 'Sentimental Institution' and 'It's Now or Never' which takes an amusing diversion into 'Just One Cornetto!'
All in all, a must for any Hackett fan or newbie alike!

That was surprisingly good 👍 I knew very little about Pete Hicks till now, I’m a fan! I was impressed with his performance on Narnia from 1980 and that brought me here 👍

I feel like this is from a horror film. It has a sarcastic menace to it. Excellent phrasing from Hicks on the vocals; a captivating performance.

this reminds me of those "Oldies playing in another room, and it's raining" videos I binged a couple months ago....coincidentally, around the time I got into Genesis!

Historic! Hackett's early years. Ah, those four albums are golden. I think a lot of the magic came from tinkering. Inventions. Testing things out. Being a mad scientist!

Peter "Heartthrob" Hicks wrote the lyrics to "Sentimental Institution", and they first performed it on the second leg of the Spectral Mornings tour. First performed on 22nd October 1979 at the Capitol Theatre, Aberdeen. They started performing "Hercules Unchained" as well, another Hackett/Hicks composition (and certainly unlike "Sentimental Institution"!), which eventually surfaced as the B-side on the single release of "The Show".

Thanks for this information. I was at the Capitol that night, it was my first ever Steve Hackett concert and I have been a huge fan ever since! I will never forget the date, I got married on the same date 9 years later 😊

This was a surprising single release...but what a fabulous live rendition by Pete Hicks. Close your eyes and this could be pure 1940s...

A sort of "Counting Out Times" in the belle epoque mood...

Kinda eccentric piece of music from the thirties in a prog rock album, which undoubtedly was Hackett's cultural background in his childhood.

Quite possibly the oddest track Steve ever did

Peter Hicks must've been a Ray Davies fan...
