In this exclusive interview Guitar Legend, Steve Vai tells the story about writing Yankee Rose with electric frontman David Lee Roth from his platinum solo debut album from 1986. DLR left Van Halen earlier, desiring to create his own way, he connected with Steve Vai and created some timeless rock, here is the story of Yankee Rose, the first single from the album. It went to #16 on the hot 100.

I'm 52 years old watching the years slipping away and I remember everything about that time. I loved the music, the vibe and everything about the 80s. I miss that time period so much and wish I could go back and do it all over again.

I grew up in the 80s and was an avid guitar player who idolized Satriani and Eddie but never gave Vai his due. Later in life, watching these interviews, I'm struck by how nice and humble he is, like Satch. Really makes idolizing them that much easier.

Steve is a very generous and great person. He makes time for people. I remember meeting him at an after party show and there was a guy there that brought Steve a recording of his music. Steve actually took the time to give him notes, critiques, compliments, suggestions. My cousin and I, who both play guitar, were amazed! Think about it. He had a full day already. Press, meet and greets, planning, sound check, then a two hour show, and after all that, still made the time to give this person all of his attention for what seemed like 10-15 minutes straight. That is a class act individual.

@@roaringlion1 It was in an interview from back in the day and Vai was very polite and professional about it, but it came down to David Lee Roth was "always on" and was an intense and demanding guy from an image and performance point of view. He was always looking for the "next hook" and that can be exhausting after a while. If you ever watch an interview with Roth from back then, it's like a chihuahua on cocaine. His mind was always bouncing from joke to idea to poem to bumper sticker quotes. That's fun being around that in doses, but it drains people after a couple years.

@@roaringlion1 Roth is the same “ROCK STAR” off stage that he is on stage, and that’s impossible to live with. We loved Appetite For Destruction partly because of Axl’s raw delivery which seemed to be fueling off anger... only to find out it truly WAS anger and it was destroying him from inside. Nirvana’s songs about depression and despair all of a sudden became REAL when Cobain ended his own life. All great artists are convincing during their performances, but some artists aren’t ‘performing’ at all; they really ARE what they seem to be.

This was one of the greatest all time rock line ups. I saw them play live on the Eat em and Smile tour on Long Island Nassau Coliseum and it was epic in all sense of the word. David Lee Roth was at the top of his game. This band was so on point and everyone in that band was at the top of their games as well. Steve Vai killed it. He is not only one of the best rock guitarist on the planet but man can he put on a performance. Billy Sheehan was the same way. You literally didn’t know who to look at cause they were all front men. It’s was on 11. One of the best rock shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of them. What a party!!!!

To this day...The DLR 1986 Tour was the best concert I've ever been to (Brendan Byrne Arena -Long Island NY)...and I've been to many rock concerts from mid 70s to the present.

Dave riding the giant surfboard over the sold out coliseum on the Skyscraper tour was awesome! Sure am glad I grew up when I did. Kids nowadays have no idea what real music is, as everything these days is autotunes, and overproduced. Yup, sure am glad my childhood was spent listening to the greatness of VH, and so many other awesome and super talented bands. Like them or not, they were really playing their instruments, not just grabbing samples like they do today. Thank you Eddie, Dave, and of course Steve Vai for setting the bar so high. No decade comes close to the greatness of the 80's, so much talent, so much great music! Man, those were the days! RIP Eddie, the best to ever pick up a guitar 🎸!

I STILL remember when that song/record came out, if memory serves Yankee Rose was released right around July 4th 1986 and it ROCKED!. That song came ripping out of the speakers for the rest of that summer, fun times.

great song. Kind of sad too.... It is powerful composition but not enough soul. Its just a long composition highlighting his talents however, my opinion is the DLR albums with Vai are more upbeat songs and plus billy sheehan is playing everything Vai is. And greg on drum doing those beats.... WOW So for me its better than long soloing that makes a person cry. I prefer upbeats. ☝

Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, California Girls, Just a Gigolo, Yankee Rose, Going Crazy, Just Like Paradise.....AMAZING CATALOG! I was SO bummed when Roth and VH split....but then Eat Em and Smile came out and I saw endless, ENDLESS possibilities. The band was MORE than able to play note for note with the guys from VH so I saw a bright future for David Lee Roth and the boys, but it never really came to be. I love the whole Eat Em and Smile album, bought it when it was released and still listen to it today with Shyboy and Yankee Rose being total stand outs. Great release and one that dozens t get enough cred for was it was and is.

This was a freaking awesome breakdown. I was there to buy the album the day it came out. I was told I had to wait a month to buy the CD because back then they didn't come out right away. Awesome, I was just spinning Roth's Skyscraper vinyl, yesterday, to test out a vintage Pioneer turntable that I picked up. Seeing Steve Vai in Crossroads was a big influence on me to pick up guitar. Vai's work with Roth is definitely, underrated.

Man, I’d like to see a DLR reunion tour of the Eat’em and Smile lineup. I heard that they were suppose to or did do a little gig here in LA at Lucky Strikes bowling alley, which sounds so David Lee Roth to do. But I think it got canceled last minute. I’m not sure about that...Yankee Rose is still one of my favorite songs. What a fun as song.

The Vai's Guitar style Is Amazing! Talking guitars Is funny staff but hard to play. My favorite Vai's solo in DLR band Is Ladies night in Buffalo! It blows me away! 20 years ago I ranked 7th in a "play with Steve Vai" Guitar staff, I was happy to see him live and make a photo with him! High octane Guitar staff my friend! Thank U 4 the Video!

Another good solo is "hot dog and shake" from Skyscraper album, the long screaming bending is very hard to do but very rock attitude oriented e then Vai starts with armonized sequenze of notes, maybe ain't the best song of the album, ma the solo is a little masterpiece (fro me of course!)

Got to see them on that tour at the L.A. Forum, one of the best shows ever and I'm the old fart that's seen them all 🤣 What a great rock band. Over the top playing, incredible stage presence/showmanship and the best frontman in the business! They were all having great time! 80's arena rock...nothing in live music will ever come close to matching that level of energy👍

Absolutely LOVED that song when it was released.. as a young teen guitarist myself at the time THIS song was pure GOLD 🎸. This song was when I discovered Steve Vai and was a super fan from then on and learned alot of playing from watching Steve from there on.. was just introducing Steve to my boys again today. Steve is the GOAT of guitarists. And I've followed then all 😎👍

I was a HUGE VH fan and I remember when Dave left VH and I thought, "who could he ever get to play the guitar as good as Eddie." Then I read in a magazine the name Steve Vai. Just before the album came out I bought a magazine that had a flexible record included which had Steve Vai playing "Flexible" I was sold right then and there.

I was a teen when Yankee Rose was top-40. The combination of Steve on guitar and Billy on bass is what really impressed me with the song. Steve and Billy are still two of my all time favorite guitar and bass players. The first time I saw Steve was in a movie called Crossroads with Ralph Macchio as a wannabe "bluesman". Steve was so amazing. 💖💖💖💖💖 I don't know how many times I watched that movie because of him.

I love watching Steve Vai play. He just made it look so easy and sexy as hell! I was probably the only person rooting for him to win against the Karate Kid in Crossroads!

I first heard Yankee Rose when I was in elementary school, and have loved it every since. I think that Steve’s guitar solo and the banter back and forth with David at the beginning of the song was an excellent move that completely paid off. Very Roth like with the doing things out of the box. That makes it more refreshing not so cookie cuterish if you will. Definitely two of the greats.

Wow! Steve Vai...this man musically can do no wrong In MY eyes. One of the very few. I've been around awhile, pushing 60, and he has not disappointed me yet! 😊

DLR 's band for this album is legendary: absolutely incredible stuff-when I heard it the first time it blew me away .In the video for this song Professors Vai and Sheehan were fantastic, the drummer was so good, he could have probably played upside-down, while Dave-sensei was doing his onstage music dojo moves.Nobody does stuff like this anymore.

I remember way back when VH 5150 and Eat Em And Smile came out - my local radio station (105.7 WAPL) played the albums back to back with VH first. WAPL was having kind of a contest to see who the fans thought had a better record. I just loved 5150, but after hearing Dave's album, I got real nervous. I knew who Steve Vai was, but I just hate Ibanez guitars (little did I know) and thought " there is no WAY someone that lays an Ibanez can beat the almighty VH". After hearing Dave's album, I got really scared that he was right all along. Eat'em And Smile is still one of my fav 80's albums however.

I had the pleasure to meet and talk with Steve Vai for almost an hour in 2023 on the 2nd leg of his Inviolate tour. There were other people there but I felt a little guilty because he spent most of the time taking with me despite being sure the handful of others there were involved. Just a phenomenal musician, composer and humble person. Eat 'em and Smile was a great album with a powerhouse of performers. Steve remains more than viable and FlexABLE (pun intended) after all these years with his innate musicality and positive attitude. Great dude still out on the road for his fans and the music. Thanks also @ProfessorofRock for the great content. Love your stuff on The Cure as well. Covering the full spectrum of rock and roll.

Something I like about Mr. Vai interviews is his attention to details he always remember with almost photographic memory all the moments in his life and career, and He genuinely complements all musicians he has worked with.

I did a radio show in the 80s in California at KSAK at Mt San Antonio Community college. Yankee Rose was the opening song for my show every Friday and Saturday nights. That song got me so fucking hyped for the show that it was hard to come down afterwards. Love that song and always will.

This was “artistic” visual glamour. The music was hard rock perfection. People with musical ears heard the difference, others lumped it together with over the top glam.

Maaan, brings back memories. I saw the Eat ‘Em Tour at Maple leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada, Cinderella opened for them with their debut album “Night Songs”. Still my favorite concert ever and I still have the ticket stub and my tour program.
