good of him to give a nod to Big Jim Sullivan - this fellow the "no words" - just licks and riffs - sidekick on the Tom Jones Show, early 70s. as young a impressionable lad I was mesmerized by Big Jim - he turned me on to guitar - he was also a superb musician, not just a guitar player. I understand he tutored some very big Brit guitar gods on their way up. Love Big Jim's style. Tele and Ricky I recall - listen to She's a Lady for a sample

Steve! You were once the lead guitarist of a very awesome band: TOTO. I would love to see you put together a real "rockin' - not fusion" band with emphasis on the classic rock sound. I am a fan. Myself, I've been everywhere in music. I can do Jazz, Fusion, Blues, etc. but NOTHING does it for me like ROCK! Anyway, much much respect admiration from me man. MUCH! You're awesome dude!

@96MetalMonster I've been a luthier since 1980, I own 100 guitars, no junk. .The low impedance concept is very sound, just look around any studio. Les Paul made & used them in his own guitars. The lower impedance coupled with a low voltage battery powered pre amp makes for a very quiet guitar signal. Luke runs through a very elaborate Bradshaw rig & the quiet EMG's help with signal loss & noise.But they have a sterile sound with poor dynamics,

@MrUltraworld I play a Schecter with an Emg 81 in the bridge and a pair of SA's in the neck and middle. I've never experienced the problems you say, and i'm a very dynamic player and play a wide range of styles. I find the 81 pushes any amp or PA to get a really chunky sound. but thanks for your comments, because its interesting to see other problems people have with pickups i've always loved.
@MrUltraworld
@MrUltraworld 12 лет назад
@MrUltraworld Alembic, Langcaster, Seymour Duncan, Q-Tuner all make great Low Z pickups that sound alive. add one of EMG's great EQ circuits & you'll have an extremely versitile guitar the will easily do metal or Jazz. The Alembic strat set sounds very close to the old fender single coils, but there's no noise. If your going to go with Low Z pickups, look at the diffferent manufacturers & EQ circuits. Happy hunting Kevin

@TheCollisionofworlds I'm a Luthier by trade. The EMG Zakk Wylde set is the number one pickup set I get asked to install by far. Mostly these are going into Epi Les Pauls. These are run into a chainsaw sounding amp (with a pedal in front of it) But no one brings me a PRS or a real Les Paul or a Strat for a set.

@ESPsandEmgs Actually, EMGs in a good guitar can be good for all styles of music. Also, the EMG 85 seems to work very well in the Luke signatures. I bought a Luke BFR in Blackburst finish. I thought of replacing the bridge with an EMG 81, but the EMG 85 in the bridge turned out sweet. That in conjunction with the fact that I own guitars with EMG 81s made the decision very easy for me. The EMG 85 stays... XD

@96MetalMonster I have a Red Quilt C1Hellraiser. That I like a lot. I added the Strat presence (SPC) control & it makes for beautiful, almost acoustic clean tones. The SA is a nice sounding pick up too. Cheers

When Mr. Lukather who i consider the greatest ever... he can sound like himself or no one... try to pull that off... tonebone and radial gear is great... use as a preamp w/ ts9 and 65 princeton gives YOU a tone.. you will never be as great as your hero but will help you be your best... so be your best and have a tone all your own...

@ESPsandEmgs Awwwww XD I have EMG 89 that has that split switch. He sounds like 85 on double and SA on single coil :D It is not that bad :D I have VOX AD 50VT amp so basically I have great sound, on neck position I have SLV single coil, but I didn't put pick up on the mid position, can't decide yet, should I go another SLV or what XD

Unless you were just clowning (I can be a little slow sometimes), Big Jim Sullivan was a UK session player from the 60s and 70s, and one of the first to use a Wah pedal effect on recordings, and predates the official patent of the Wah pedal. Yeah, more nerdy music historian crap than hipster. RU-vid video: /watch?v=A0A8cPj_fPo @4:30

@ClassicRockRiffs1234 Not that hard to get a sound like that. For me, the thing is keeping it simple and building your sound with your ears and not with your eyes. What IS hard is keeping it sounding like that consistently. I swear, I just played through my JVM for 2 hours with nothing but a delay pedal and it was glorious: I'm on the clouds right now. Somedays, however, it sounds like shit no matter what I do to it or how much I turn it up. Go figure...
