This week Steve Reviews 9. A dark and creepy CGI movie which released in 2009. Rated a 12, this is definitely not a movie you want kids to be watching! Twitter: / reviews_steve Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=16101082
Meep I wouldn’t say 9 is forgotten. Unlike the minions, 9 has a fan base despite it only being one movie and being aired in 2009 it’s still heavily talked about same goes for coralline.
The reason why I love this film when I was a kid, is because it didn’t treat me like I was a kid, like the Batman animated series. I wish more animated kid films were like this nowadays
I think there's a big difference between children's media and child accessable media. Children's media, like you said, treats you like a kid, while child accessable media is just books/shows/movies that can be enjoyed by anyone, just including children, rather than catering towards them. And I much prefer the latter. (If you want an example, just think of Mickey mouse clubhouse vs. gravity falls)
After Coraline, 9 was the next 'horror' my mom showed me. I think these two really gave me a good look into psychological and sometimes bittersweet horror. Gave me a lot of appreciation for these shows. Even if 9 seems wonky with characters and animation, it still remains a fav!
"Kids movie" Bruh I'm 22 and still in love with this masterpiece lmao, like all this world is so chaotic and bizarre. I've never seen something similar else, love it so much!
I remember watching 9 as a kid and being absolutely obsessed with it. I remember drawing the characters because of this and my mom found it kind of strange that a 4 year old was into such a dark movie.
Interesting fact: in Russia dub was changed and whole story was changed, fairly saying multshow was given meaning. So you even could do review on rus story
Funny coincidence, that changes for russian dub was made by popular russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, who wrote the Metro 2035 series. He also made a book about what happend before the movie "9" Sorry for my english, i`m not a native speaker
@@dad9979 it would be hard to tell about everything that were changed so I would tell about main differences. In russian dub there is twice more dialogues than in original and story has more Christian motives like 9 is the chosen one, also if in original dolls just soul of scientist just different sides of him, in russian vers every doll have part of people souls that was important to scientist, like 1st is soul of dictator shown in the beginning and big doll had soul of his bodyguard, twins are scientist children and there his wife (sry I don't remember their numbers) and one of them is scientist friend etc. Also in the end their redeemed their sins and there monologue about who they were and what their understand in the end (like 1st sacrifice himself and redeemed his soul)
9 is a underated film but a sad one. Plus the fandom wasn’t that bad they actually came up with great theories and how the sequel would be even though the idea of the sequel got canceled.
Yes , there was a plan and if I remember correctly the sequel supposedly it was gonna be about how the remaining characters had to deal what happen after the movie and that there was gonna be a new threat. That’s all I know from what I read but I think it would’ve been to have a mini series based from the movie.
This is one of my fav films since I was a child. This movie just stuck with me, I was never terrifed by this film. I was actually amazed with the action sequences, it was so gorgeous. It is ashamed it is so underrated. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
Yes it's a cyber punk film . Lowkey It's a film about the calamity of technology (EVIL ROBOTS) and it's negative effects on the world it had so there in the post apocalyptic world and the punks or rebles ( being the sticked dolls ) aka stitched punks
Agreed. I remember watching it when it came out and I was blown away. I watched it over and over, still one of my favorite spooky movies to watch on Halloween. I was surprised how few people actually knew about it globally. In Canada, (at least in my province, anyway) it got a shit ton of advertising and was really popular.
One of my favorite movies of all time, first watched it when i was 12, the monsters were awe inspiring and terrifying, each death was sad and held weight. I remember crying when 6 died, it soiled 'Over the Rainbow' for me for a couple years. It's a cult classic these days, I still have the dvd and tshirt in good condition.
Just something kinda interesting, the higher the number the puppet the more cleanly and better they are made, 9 having the sculpt fingers neat stitches and no loose pieces while 1 has a bobble tied at his head stitch work belts and buttons all over and his fingers are flat plates of metal
I just realized something, if 7 represents rebellion and 9 is courage, then it makes sense for them to be attracted to each other To rebel means to have courage and to be courageous means to have the will to rebel, one cannot truly exist without the other
I absolutely loved the looks of "The Machine" which can be seen here: 4:18 The steampunk vibe, the electricity erupting from its eye pice, everything about it is cool.
I watched this movie when I was eight, and loved it. I remember getting hyped for it when I saw the trailer for it. The creature designs actually inspired some of my monster designs for a comic I’m working on. So yeah this film is very dear to my heart 😊
I totally get the confusion with the character development. Here's what's given: 1 is Fear 2 is Inspiration 3 and 4 are Memory (Long Term and Short Term) 5 is Insecurity 6 is Faith 7 is Spirit 8 is Power 9 is Empathy 7 doesn't solely represent rebellion since we see 9, 5, 3, and 4 do the same. 9 doesn't solely represent courage since we see 1, 7, 6, and 8 have as well.
@Ethan Wilde Sarcastic or serious? I've been a writer for almost thirteen years, but don't have any finished stories. A lot of that writing has been me always caught in loops of just constantly improving my work through learning new techniques and then getting sidetracked with background world building. Such as completely forgetting to write for three of those years just to crash course in psychology. The first story I've ever started writing doesn't have a single concrete chapter, yet I've made about three textbooks worth of background lore, culture, biology, and societal structure, which I now have to either recycle or throw in the trash since I don't see a reason to continue with the project.
I still remember when I watched this movie when I was 8. To this day, it still holds a close place to my heart as a movie from childhood. Still being top 20 (most of the spots being taken up by Harry Potter, studio ghibli films, and Lord of The Rings). If anyone questions why I still hold it in my top 20, here's why. 1. The world of 9 is just something completely different and to this day no one has done it. I know it's a dystopia, but none really do it like 9 did and usually has more of a hopeful look to them. While 9, there was honestly a sense of dread. 2. It was actually my first time getting scared from a movie yet enamored at the same time. Even with how creepy and dreary everything was, everything had a sense of awe and wonder. Everything making you wonder what happened to make it turn into what it is now. 3. It was my first short I ever watched. After the mo ie was released to DVD, my parents got it for me and included in the DVD was the short. Of which, the short just made me wonder more about the world. 4. As you can tell with some of the movies that beat 9, I love movies that have a wonderful world to explore and it's world building is nothing but fantastic. On top of finding out more about the world, there always that sense of "If I find out more, there will be more to discover" 5. The fact of there only being the 9 who are the survivors. That really set the bar for how dangerous of a world it was. That each robot could come up to surprise you at anytime, that any if them could die at anytime. There was no certainty of good things to happen. 6. The art, the art is gorgeous. In particular the robots design and environment. The robots design were scary and moved so weirdly since, well it was a robot. They were just so fascinating to look at and watch. The environment on the other hand, it could tell a story all on its own. With the everything in decay and ruin, rust overcoming metal, and destruction being seen at all corners of the movie. All in all, yeah it is a wonderful movie and I'm happy I was able to see it
Interestingly enough when this film was being released an account for the scientist was released on Facebook (or twitter can’t remember) and he posted updates for a few months before the film was released, regarding his creations. Talk about advertisement eh?
You know even when I was younger when I watched the movie I still wonder about the time before ever thing ended and I watch the movie like a 100 times and when I got older I found this movie and paid attention to the newspapers the posters the building ever thing and I would want a movie of the war leading up to the apocalypse of 9
It was Facebook and the account is still up. According to RU-vidr 'The Theorizer' (vid-Amazing Secrets of 9) the account spent years being dormant after the movie came out but in 2016-2017 there were some new posts from the scientist.
Eh, no one questions that. What they have trouble with is when non-child targeted animation isn't just for laughs (like Seth Macfarlane's animated series and similarly premised shows or movies).
my Dad showed my Sister and I This film when We were three. It absolutely terrified us- but now this film holds a special place in my heart- and I lowkey love it-
This movie was special to me for a very specific reason. My birthday was 09-09-1999 and this movie came out on 09-09-2009, I was 9 turning 10. Best birthday movie ever xD
I remember watching this movie for the first time, I was about 11, it didn’t scare me as much as I think it should have, non the less was scary and frickin amazing and I think you did a decent job of explaining it, don’t think I Could’ve done it better myself, keep up the good work!
The short film actually made all of the characters mute (I guess? They didn't talk, and only communicated through gestures). Now that you mentioned it, it would really make 9 a better character if he was mute.
I’ve really learned to appreciate your review style. I also love when you offer your own wishes in the direction the film goes with tasteful humour inserted. I literally laughed out loud when I read “takes hit”. Keep up the good work.
I loved this movie as a kid, and I still love it to this day. The only thing I would change is I would make the Stitchpunks mute- I feel that would've made the movie stand out a bit more and also make the Stitchpunks more interesting, as they would've had to communicate and express themselves almost solely through body language and context.
My personal thing, is the whole idea of how the humans died, and the machine wanted the professors soul, is because it was incomplete, and that drives it insane to gas the human race. Then killing the small dolls, so it's own soul can be complete when the human element to its design finally is there.
@@doomslayer84 My little brother type that, stupid dude made a RU-vid account under my email and named it frost sqaud, spelled like that and posted him playing with sock puppets and I had to delete it
to be honest this movies animation is simply incredible and borderline I didn't even follow the plot when I first watched it because the action and animation we're just eye candy and a joy to look at.
@@anthonytorrissi6511 The moment, when the viewer realizes with them, that it's rising, is really well done, as the machine being able to operate outside the factory makes it seem totally invincible at that point. Paired with the music, it looks quite terrifying to me aswell.
Yes, that scene along with others like it in the movie really showcase how dangerous their environment is, and by not shying away from death the stakes are never lowered. It’s as if they’re making the audience wait for the next machine to find them. A moment of rest in a movie like this doesn’t truly give the rest everybody needs, because they either don’t last long enough or always end in peril. It’s really awesome, how they could twist the atmosphere behind a “break” like this.
I first saw this film in theaters when I was a senior in high school. My preteen sister was with me. We went to see one film, but it was canceled so we saw 9. It was rated PG-13, which surprised us for a "kids' film". The ticket holder double-checked to make sure I would be in the theater with my sister. I always wondered why until today! Still a great movie, though!
this is the first movie i remember watching. my grandma used to live in front of a video rental business where you got to buy the movies if you paid extra. i remember she bought this on dvd and we watched it together for years until the dvd player scratched the disc, then she went and bought another copy. this movie makes me cry out of nostalgia, 10/10 i love it
never met one person talking about this movie, its my favorate movie and I own it on DVD im happy to see someone talk about it for the first time. I think its under rated and a really heartfelt movie.
I watched this when I was 4, I absolutely loved it and so did my mom. It's crazy that I still remember the WHOLE PLOT. Edit: I watched the entire movie and I was right about the plot the whole time. I wish I could forget and watch it again.
I liked this movie a lot as a kid (still think it’s fantastic) but I obsessed over Coraline to the point my parents would punish me by not letting me watch it. They thought the reason I’d yell “you’re not my real mom/dad!” Was because of it but I think it was because of this stranger danger video I had seen as a kid. Don’t remember much but I remember the lady telling kids that if they’re being forcibly taken by a stranger to scream “THIS IS NOT MY MOM! THIS IS NOT MY DAD!” Fortunately I didn’t say those in public so we didn’t get in trouble with the law lmao.
I think that the reason 1 has the only character ark in the film is because he is the bad side of the scientist, and the reason 9 doesn’t have an ark at all and is just a hero cliche, is because he is the good and naive side of the scientist
I watched this movie when I was like 8 or 9. Scary stuff, nightmare fuel pretty much. PS: My grandma always managed to show me the worst movies as a kid. She rented watership down, Good will hunting and 9.
I watched the movie in awe and wonder. This apocalyptic scene was mesmerizing, the stitch punks (ragdolls) were amazing. The beast and the other monsters B.R.A.I.N. made were incredible. I found that the story is obviously how humans fell and we're cruel. The machine (B.R.A.I.N) was never meant for war, and it was innocent. It looked sad to see it's creator go, which i saw as how the thing was thinking. The stress caused it to destroy, corrupting it. I felt like it knew what the ragdolls had, and wanted it for itself. Perhaps it wanted the power, or maybe it was going to fix the planet now that it is destroyed. As the movie ended, i was pondering what could have happened. 9, 7, 4 and 3 are now the only things left alive, and the rain is bound to bring back the planet. So what happened next? We don't know, but i can guess. Truly, this film was a gem for me.
I remember my dad renting this on Netflix back in 2009-2010 (back when they would send DVDs) and I was about 8 years old watching this film. It was probably the first time encountering a dark animated movie. I remember the melancholy feeling watching this film and my dad absolutely regretting letting me watch it. We both loved it in the end but I have only watched it 3 times since then through the years
I always loved the idea of tiny people using tiny objects differently, like how a pistol or rifle would be an artillery cannon to them, or a needle may be a spear or something. It's just really fun.
I watched this movie when I was like seven or eight. I started it thinking it'd be all fun and games (despite the obviously spooky cover) and then I got traumatized. Especially by that weird thing that like sewed the characters, I still get shivers to this very day about it.
Honestly, I remember somehow having this movie as a kid, and watching it.. but I literally don't remember anything from this movie except a vague feeling I got from watching it, like three scenes that have been morphing into nothingness in my brain as the years have gone by, and just a vague understanding or knowing that this movie traumatized and scared me as a kid. That's literally it.
This was the first movie i ever saw that was considered to be a horror movie, it still sticks with me and I remember every scene like I just watched it yesterday even though it has been many many years
this film is phenomenal and remains to be in my top 5 fave films of all time. it's an incredibly powerful post apocalyptic film and has some of the best horror sci fi i've ever seen in cinema or television. i'll always love it.
Bitch my mom and dad made me as they watched 9 and she watched it again as she gave birth to me, they make me watch it every year for my birthday. Beat that
The moment you realize 9 is voiced by Frodo (or for me, Wirt from Over The Garden Wall because I'm not a Lord Of The Rings fan)- Also I love how cleverly you used a clip of the woodsman from OTGW exclaiming about the beast, knowing that Elijah Wood is both 9 and Wirt.
If you wanted 9 to be mute and be unique and represent actions speak louder than words. Did you forget about 3 and 4? They don't say anything at all throughout the movie. If 9 would've been that way it would've just been like 3 and 4. And they already represent exactly what you wanted from 9.
it's been a few years since I last watched this movie and somehow i had the memories of it being stopmotion with the humans being life action, now that would have been fantastic, because it's definitely got the right look and feel for it
Its really cool how the characters are based off of real mythology of clay or hand made dolls brought to life. Nearly every culture has their own version. Some are made of raw clay and are guardians. Others are carved into the tombs as afterlife guides and workers. Its neat how throughout time, this concept has shifted, changed, and evolved but never faded.
