A rainy gray day outside, but a multi-hued groove party inside at the first Modular San Diego show of the year. special thanks to CM Curatorial for providing their rad space for our gathering!
The performers and their setups, in order:
Donny Van Zandt opened the afternoon with a slow, atmospheric drone soundscape. electricity skitters, surging across the edges of textural washes, monophonic leads, and tonal strums; transforming into rhythmic pulses, plucks, and thudding kicks. a deft progression through increasingly heavy elements, then winding out as softly as it began.

Next, Jackson Davis brought a delightfully danceable assortment of light, sweet IDM beats, with shades of console-era chiptune arps & blips, and deep squelching acid bass. playful, uplifting melodies balanced with nicely heavy drums. a little trance, a little thunder, a little modernized throwback, and a lot of fun.

Steve McQuarry (Synsor) followed with an introspective memory collage, beginning with blurred, gritty, growling textures and pitched resonances ringing out over whisper delay-shaped vocals. a brief percussive passage gave way to a dreamy, unhurried ending: watery ambient pads and looped chords.

Delta-Sine drew the afternoon to a close with a rolling, driving, solid techno set. thrumming, pulsing basslines collide, warping into new dance shapes. the percussion briefly pauses to allow for windswept effects, then the steady kick returns to guide the crowd deeper into the winter groove.
