would love to see you review Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Down By The River. Stopped me dead in my tracks the first time I heard it after someone had put it on at a bar jukebox: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KflCXmEX6BY.html
This version on the Midnight Special was recorded before the album was released, so this is literally among one of the first times anyone had heard it. The lyrics here aren't even the same as the album. You really do want to follow this up with the studio version. :-)
Steve Miller's godfather was the legendary Les Paul who taught him how to play guitar. Some other great Steve Miller songs are Take The Money And Run, Keep On Rockin' Me, Jet Airliner, Livin' In The U.S.A., and The Joker. 🙌✌️
The question to everyone's answer / Is usually asked from within / But the patterns of the rain and the truth they contain / Have written my life on your skin
Saw him live a lot in the 60s and 70s. Never heard him play a song the same way twice. Always a jam session. Boz Scaggs was a member in the first couple of albums
@@kpj9535 I've loved that song since I was about 6 years old, I owed three 45s, Abracadabra, Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, and Eddie Grant's Electric Avenue, and played them all the time!
This is a pretty sweet live version - quite different than the studio version I'm familiar with. I've never heard it this funked up and I LIKE IT. The studio version is great, too, but in a very different way.
Totally serious now! You gotta check out a band called Cake doing a song called 'Short Skirt Long Jacket'! The video is basically the 1st reaction video before RU-vid was a thing! The song is amazing!
This is from what I always refer to is the middle period of Steve Miller’s career. A very lucrative and profitable period for him. Made him a legend when everything he recorded turned to gold. His early psychedelic/space cowboy period featured his childhood friend on rhythm guitar. That was Boz Scaggs.
I think his songs from his early period were much better than his Fly Like an Eagle period. Maybe it's because they played the hell out of these songs. Check out the Steve Miller Band Anthology, 1968--1972 album. Every song is top notch and he's playing with musicians Nicky Hopkins, Lee Michael's, Bob Scaggs, and Richard Thompson. I think he also did a song with Duane Allman. He was and still is a great musician.
I've never heard that version! Only ever listened to the Album one. Awesome! Hearing the song for the first time. You're right about that Bass player, Solid from start to finish.
Love all of Steve Miller's Songs....Listen to Take the Money and Run... It's a little story about Billy Joe and Bobby Sue....I named my youngest daughter Bobby Sue.. Lol...Love your listening to Steve Miller....every song is awesome!
This band was at the forefront with their fans smoking the best weed at their live shows...with good reason. Seal did a decent job with his rendition. This song was well ahead of its time.
Yeah, when I hear the anti-marijuana crowd say "Oh no! Marijuana (cannabis, thank you) is so much stronger than it used to be! It's too strong!" 🙄🤨 Those fools aren't comparing it to the killer Humboldt buds from back in the day... Some of the Buddha Thai in those days (the real stuff) even had opium on it... Steve looked like he'd had some of that... Legal high quality weed (with nothing added) is a helluva lot better than smoking god knows what...!
@@mr.knowitall6440 well you are trying to live up to your name. There may have been some strong strains back in the day. The science of today's genetically enhanced Mary Jane. The thc levels are off the charts now compared to stuff most used back in the day. 🤯
Damn you got the Sun Ra inspired version of ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ with this one. One of the best Steve Miller songs is ‘Livin In The USA’ and groovy ‘Wild Mountain Honey’ Jamal, peace brother.✌️
Yea! Thank you, Jamel. I've requested Steve Miller several times. Such a distinct vocalist, extremely talented guitarist. Sooooo many great tunes. You're gonna really enjoy this rabbit hole!!
I'm going to disagree. I've heard the studio version a million times. It has a good vibe for driving on a sunny day. This is the first time I've heard this version, it has a much more late night vibe, and highlights the darker lyrics of the verses. I love it.
Steve Miller had a huge hit song in 1967 called "Livin in the USA. and then he really hit the Big Time around 1973 to the late 70s. He was a 70s superstar. Everything he wrote turned into Gold or Platinum records.
The most underrated guitarist ever, he was tutored by the great Les Paul who was a Luthier and designed Guitars for Gibson. And no Seal didn't write this song. While playing for a band called Jigsaw in the early seventies we opened for Steve in Detroit 77 or maybe 78 I was 15 or 16.
They are a great band, go down that rabbit hole Mr Jamal and enjoy! Come on now, LAWD HE CAN PLAY THAT THANG. Locked down love, peace and music from East Coast, England. xxx
Thank you for the awesome throwback!! Steve Miller band is one of my favs! Saw them live about 10yrs ago and they still got it!! Age range of the crowd was between 20-60 yrs old!! Was fantastic singing along with 20somethings who also knew all the lyrics!! 🥰🎶
You have to check the studio version J-Man. Some artists believe a live performance should be unique from the studio track; others try to render the studio take as close as they can live. Steve Miller is an artist who likes to stretch it live. This version is sooooo smooth and ethereal.
Yeah, you *definitely* need to check out the studio version of this. This is more like a jam session; many of the lyrics aren't even the same. The album cut is a totally different vibe (and probably closer to what you expect, since Seal based his version off of it), with some really spacey and hypnotic synthesizer work.
Good song I love this band all their songs are great check out THE JOKER he wants to shake my tree.... Jamel you missed out on growing up with the 70's music imho one of the best musical era's. I'm glad you can enjoy it now. ❤
Respectfully I can't agree at all. That's the shallow end of the Steve Miller pool of songs. It's like my bonkers friend who thiniks ZZ Top's best song is Cheap Sunglasses.
Steve Miller is a seriously cool cat. So much cool stuff to choose from. I always liked Mercury Blues. You are in for a lot of "Oh, that guy!" moments when you dig into Steve Miller.
I saw Steve Miller in Concert in the mid-'90s. When he was performing this song they did a close-up of his hands and guitar with a thermal camera and showed it on a large screen. added a whole other level to the song.
Steve Miller’s album, 5, was my introduction to this awesome cat (& equally awesome band). Goin’ To Mexico is still one of my favorite SMB tunes. And to all you loyal fans of this channel, I hope you’re all hanging tough, staying positive and feeling the love as well as spreading it. Peace to all my Sisters & Brothers.
Steve grew up in Milwaukee. His dad was a musician. So there was a rotation of musicians coming and going including Les Moved to San Francisco in the 60s and got his start in music.
Then he'll have to watch the Blues Brothers, to meet the co-writer of that song... "The Colonel" 😎 Why do we pronounce it "kernel"... it sho' ain't spelled that way...
I saw Steve Miller Band in concert 3 or 4 years ago, and he said Les Paul was his godfather and taught him how to play. He said he was playing in bars when he was 12 and his Mom had to drive him to the gigs. He put on a great show. I never got to see him in the 70's, always wanted to.
I saw them live at a fair in Milwaukee WI,(Steve Millers' hometown) back in 1982 and the lead singer parachuted out of a small plane onto the stage next to Lake Michigan! It was superb!
This version is good and I very much respect live performances but I gotta admit I give the edge to Steve Miller's studio version of this song a little more.
Thank you Jamel!!! I know I'm not the only one that was requesting Steve Miller, but I'm glad you got to it. Next try out Abacadabra, The Joker and Take the Money and Run.. All great tracks.. I hope you enjoy it..
I talked my parents into getting tickets to see him, so I was lucky enough to see him play at a festival near me in 2019!! Still plays an absolutely amazing show!!!
One awesome Band, Great song...Loved being alive and young during this time, Love me some 60's/ 70's Classics, best music...Altho I can feel all music from head to toe. Thanks for the memories, Peace
