As I was watching this interview, I couldn’t help but imagine this quartet recording and playing live together: Steve Vai - Guitar Kip Winger - Bass and Vocals Devin Townsend - Guitar and Vocals Terry Bozzio - Drums
Two gentlemen that are beyond great musicians but geniuses of musical composition and interpretation. Pure genius! It is amazing to have living Beethovens, Mozarts, and others in our time. We are blessed by you both!
@@morbidmanmusic Hello, certainly not a Mozart or Beethoven and I would never profess to be anything close but judging from your two comments on this video thread it seems you completely dismiss the point of my approach (which is totally fine with me), but as a courtesy to you I'm sending this link of my classic for you to listen to (hopefully with an open mind) so as to better understand where I'm coming from. In any case, thanks for watch and commenting. To me everyones opinion is valid. open.spotify.com/album/5FfCSgyeAohZAeTqAGZCeN?si=thZOOCyoRAOLpvsG8_byeQ
@@KipWingerTV this is great. And there's no point in comparing. I've noticed you were interested in Steve's approach to combining a rock band and an orchestra. Are you familiar with Van Dyke Parks's work in Silverchair's Diorama and Young Modern? Although not "composed for an orchestra + band" per se, rather than "orchestrally embellished", I believe it would inspire you. Lots of good stuff in there. Great conversation, cheers.
Kip and Steve are two great musicians and two great composers to me. Thank you for the wonderful time. Thank you Kip, thank you Steve. Best of luck to you two in the future!
Who would come up with a one note FOR 17 MINITES ,,,,MR.VAI. Steve you are such an inspiration,,,Also Kip your songwriting is AWESOME the album PULL, ever song on that album is great,,,saw your band perform it also, great show. THANK YOU STEVE / KIP YOU GUYS ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITE MUSICIANS. - RJ.
Greetings Kip and thank you for making time to engage in thought and conversation about the subject of Music with none other than Steve Vai! A couple of observations from my end on the subject. One of my fave quotes is: "Meditation on the Word of God is the highest form of worship." For me at least, as long as I continue reading my Holy Bible, I continue to get revelations and new ideas for what to write and create, which I largely execute in the form of both melody and lyrics. It is rare that I ever end up with a poem, or instrumental, but I have those as well. It makes everything so much easier than not knowing where the source of my creativity is birthed from. Short version: It comes from the One who made the universe and put into motion Audible Light to support His intelligent designs. Another, is that finding my quiet place can be difficult sometimes, but again - I can when I ask God to help me quiet my mind, so I can experience His peace. For those who struggle to experience what peace is, one way to complete an exercise anyone can. First make the statement, preferably out loud: God, I belong to you! And, if needed repeat it as much as is needed. Don't be in any particular hurry, just be still and wait on His response. I and others have done this, and every time someone new has, it is nothing short of amazing! You may literally want to take notes afterward. In our society it can be really hard to turn our thoughts off, but quiet is just the absence of noise or our own thoughts.Peace is a absolutely achievable part of that process. All the best, Lee Bond II singer and songwriter of the band Hekia, an abbreviation for HE knows it all!
This was awesome Kip! Love it. Love the whole idea about what you put out into the universe is what you get back. I'm glad Steve mentioned that about negative energies we put out like worry and fear. It's so true. I needed that reminder!! Thanks for this and looking forward to part 2!
Being a professional drummer for many moons I have so much respect and admiration for real musicians like Kip and Steve. Their music is awesome. So much stuff on the radio today is synthetic garbage not music.
Really enjoyed watching Kip asking intelligent, and inspiring questions!! Steve is as always, forever will live on through his personallity and dream-esque music!!!
Both of these great human beings conveyed to me a lot through their music. It’s really awesome to realize that both are connected to the Akashic Records. I have a debt of gratitude to Steve for introducing this Realm in my life. Thank you Master!
What a delightful surprise! Pure fun to sit in on a conversation with Kip and Steve tripping on, of all things, composition!!! Enjoyed that endlessly! Two massive thumbs up for that.
Before ever having known that your piece was entitled Still Small Voice your description of requisitioning the universe for your needs reminded me of the first, and likely most successful, time that I performed that same task. It was for the purpose of confirming the existence of God to a friend and atheist. The confirmation was obtained in a dream under hypnopompic paralysis and yet a still small voice urged that I understand that my request was in vain and thusly only half fulfilled but to the extent that it served as proof to the skeptic. The way you describe it as a "download that sort of hits you" is an amazing confirmation of experience. Thank you for risking ridicule to share the process of obtaining enlightenment.
Fantastik conv. I've always enjoyed Steve's Philosophies on life, music and spirituality. Your angle on the interview is a refreshing twist on the normal convos we get. Putting the energy out and getting the energy back is a deep spiritual concept and its pretty cool to see two big musical geniuses talking about that. Great interviews. I've always been inspired by your musical journey and talent and by your peaceful thoughtful personality. Much different than the 'rocker' personae that MTV creates as an image. Very cool.
This is EXACTLY what I was supposed to see & hear today!💯 I literally had a Vision for a new Project but havent even really sat down to write it all out yet. I can see and sorta hear the concept but it isnt TIME yet. Also: the asking the Universe is so important- I find faith and good karma bring so much into the ability to take on these tasks
Two of the most brilliant musicians out there, having an amazing conversation. Been looking forward to this! I am very intrigued not only to hear the next two parts but also to see who else Mr. Winger interviews.
I had to subscribe after this. Not sure if I have watched a more inspirational interview. One that has these high level questions that open a CONVERSATION not just answers. Nice job Kip! So much of this transfers to the visually creative world, and this inspires me.
As a prog rock guitarist who has always had this wish and calling of composing classical pieces despite living in a small country...this is inspiring to say the least. Enourmous respect for you Kip and Steve of course.
What a pleasure. Just discovered your channel Kip, thanks for giving us the opportunity to learn more about your music and music in general. And Vai, fascinating discussion between you two.
These guys are magicians and they can create music beyond our Imagination. They should spend more time together, writing together. I'm sure they will enjoy it a lot, and we will have a new legendary musical language.
Kip, so happy to see this. Long time fan of both of you, and this ignores the usual cliches and gets deep into some proper thought processes about compositional concepts. Great to see an interview away from the norms and delving into really interesting ideas of what give us what we love about your work. Great stuff. Huge thanks, Karl
Thankyou Kip for posting this- I really enjoyed it! So great to see two of my favourite rock musicians turning towards the classical side. Having been raised a classical musician (with a father who’s a classical composer),majored performance on oboe, cor-anglais and violin, now turned rock guitar player- I could listen to you both talk composition all day. Perhaps one of you will write an oboe concerto one day!! I can always hope😉 This was so interesting and I can’t wait to hear more of your compositions and more of this type of content!
Really enjoyed the direction of your questions! Great concepts-the infinite creation of music, "seeing" the music, dreaming the tunes, putting your requests out to the universe, melody never being boring, stilling your mind in the evening to expand your universe in composing. Interesting how he originally "got" music & his description of realizing all the colors at his disposal. I just discovered an amazing poem by Robert Frost that I related it to immediately, "The Aim was Song". Beautiful, it's basically about the wind learning that it was always meant to be song. Great stuff, thank you!
Both of YOU TWO have crossed my Path. You both helped me . Today It is nice to putt around in your wake, Same Water, Different Boats, HAIR HELPS with The downloads. Thanks for the kick. You do my heart good.
Superb! Meeting of great musicians and awesome discussion! Looking forward to the next parts! I’ve been to a Vai experience before a show and I can verify that Steve is very consistent in what he practices and preaches. A lot of the stuff esp with parameters etc he talked a lot about that. Fascinating stuff
I'm loving these Conversations, Kip! You are so talented. I just worked out tonight to your new album "Seven" and it's my favorite music right now. I hope you live forever to keep expanding your musical universe for all of us who are blessed to listen.
