aww... mymarriott! 18 years gone yesterday and missed more then ever. I hope he, Plonk and Ridley are zoomin 'round out in the universe somewhere still 'cause their music & spirit still lives on here. I say it all the time but no Rock musician could ever touch Marriott to me, shine on Steve - u r missed.
A sad end to an excellent and unique musician.Clearly frustrated with the questions from that woman. She won't get it stuck in her world of 80's pop.Stanley was legendary, narrating on the ogdens lp.
I met Steve Marriott in Sainsburys once. The previous comment was quite right, he was a very approachable man. I also saw him play with Packet of three and they DID play Small Faces tunes.
Major talent, Steve Marriott. Invented ' rock' as the 70's knew it. Met him in a pub 'down in ol soho '... in Walthamstow, during soundcheck with Packet of Three. First class fella.
Nutgone Flake is a streak of genius especially with the idea to include the unique one and only Stanley Unwin. I was born in the same year as Steve and feel extremely sad at the shocking death of him, can't imagine losing my life at forty four. Loved all of their songs, all of four of them so talented... Cigarettes are the curse and sad death of many.
God bless and keep Steve Marriot's soul. His music has brought me so many hours of happiness and good times. He was taken from us way too soon, and I really miss him!
I can't understand some of this, but it's clear that this interviewer doesn't know much about Steve Marriott. He seems quite together here, not as been reported about him. So talented, & so exploited by his management. It's a shame he never got the respect & money he rightly deserved! Combination of a lot of things gone wrong. but what a huge talent this guy was. RIP Steve!
I feel the same. As an american, I feel cheated that we didn't get more of his and the Small Faces stuff played o'er the airwaves and soundwaves. It is a shame that it's still hard to get Odgen's from retailers today.
I bought a copy of "...Nut Gone..." from an eBay seller . I really wanted for the mono edit , but I'd have to plunk-down some 'readies' for the (excellent) box set to get that . The stereo edit is still tops , nevertheless.
not seen this before...shame the great man has been gone so long.......but never forgotten. my next child is due in 9 wks & if hopefully he is a boy MARRIOTT Joseph Kee will be born...me daughter is already called AUTUMN in tribute to the greatest band & singer ever!
When he was in small faces he had such a sweet presence. Here you can see the toll Steve’s life has taken on him. RIP you rockin imp. Miss you forever.
this clip makes me smile..hes like a builder about to give her quote or something on her guttering..totally humble and has one thing most artists and muscians dont have...CHARISMA...complete one off..love it where he says.."they can shout for em..they dont get it.."..cool as fuck..legend
Aww Marriott!!!!!. Wish there were more interviews of him - wish there more musicians like him! Thanks for posting this - it's great! I miss Marriott's music, just shows what a down to earth and funny guy he was and how about that Stanley Unwin eh? Haha! Cheers & Stay cool wontcha?
I saw Steve Marriott in a few places but he did a gig in the late 80's in a pub in Northampton and the power went off half way through the set 'not to worry' he said and out came the acoustic guitars! All or Nothing acoustic! He was having to shout, but he was still cracking up laughing!
@clubninjarock He had tons of radio play in Small Faces. With Humble Pie, there was nothing as friendly for Commercial Radio. And then they vanished. Whoosh!
Stanley Unwin...he was great ...and the Great Stevie .. .I miss you all so much. "wobblin up the apples and pairs and tiddle-po all down the road"...hahahahh Mickey Marlborough..
This woman was a quick hit on TV cos of her hair and bad fashion.. But with the fashion she wasnt seen again. Its not her fault, its the producers, for allowing someone with little intelligence to interview someone with amazing talent. Marriot didnt need to fret over moments like this as he was idolised by generations of people who loved his music. Remember it was the music industry changing that left him in the cold.. Shit bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran were seen as more appealing!
@georgebur Rod Stewart had a great rock voice. I wasn't there but I was under the impression that the Pie was huge for the 71-72 time period. We agree that Marriott was amazing...I'm also not surprised his style did not translate to massive radio play.
The first minute of the interview you can sense that Steve is a bit bothered by the interviewer's statements....the "surviving" comment as well as Humble Pie not being as successful as The Small Faces....you can hear it in Steve's voice and his frustrated laugh at 0:50.....the girl obviously was deeply into Bananarama and the GO GO's....Steve was a gentleman and a class act.
This interviewer was in the Vanguard of the modern presenter in that she knew Jack Shit about the people she was interviewing unless they were hIs or her heroes! She is so amazing I can't even remember her stupid name....BUT....I will never forget the names of her Immortal subjects STEVE MARRIOTT (The Best Pop vocalist of ALL TIME!) and Professor Stanley Unwin - Icon of 60s humour and legendary narrator of Ogden's Nut Gone Flake!
Check Amazon they are most likely to have it on CD. I've got it and play is often. One can almost dream oneself back into the 60's. Steve is a rock GOD. The bee's knees.
I love Steve Marriott. Humble Pie was my first concert. But I can't understand a word they're saying. Could someone please translate this interview into English?
Stephen Flint It's what happens when interviewers attempt to answer own question when don't have a foggy clue. It's plain lazy unprofessional. Luckily Steve quick with the comeback honest answer.
Well sales wise Humble Pie didn't do much in the UK where this was filmed, and it's hard to argue that much of the Humble Pie stuff was anywhere near what he did with The Small Faces on a creative level...still, bit of a rude question
She couldn't even remember the album's title. It was only 16 years since it was released. Everyone remembers Be Here Now and OK Computer from 16 years back ffs.
Itchycoo park, "they dont get it ,but they can shout for it" lol ,although he did start playing it in the last few months, but definitely not sha la la la lee
I never said he wasn't in good humor....I have nothing against Muriel, she was just ill prepared to interview Steve is all....Steve looks the way he does because of age...he looks great to me....IMHO his music became far more gritty and real after the Small Faces...though I would place "ItchyKoo Park..(is that how you spell it?)...as one of my childhood favorites...top 40 at least.
Funny you should mention that because I love it too, BUT both Kenney and Steve have said in different filmed interviews, that was the sound they wanted to get away from. They wanted more harder Tin Soldier sounding songs. I love them both.
Sadly, Steve turned into quite a prick in his final years. When he was killed, in 1991, not a single word was heard from Ronnie (Lane) so something bad must have happened to divide them. Ronnie died, from complications of M.S., in '97 in Trinidad, Colorado. It's just really really sad to realize that the end, for both of them, was so tragic and final. During their time together they redefined the word, "synergy." R.I.P. Steve Mariott and Ronnie Lane.
You can’t say Steve turned into a prick. You don’t know unless you were there. He and Ronnie maybe had a falling out but that doesn’t mean Steve was a prick
Just bizarre, wasn't it? I love Steve Marriott but had never seen him interviewed before. To see him reduced to having to pander to this zero was just awful. Her tripping up on the album title was pathetic. It always amuses me that people who have no interest in music manage to get jobs which requires them to discuss it. I'm not certain her gender had much to do with it, but she certainly didn't distinguish herself in this piece.Being Australian, I have absolutely no idea who she is ha ha
@mechOMadness, how horribly cruel and dismissive of you. Steve is the greatest white soul singer of all time and to write sneeringly about his accidental and untimely death is heartless and nasty. Then to say 'google Muriel gray' like she's ever done owt special!!
@clubninjarock Humble Pie were of much lower profile than Small Faces. "Natural Born Boogie" was the only single I recall and it did not show Steve Marriott's INCREDIBLE talent to any advantage. It was illogical that Rod Stewart took the Faces anywhere - Marriott was a miles better singer. A different league - up there with Paul Rodgers.
RandyM856 1994 WTF... really?!? Steve died in 1991 you idiot! The video clearly says it was made in 1984. As for your question... Schulenberg, besides being the name of a city in Germany, is also my last name. You aren't that intelligent are you?
That Stanley Urwin was their biggest mistake. Might've been a stoned idea in the first place, but it became a dire bloody drag to get through all that "charming" cockney yapping on "NUT GONE".Still a classic, but as a result became the least played of their albums.Probably even more so,in the U.S.. a market which they obviously would've liked to have cracked.Confused Steve went totally overboard with bloody "bluesrock" to get the Yanks onboard.Which deservedly so,went out like a candle, around'76.
