Everyone's talking about, Steve, Marty and Nile, but can we appreciate the true hero here? The Cameraman for having the sense and foresight to record this. Absolute legend.
@@TheEmperorInferno Yep, actually it's Marty's own private camera, he asked Jay Weinland I think to hold it. You can see C Paul Johnson in the background in most of this too btw.
makes sense since Marty came up with the original theme for CE on his way to work in the car. Marty, Mike, and Steve just absolutely killed it with their work on Halo. They're unmatched.
A piece of history and they were just vibing when they made it, one of the most iconic songs in video games was made by people just vibing to the music... Legendary!
It’s crazy how that happens in the studio. When you realize it’s THE TAKE. It gets you more amped, and things you may not be so keen on doing you just do, and it works.
@@mr5jr so. damn. sick honestly the one of the sickest examples of preparation meets opportunity meets willingness to improvise, all along with marty odonnels insane main track
They really think they can just get rid of something on the internet people care about. As soon as Martin O'donnell mentioned deleting his channel most of his videos probably got downloaded and reuploaded.
Myself as well as probably this guy and a lot of others saved them all and have them stored away. Lots of fantastic history in those videos as well as a lot of personal things that are art of their own.
I love that a good 70% of the track was just 1st playthrough improv. Iconic. Also I'm real glad these videos have been archived, Bungie are really out here punching down at people responsible for their success
@Ralof of Riverwood okay but that got resolved, then weeks later after he put that stuff back up he just up and dissapeared off the face of the earth and took everything with him, that's what im talking about
Halo will always be iconic. Not just to the kids that grew up during that time. But it’s impact on video games will never be erased I have seen this video more times than I can recall. Because we salute you halo :)
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. The fact that you have one of greatest funk guitar players on earth sitting next to one of the most legendary guitar players alive, and we get to literally watch Nile pull the solo out of Vai by waving his hands and just telling him what noises he wants to hear. This is so unbelievably good. This video belongs in the national archives. Seriously.
The section at 23:02 has always been one of my favourite parts of this composition, come back to this video every couple years when it pops up on my youtube recommended. So Fricken Good.
Imagine improvising perhaps the most iconic passage in the series, one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time. Honestly, as famous and prolific as Vai's career has been, this may be the piece of music he played with the most all time listeners. So Ill - I had never seen this before.
I love that Vai says his son is a freak because he is in the top percentiles of the game… It’s like he doesn’t even realize he is one of the greatest guitarists that’s ever lived.
The fact they not only got Steve Vai onto the soundtrack but they also go Breaking Benjamin to do one of the best Halo songs ever. This game is timeless
According to an interview with Marty most of them came to him about wanting to be on the soundtrack, all because all of them either loved playing the original Halo or had some sort of attachment to it
I love this. Huge Vai fan, but I've found it rare to see Vai feeling natural and unguarded. He's not in interview or press mode, he doesn't have his show business face on. He's there to contribute as a guest to a project. Refreshing to see this side of him.
Steve Vai used to transcribe Frank Zappa songs to paper by ear... then showed it to Zappa who then hired him because he was impressed. straight up genius.
If you were a Halo 2 fan before you heard Steve Vai, you would think his music his very "halo 2." But I think thats just because of how much of he put "himself" into this soundtrack. He was feeling it and it was feeling him.
I love the dude behind Steve at 9:11 just gets this wide grin as he hears the drop-in for the first time and has to adjust his seat. "Well fuck I gotta sit right for the rest of this shit"
All Halo fans.. I hope that Infinite brings us back together like halo 2 and halo 3 once did. Man this is chills Edit: I take this back. I take it all back. Edit edit: I take my take back back.. its doing better.. lol
@@carlweeks2399 I've had my eye on the new gameplay.. It's looking pretty promising. I love the fact that the jumps are higher and the walking/sprinting is slower. Brings me back to the classic feel rather than twitch gaming.
@@rockymountainastro1239 the halo 3 rat has returned, remastered, and reanimated, once again, as I N F I N I T E. R A T enough said, 10/10 game of the year
@@rockymountainastro1239 eh......making it feel old as shit isn't what the majority wants anymore. times change.....just like in world of warcraft. if people wanted the same experience just play master chief collection.....am i right? probably
Had I heard this before the flight I would have been very skeptical but after seeing the week long tech beta. I am 99% certain Infinite will be the game.
I cried thru most of this video. Absolutely amazing. I played so much Halo2 at a really pivotal time in my life with amazing people. The emotion that this brought out was unexpected. The music, their passion, their excitement and knowing now how absolutely iconic it is, this was a treat to watch!
I think that's a producer in the back or something? I just love his reaction when the guitarist starts killing it at 9:22 . His face is just, "YES, this is gonna be it boys" My man actually went from 6 to midnight and had to adjust lol
Bungee's fall from grace is truly depressing to see, they went from the internet's favourite game dev to a vision of hubris so strong it would make a greek god cry.
Usually what happens with human history. Way back then and even now that rule remains true. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
Still one of the most majestic things I've ever seen. To just wing it and get the main theme first try... Steve Vai is a genius. The room that night must have felt like another dimension.
@Janoy Cresva Being forced to remove videos, his twitter and his own words from the Internet because a shitty company doesn't want him to tell the truth.
@@trevorvolcom7 exactly, no one knows. Not even Marty. I am personally close friends with a higher up dude at 343i, and according to him it was because he was quote "a d|ck". Of which I winced at and personally I don't buy that.
I love everyone involved in making and sharing this. This was a total treat to watch. When he just improv'd the actual intro he stuck with around 9:30, I felt goosebumps 11:15-11:29 had such a Floyd Echoes feel to it Holy shiiiiiiiiiiii I WISH they kept 17:04-17:16, that's fire 24:00-24:22 was just incredible 24:55-25:33 was just *PERFECT* and I wish they kept it 25:53 goes metal
The only time guitar work has fitted a game even CLOSE to this well, was Mick Gordons work on the new doom games, and we all know those days are gone now too. Unbelievable work from Steve on this, just sitting there, jamming, seeing what comes out, and casually writing one of the most iconic theme songs of all time while you're at it. Absolutely nuts. Been a Vai fan for years and can't see that ever changing.
@@Dimebag0069 It's actually funny, We both grew up loving Halo, and she specifically fell in love with the music in Halo 2. One time she mentioned how much she LOOOOVED the guitar sections of the theme. I mentioned something like 'oh you know they got Steve Vai for that, and his friend Nile Rodgers got him in on it' and she was like "who?" after a long tirade about who Steve Via is... Showed her the making of i.e. this video - and that was it. It gained a whole new meaning to her and another reason to love it more.
I wish we could go back to the times where things like this would happen, when people just had fun making games, and cares about how much people would *enjoy* it, no spreadsheets or metrics required.
@@Celred The gaming companies we used to love have been shareholder first, gamer last assholes. The gaming industry has been dying for years now. We lived long enough to see our hero's become villains.
@@ReveredDead you mean like most companies in America? You know, putting shareholders before anything. It’s the fill-in the blank “_____ industrial complex” era
this is legit one of the greatest recording sessions ever I'm sure there's a lot of great ones from tons of talented artists but damn this is basically just a half hour of pure fire lol
Steve vai was pure intuition in this. They captured Vai pretty much just ouitlining the mode the theme is in. like master chief entering a new world and feeling the ground. ITs pure intuition and they captured it. AS much as I love the writing that feeling the sonic ground Mr vai did by playing was not calculated it was just feels natural
It’s so genius to just have him freestyle over the theme first. Those little things like that long whammy bar to ramp up in the beginning are what make the song so memorable
15:34 I feel like you have to really be into music to understand their movement here. These two are really feeling the music and it's beyond comprehension. Emotion was poured into the making of this song and that's what makes it so iconic and special. I'm just in disbelief that Vai really nailed the song on the first take, the most legendary part of that song. One more thing, if you listen to a song he made(for the love of god, made in 1990) it really captured this sound towards the end of that song. Crazy to think that was created before this. Truly two amazing pieces and Vai is just an all out amazing guitarist. Best collab in gaming history.
Yeah, when you hear him warming up you can hear him practicing licks and scales that resemble his other songs. But when he goes to play the Halo theme it's that same skill and experience but with a whole new vibe to it. The amount of practice it took to get to this level is unfathomable
How does it get more badass then this? The most recognized video game theme of all time, along with being recognized as the "FPS National Anthem".absolutely breathtaking.
So the guitar riff was literally freestyled, not written...I don't know his name but the brotha in the hat who said "Let's just vibe and see how it feels" is a genius, made a phenomenal decision right there, and it was caught on video. Subhan'Allah
@@Jamplays592 I'm not sure how "professionals" do it, but I'm some level of guitarist and a great deal of my writing is basically just vibing and trying to remember what parts I liked. There's obviously an amount of skill and intrinsic understanding of the kind of music you're trying to make that's required to be able to reliably vibe something good, but yeah, I think a good chunk of great music is basically a sum of a few different vibing sessions that get all their best parts put together.
Wow this always blows my mind! He got the entire idea and every part just from the first play through vibing it on the spot! They took all of that first take and used it wow!!!!!
from min 9 on I just feel Goosebumps , cant believe he naile than at his first try, there are good musicians, great musicians and then prodigies like Steve Vai, this guy is a musical genius I cant believe some can have so much raw talent
Not just nail it but then they used those improv recordings in the song too, it sounds like. It doesn't just sound like him playing the same riffs, it sounds like the same recording.
I was like Michael Scott finding out Toby was back when I heard this rift, if you think it's good sober try smoking dope and listen to that rift again.
@@HerrenGamingNews I cant Exactly remember mate, but I probably was high AF listening to this, either way its so dope how this legendary music came to be.
The most replayed part is at 9 minutes when he finally gets in the zone of Halo. Where the masterpiece begins and you feel like you’re in the old Xbox on the top of a mountain. Sounded like an old Nintendo game starting up just so cool.
I can't tell you enough how happy I am that Marty sorted that out and reuploaded this gem some hours ago, I just found out. When he first shared this, I couldn't believe what I was watching, happy tears and everything, so it was a real bummer when he had to took it down... but then you saved the day. Thank you for keeping it alive all this time for us!
Steve Vai is just absolutely incredible guitar player he doesn't get much credit he has worked with Joe Satriani who was in fact his guitar student who is also an unbelievable guitar play, Frank Zappa, Whitesnake, Devin Townsend list is pretty huge, even his solo material is impressive, he did 2 brilliant versions of this song
