This takes me back to the late 80s when Jems started showing up in music stores. I was a big Vai fan & remember spending a lot of time just staring at em hanging (out of reach) on the walls. I so wanted the one with Steve's floral curtain design on the body with the tree of life fretboard inlays...or a green one. But on my budget I had to go with a bright pink Kramer Striker, yeah!

I was genuinely heartbroken. I've never even met the man, but his death made me feel so bad. When his whole Jem collection was revisisted in Guitarist magazine last year, it made me feel so damn happy that his legacy has been respected.

steve vai is a great guy, and im sure that a lot of his musical success was not entirely playing the guitar, he rubbed shoulders with the best of them, and is one of the most inspiring people i have ever known of. hence i get the impression steve would be a fun guy to be around and probably one of the nicest guys you would ever be lucky to meet..

I'm a Luthier & was working at a NYC shop when these first came out ('87 I think). It was the signed series, they did 777 of them. He signed & numbered each of them on the back of the bodies, not just trem covers. I remember remarking "whose going to pay $800.00 for these? Little did I know huh?

Hi guys!!! I have 1 of the same year,. Dester Yelloow Now with brand new evolution PU's (i still own the original ping paf pr dimarzios). I love my yellow Jem from '95, the year that i bought from a friend of mine second or 3th hand for the amount of actual 500 euros!! (was a month of work for that time!). I try many jems in my guitarist life and no one play like mine...it's unique!!!! Many hour's, many kilometers!! Now it's part of me and i'm part of her JEM FOREVER!!!

Ive been fortunate enough to play one of these for about 10 mins, although it was the '88 edition. quite simply, the best guitar ive ever played. hands just glide across the fret board, it was a dream guitar

Mr Chapman.. funny seeing this old post and how you have evolved since this was written. Congrats to you! You make some really great guitars which l often pick up and play on when l visit Guitar Center from time to time.. they have gotten much better, more beautiful and user friendly as time passes.. Thank you for your contribution to giving others a serious quality selection of options, it is on my list of possibilities of future purchases as l know l will grab one that l absolutely won't be able to leave the store without! I would love to see "Made in U.K." on the headstock!

JEMs are the best! My fav is the Desert Yellow with the disappearing pyramid inlay like that one. My personal one is the black on black with the green vine inlay.

I have an '89 USA Custom with Necromancer's Castle painted on it. An American Made Ibanez...they moved all operations to Japan shortly after that.

Ibanez were extremely popular with their Roadstar range. Everyone played Ibanez Roadsters in the mid eighties.

Geoff it's the nicest guitar in that room,by a mile.I think the cavity plate on SV's guitar has velcro on it for quick access,also a cloth in there to stop spring vibration.

I have this exact guitar,i ordered it brand new,I think it was 1400 at the time,it really is a great guitar,the feel is perfect.I'm glad I chose to get this,it was between this and the ritchie samborra kramer with the sustain,that was a damn nice guitar too
