I'm highly impressed by Synergy Vocals. They really blend their voices exceedingly well with the clarinets and strings (and mallets). I hate it when other singers try to make the piece about them. These singers understand Reich's idea about voices and instruments doubling each other.

a beautiful rendition of an otherworldly work of staggering genius; i first saw 18 musicians performed live around the time of the initial album's release, in 1978, then later by the same reich ensemble in the 1990s. really, i have clue how anyone could possibly not love this piece.
@peramarkovic7148

This amazing music piece absolutely hypnotizes me. What is so attractive in it? I believe that it is because serial principle applied in this music brings (or invokes) in us emotions and thoughts, but somehow from nowhere. And that appearance or invocations of emotions and thoughts is miracle: the sun rise and sets, seasons follows each other by its order, rain falling, wind is blowing, the sea rises and falls... We are sleeping, then awakening, dressing, then we eat, work, relax... Everything around us and in us is just an serial principle, nothing else. But from where then are coming emotions? What we thinking? What's that colors our life? What gives aroma and character to our existence, to existence of everything? Answers are ours, in us. The miracle of this music is that provokes such internal dialogue, during its durance and long after. Like meditation that leads us to at least partial enlightenment. Astonishing. By the way, sound recording is absolutely magnificent. The best of at least seven or eight recordings I found and listened until now. Of course, that is result of fantastic performance of musicians, each of them.

Wild Hunt Trumpeter I don't know. There appears to be a precision to the pieces that makes me think "how does this happen exactly without the guidance of a conductor" But then Itay Talgram's approach to conducting www.ted.com/talks/itay_talgam_lead_like_the_great_conductors?language=en would seem to be let the musicians play, which then maybe is what is happening here

***** It would seem to me, that in this piece each musician plays a rather simple pieces of melody, but they play it independently from the others, and from that this music emerges. They just have to follow the notes and play their own parts. While in typical symphony, the musicians have to play in cohesion, which needs conducting. Also there doesn't seem to be much of tempo and dynamic changes for the whole group or smaller groups, where conducting would help.
@jppitman1
@jppitman1 6 лет назад
Written by a human for humans which have to be kind of super-human, like this Ensemble, to play it. Wow, to be alive at a time when a masterpiece was written. Like any innovative orchestral score you hear new things with each listen upon the ebbs and flows. I remember distinctly the morning when I first heard it. On WAMU-FM in DC there was an hour-long Sunday morning radio show called Galaxis, which opened my stodgy ears to a whole new and unusual sound world. Steve Whealton was the host and had a connection to someone in NYC and received a tape copy, I guess in 1977. I was transfixed.
