The voice AND the licks. Steve Marriot is THE MOST under rated singer, songwriter, guitarist in history.

As he sang in Black Coffee, "my skin is white, but my soul is black". Normally that kind of stuff would make me cringe, but in Steve Marriot's case you have to take him seriously. That performance came from more than just a precocious musical talent. Epic!

It warms my heart to see that younger people fall in love with mr. Steve Marriotts voice . I have had him as my favorit since i was a little boy. One lucky day i got to meet him in my own hometown, where he made a great preformance. I am now 68 years old, and still listen to his music.

If your father was in Peckham back in the day, we may well have been neighbours. I'm a very old man now, but I'd give my vocal chords for a voice like that. Saw him perform, many times. If my memory serves me correctly, this show took place in Putney. Not sure.

During the 60's there were so many talented guitarist. But the headliners like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Alvin Lee, Carlos Santana got all the publicity. Steve Marriott was so underrated as a guitarist and what a soulful voice, tragically he died in a house fire in 1991 while planning to record another album with his ex-Humble Pie team member, Peter Frampton. We'll never know what could have been. So sad RIP Steve.

You are probably aware of this Timothy but for others who may not be, you can actually get a taste of what was missed if you dig around. They had actually laid down three new tracks together just before Marriott was killed. Have a listen to "The Bigger They Come" and "I Won't Let You Down" from Frampton's album "Shine On: A Collection". And finally give your ears a treat and listen to the stunning "Out Of The Blue". The glorious clean guitar work and Marriott's simple vocal almost brings tears to my eyes. There is a fourth song, "An Itch You Can't Scratch", which is rumoured to have been in that final work with Frampton but that has never been verified. He definitely still had it all going on when he died!

You said exactly what I have been posting about Marriott for as long as I have been online Thom. I'm a child of the 60s and was there, a devoted follower, throughout all of his career. I have broad tastes and love a lot of artists but there has never been anyone else for me. I followed Humble Pie around when they were active in the UK and on into the Marriott's All Stars and Packet of Three stages. His guitar playing originally was not his strength. I always preferred the Clempson era of HP as he was a master blues and rock guitarist (and still is) and he brought the tough edge to HP they needed to complement Steve's unique voice. To see him come back into things with this level of guitar mastery to match his voice filled out his place in history for me. To not be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as an individual talent is a sad omission. He is in my mind, the incomparable best voice of British Rock ever. Robert Plant owes his entire career to Marriott. Check out "You Need Loving" by the Small Faces and towards the end look out for Plant's end to Whole Lotta Love - note for note, inflection for inflection years before Led Zep were created. He was in line for the Led Zepellin post until his management stepped in and threatened Page with broken fingers. He was considered for the Rolling Stones position by Richards but Jagger, quite rightly, didn't want a second front man on stage with him as Steve would not have sat in the passenger seat for long. Acknowledged singing virtuosos like Rod Stewart all are behind his talent and soul. His stage craft and mastery of a crowd were legendary which is why Humble Pie were always the band to watch. I was seeing Freddie Mercury's front of stage a capella crowd involvement being done by Steve years before Queen, and with that powerful voice, Marriott did it all from the front of the stage in large venues stepped out in front of the mic! There will be many others with their own unique talents but he will never be replaced, and he will never be bettered.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. They often reward mediocrity and ignore the greats. Steve was included as part of a Small Faces/Faces award which was ridiculous as the groups may have had some of the same members, but were totally different. Steve has also been ignored or derided by Rolling Stone who has never included him in any of the 100 greatest singers (or whatever else) lists. Can you even imagine?!? Steve Marriott is a legend for those of us who are lucky enough to witness and remember this great performer.

Thank you for reviewing this later Marriott performance (1985). By this time in Steve's life, he was in his late thirties and had been singing his guts out since he was 13 yrs old. His voice was a bit ragged from years of self abuse (smoking, drinking& snorting) and scream/singing to tens of thousands of fans in big sold out arena concerts. Even he admitted that he couldn't sing the high notes like he used to in such classics as Hot&Nasty. I think his gravelly, powerful voice suits singing the blues to a tee, he earned the right to sing the blues. By this time, he had also become an incredible blues guitarist. Another song from this same concert is also worth a listen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XuRwIMnNaiw.html "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and interesting contrast to his original version with Small Faces (their 1st hit record in 1966). As a side note, you may have noticed how big Steve's guitar is. This great singer with the huge voice was only about 5'2" !! God Bless your Soul, Steve....

Glad your liking steve, His story is incredible, and one that needs turning into a movie. As a young kid, he was spotted on the streets of London, busking for money. The great Lionel Bart, ( of Oliver, the academy award winning musical) Stood and listened, then invited Steve to play the art full dodger on stage, which he did. Bart said, marriott was the dodger In every way. Steve drifted into acting which he loved, but, big time escaped him. So with the faces, Ronnie wood et all He found fame. Later when rod became lead, Steve moved on. He auditioned for the rolling stones, but legend has it mick jagger vetoed it, as he felt Steve's voice would overpower his own. Steve auditioned for led zeppelin a new group being formed, but, the lead was given to Robert plant, who then used a hell of a lot of Steve's material. Steve moved on to humble pie, Then badfinger. Everyone around him was becoming megar rich, rod, Ronnie wood, Robert plant, bu not Steve. He incessantly pushed for a greater share of the humble pie royalties To no avail. I believe Sharon Osbornes (ozzys wife) father an impresario controlled most of Steve's finances, material, and rights. Their is a story, that while pursuing him for money, Steve while in New York was picked up at his hotel on the pretext of settling what he viewed as his, instead he was driven to a meeting, where no other than John gotti the mafia Don, Warned him off, Steve had no choice but to drop it. Bitter, and broke, back in England Steve earned a little money playing in pubs, and without a house or property, he lived at a friend's house Pretty destitute. Steve was an alcoholic, and became a coke addict, who can blame him. Late one evening, the fire brigade and police attended a fire at the friend's house he lived in. Steve's body was found wedged between the bed and the wall in an upstairs room. A stray cigarette had smoulder ed the bedclothes and started a fire which killed him, he died of smoke inhalation. Never has so much talent been lost And never was a man so ill served by those in the industry he loved, I'm grateful that we can still see him And the brilliant singer songwriter Musician Steve marriott was.

Steve Marriott is one of my very top British rockers from the 1960s and 1970s. I only saw him once, in 1980, when he had the FM hit Fool for a Pretty Face. He came on after the opening act, with two bands after him. I don't even remember the headliner anymore. I was there for Humble Pie. His band The Small Faces had hits in the 1960s in the UK, but only Itchycoo Park hit in the states. Marriott them formed Humble Pie with 17 year old Jerry Shirley on drums and Peter Frampton on the other guitar. He died too young!

He was first choice for Led Zep when Page got the idea. His management stepped in and asked Page if he could play with broken fingers. Surprisingly, Marriott was never taken on. But he did recommend a rather talented Small Faces fan who acted as a bit of a gopher for them. That lad did rather well. Listen to "You Need Lovin'" by the Small Faces, particularly the coda at the end. That really is Marriott singing that song years before Led Zep were even thought of.

Steve became famous first as a stage actor in his early teens. He played Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist and did very well. In his mid teens, he quit the stage and declared he planned to become a rock star instead. He and some friends started the Small Faces since they were all short guys. Their biggest commercial hit was "Itchycoo Park". He split away from that band and they hired Rod Stewart and Ron Wood and since they were both tall, the band became "The Faces". Steve joined up with Peter Frampton at this time and they started up Humble Pie. I saw them many times early in Detroit. Always a great show. Glad to see reactors have discovered him. Steve died in a house fire. Peter went solo within a couple of years of HP's beginning.

Australian Dave Hole is one of the best blues slide players in the world, and way ignored in the states! Check him out. His song "Take a Swing" off the SHORT FUSE BLUES CD will blow your face off! ( By the way, I saw Steve Marriott, with Humble Pie, live back in '73 - I've had a smile on my small face ever since. )

Rarely do get that kind of extreme quality of voice and guitar combined in the one package. Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore around the same time period, both better guitarists but although they have ok voices, Rory's is pretty descent, they're still not in Steve's league.

"she had the nerve to put this bald headed fat little has been down"...........never Steve (RIP - what a tragic end btw). You maybe never reached the levels of fame others with (imho) lesser talent did but you are one of the voices from the 60's that will live on
