Totally agree with it. That means even if you were not a guitarlist you might be able to get something from this and bring it into what you do apart from music.

I borrowed the cd from a library and copied it to a cassette. I didn't get his music at first, but kept listening to it, because it was still interesting and alien. And after a while I got it.. I guess my ear got used to the lydian sound, haha!

I remember buying Passion & Warfare on CD on the day of release. I had picked up Flexable with the bonus 'Flexable Left-overs' on import CD (I still have the import sticker on the case) a year or so before Passion & Warfare and really got into Steve Vai after hearing David Lee Roth's Yankee Rose... Damn I am OLD!!! :D

One of the most important things I've learned from Steve is that while you're creating something, you have to follow your own creative inspiration and trust it completely. You can always analyze what you've done after you finish, but if you allow analysis and self-criticism while you're creating, you're more likely to get frustrated and give up. If you do manage to push through, whatever you make will be a less pure expression of your own creativity. Separating creativity from analysis and judgement has made it much easier for me to finish things instead of getting stuck in the middle. They don't all turn out good, but some of them do, and that's much better than not finishing anything at all.

Steve Vai has a Big Heart when He plays and when He doesn't . Not just a technician about "how many things you can do on the guitar", he plays with FEELING, loads of that!!!! He has A TOUCH. He LOVES melody, he SAID, he ALWAYS says that!! He just creates new melodic weird lunar lines of notes. And this makes a huge difference from being just a "shredder". He is not, let's make it clear! He is a VERY BIGHEARTED GUY, AN EXPERIMENTAL AND A VERY MELODIC MUSICIAN .

I imagine - but may be wrong - it may be a little bit hard sometime for those guys (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Y.Malmsteen, and many other guitar heroes) to find themselves in a world when now there is thousands of people who can play classics like "For The Love of God" or other classic songs at the same technical level or better then Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, or others guitar heroes. But a thing to remember is, no matter how good copy is, it is a copy still. We love you guys for what you did for us! For making so many songs which are now classic and inspiration to millions of people around the world.

I wish Steve wouldn't have been interrupted when he was going down this line...I've always told my students. You can play ANYTHING you want if you learn it in small bites, very slow and flawlessly to the metronome and then very slowly speeding it up, and only speeding it up once you have it 100% accurate to the point that you could play it in your sleep at that speed, no matter how slow it needs to be for that condition to be true. If you follow that, to a metronome that is, the speed will come naturally, and you can play anything.

My Lord can Steve ramble lol, he was talking about learning these difficult passages of Z music.. Now, i am in learning the "Inca Roads" with lots of arpeggios flying...Difficult stuff... Then Steve says "As with something as the Zappa stuff i would visualize my pla " I was like cool that might help me with this stuff, yea visualize thats it..... But then, nothing. Now what i should visualize ??? Me playing with Zappa ?? Me playing in my home ?? My guitar neck ?? My pick angle ??WHAT ???? "Fine tune the picture you can be anything you want".. Great After 4 minutes of this "discipline" "Unique gift is" talk i still do not know how that helps learning those difficult passages.

In another interview he elaborated even more. He said that song (For The Love Of God) came to him in a period of high spirituality mindedness, and he had just completed a ten day's fasting. Yes: Ten was the number that he mentioned!
@TheVirginianRambler
@TheVirginianRambler 7 лет назад
Jean Kabeya he also recorded it on day 6 of another ten day fast
@StevenSiroVai1
@StevenSiroVai1 4 года назад
Actually, The main melody flowed out of me many years ago and sat on the shelf. When it came time to record the guitar part perhaps 5-10 years later, I was on the 5th day of a 10 day fast. Back then I used to fast for 10 days twice a year. These days usually only 5 days a year. It can create altered states and that's what I was looking for. But if you are interested in this kind of thing I highly recommend experimenting with one day a week for 6 months or so. I believe, if done properly, it can not only have mental benefits, but physical as well.
@edwardcabras

I was loving seeing the Vai v Satriani debate.... Some National Guitar Institute named Shawn Lane the greatest guitarist ever... The thing is everyone has their own taste. I always say there are 2 kinds of music.... good and bad, and everyone's good and bad is different!!! To me, and he may not be the best player ever but to me he is my favorite of all, with his technique and range, from full-on Metal to Classical and Jazz and Blues, is Rik Emmett. I discovered Triumph in 1984 and decided then I was going to play guitar and that I have..... ever since! Vai V Satch? I tend to Satriani, a lot because he's more "accessible" to me but I LOVE both.

as Stephen Covey says (me referencing him), Steve Vai says: you become what you think about and if you want to improve yourself you have to hear yourself in your own minds-ears and your own minds-eyes and actually see yourself doing something that you are incapable of doing, try it, and find tune the picture and could be anything you want!!!!! ooooooooohhhhhhhh master of guitar masters

No doubt one of the most technically proficient guitarists around. However, his real strength is composition. He has written, and performed his music with major symphonic orchestras in Europe. To be able to write music in all four clefs, bass, treble, tenor, and alto, as well as for percussion, is no mean feat. He’s also able to conduct a full symphonic orchestra.
@rlm4471
@rlm4471 5 месяцев назад
Agreed. All the of the most famous guitarists are really great composers. We love Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, and their peers for their songs first. Their playing is great, but it would mean nothing outside of a compelling piece of music.
