Saw in a documentary that The reason he left humble pie was that he felt he was not a good enough guitarist, may be what we’re watching here is what he worked on after humble pie, and became a lot better but I always thought it was good anyhow… Amazing how Authentically these guys play the American blues

I listen to them all. Joe bonamassa , Steve Ray Vaughan, Clapton. Etc. But I always come back to this live performance by. Steve Marriott , being a devoted Jazz and blues fan for the last 50 odd years this is the best . The voice , and the flawless blues guitar.

Brilliant frontman! Brilliant guitarist! Brilliant singer with soul and guts! One of the most outstanding talents British music ever had, from a pint- sized geezer! Surely one of the most underrated and sadly, shamelessly ripped-off artists of all time!!! Totally love this guy, his decline was outrageous! Talent like this is priceless. Just imagine if he ,instead of being in the Small Faces , much as I loved them, had wound up in The Yardbirds. How things could've been so different . This sort of talent is shoulder to shoulder with any Yardbird intern. The Small Faces were beautifully original and innovative! Humble Pie were a force of nature. To have fortunately seen Humble Pie ( 70's) and then Steve solo at The Royal Standard in Walthamstow New Years Eve late 80's is a decline that should never have happened in my opinion. Steve Marriott is someone who should be in the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame no question. A talent that sadly we will never see the like again!! God love this fabulously talented man!!! R.I.P Steve!!!❤️🤘🎸

All very true! Steve's vocal range and diversity was truly amazing. Developed as a child and worked at the craft his entire career. As a guitarist, his time was the 1970's on. He was considered a little limited in his playing during the 60's Small Faces. There were better choices at the time for the Yardbirds. He worked hard and by Humble Pie he'd arrived. One of the best. He did go into the Hall with Small Faces 2012.

I'm here to tell you that Steve Marriott is THE great unsung hero of English music. Not only was he a GREAT guitarist -he is rightfully remembered as an excellent songwriter -and is thoroughly un-appreciated as such (back me Noel). He was/is an amazing singer as well. Just an all-around legend who is unrealized and un-heralded. I love him -always. Ogden's Nut-Gone-Flake is a work of GENIUS.

I agree with Julian T. SM never got the credit he deserved for his talent. He was one of the first “Mods” in theUK, but he was such a student of American blues. His acoustic song with The Pie, “Every Mother’s Son” was as good a rural Mississippi blues balled as anyone from Mississippi could do!

Great song, intro, chord progression, middle etc. No-one can match his voice and performance. He started his first band when he was 12! Dude! He was rockin’ it at 16 and writing great songs in his teens. Rock on Mr Marriott, where ever you are!

Today is the 26th anniversary of his death and I never heard this track or saw this performance before, I always thought of Marriott for his vocals in the Small Faces and Humble Pie, and saw a few interviews where others suggest that he wasn't a confident or accomplished guitarist. This definitely shows what a great guitarist and musical force he was. And how sad it is that he isn't around. He's the true mod father and so much more. I'm glad to have lived within living memory of him, Plonk and Mac.

I could have cried when I saw him perform with "The Packet of three" at the Buddle in Wallsend which only held 150 people max. I know the lady who ran the venue and and she told me that she first met Steve when he was having a cup of tea with the cleaners. She told me that he was just a smashing bloke with no ego whatsoever. During Small Faces to Humble Pie, Steve was always at a party, growing up with his music. When music was more than music. It formed a brotherhood that lasted through the good and bad times of our lives. As a veteran I took this music to different bases across the United States, to Germany. To Central America. All my brothers thank you Steve. RIP.

This vid played w/ Ten years After: Recorded Live - Slow Bluse in C is the perfect duet. One of the best jamers & one of the best voices in Rock & Roll history. I saw this vid and knew it sounded like Alvin Lee.

Keith Richards had wanted his pal Steve Marriott to replace the departed Mick Taylor, but Jagger gave it a thumbs down following the rehearsal, not wanting to risk being upstaged by this pint-sized dynamo.

***** True but Jagger & Keef were right in turning him down. The Stones with Marriott would've probably released one or two of the greatest rock records of all time but after that the Stones would be no more. Super bands with super egos don't last!!
@Stephanjnj
@Stephanjnj 9 лет назад
Cassio Trocourt Jagger with ego in hand turned him down, which is not surprising. KR would have likely given him the nod, but it didn't matter as veto power was duly exercised. Interesting to note that Marriott was never known as being an egomaniac, and despite the ability to own any stage he preferred to share the spotlight with bandmates, including Frampton and Ridley in Humble Pie and Ronnie Lane in Small Faces. It took manager Dee Anthony to give Marriott the nudge to become a more dominant front man with Humble Pie, and only after Frampton split.

Absolutely right...Steve was a very inclusive musician...for him it was all about the music...he had a relatively small ego for such a huge talent!

I am a Clapton fan but he does become boring and predictable at times. Now this performance is raw and pure unadulterated blues. Just the way it should be. Love his playing. And that voice..... wow.

Oh my lord that guitar work is top shelf 👍. I was only 9 years old at this 1985 point. I’d have chopped my little finger off to see this gig now. I will forgive his denim dungarees for the first few licks of chords on this one. Even reminds me of Hendrix some of that guitar work. Breathtaking.
