It always struck me as interesting that the movie "Gladiator", starring Russell Crowe, was released on May 1, 2000, in the United States -
the same date that Steve Reeves passed away.
"Gladiator" had a significant impact on the film industry and helped to reignite interest in historical epics. The 2001 Oscars paid tribute
to Gladiator and featured a memorial to, among others, Steve Reeves.
Dino De Laurentiis was honored at the 2001 Oscars. Dino was an Italian and naturalized-American film producer. Along with Carlo Ponti, he was one of the producers who brought Italian cinema to the international scene at the end of World War II. He produced or co-produced more than 500 films, of which 38 were nominated for Academy Awards. Conan the Barbarian was a Dino De Laurentiis film...
Dino in his acceptance speech spoke of his hopes that Italian movie-making would make a comeback. Steve Reeves was, of course, huge in Italy and overseas and played a role in the success of Italian movies with "Hercules" which is often cited as one of the earliest and most popular examples of the "sword and sandal" genre.
