They both played magnificent solos that were magnificently different from one another. I am more than certain that both guitars were hospitalized after their respective beatings.
Tony used to live in Sebastopol , ca and rented a loft from my best friends Mom... He was insane on guitar, but his piano skills are also unreal... pure genius indeed.
Macalpine is such an amazing shredder, powerful solo! Steve Vai is a colossal genius that changed forever the world of the electric guitar, the minute he starts jamming he turns this tune into a trademark Vai composition, slowly building off chorus after chorus until both bassist & drummer are in a musical frenzy, all in sync and filled with inspiration and enthusiasm! Great video, can’t wait to see Part 2.
HA HA. I just had my boys watch half hour of Vai and VanHalen. Now i'm sending them to bed... they're too pumped to sleep... evil daddy. Great frickin' solos here.
Is 2018 and Vai is already way past his peak. Macalpine is still playing and recording searching for new grounds and experiences. Vai is a great player with a guitar. Tony is the very spirit of the guitar.
sergio muñoz Tony MacAlpine's "Maximum Security" recording said it all. Not much (if anything) can top that IMO. Nothing that Vai OR Satriani has done can come close to it. I don't even think anything Yngwie has done can beat it.
Absolutely Tony is better in term of technical skill than Vai, he even expert in keyboard, but i think Vai is commercial guitarist and he plays not to win or compete, but to give some fun with good concept of the show and earn much money that's why he hired Tony although he knew Tony would defeat him
sergio muñoz there is no way that Tony is better guitarist . Tony cannot leave a person feeling like they can't breath. Vai is breathtaking. It's not a competition but the things Vai does is almost not human . Vai can play anything Tony can play but Tony cannot play everything Vai can play..
not true rez, tony much fast and best phrasing, vai best sound and effects, vai is a guitarrist for all people, tony only for guitarrist and musicians....
Tony MacAlpine is way better. At least there is more melody in what he is doing. Vai is just a monky jumping around not knowing that music is not atonal to everyone.
They couldn't, and I think it was all decided from the start. They wanted someone who was sort of on the same level as Portnoy. Virgil is light years ahead of both.
Can only comment on this as seen Steve V live. Tears of Sahara takes me to a place that nothing else has. It's all subjective. Like saying Mac D is better than burger king 😎😎
I remember my friend from high school, an up and coming musician himself with Tony Macalpine's first album. His hair was much longer then. Wow! What a time and what an era. I miss those times.
I love the team Vai vs team tmac camps. Both are monsters. I'd say tony is the better shredder. Vai probably more imaginative with creating soundscapes. He pulling a lot of tricks. I hear some EVH, but also Tom morello and even wes borland. Yeah, I'm serious with the last two. If you wanted a straight up shred fest. No parlor tricks. Tony probably comes out on top.
Those saying macalpine is better than vai need to clean their ears,they both are doing amazing solos but vai plays his own style and macalpine plays a style thats overused by other great guitar players,still great solos though
Seriously? I don't know any better? buddy, I've forgotten more about music than you'll ever learn. Tony Macalpine knows music inside and out..from Bach all the way to modern shredding, and it shows in his playing. If you think his playing is cliche, then that just shows how little you know. Like I said, Vai is a tremendous player, but he's more of a practiced entertainer than a true musical virtuoso.
buffff, i can see a lot of diferent aspects...., vai is better in all stles of guitar, vai is a guitarrist for all people, people dont play, rock people and also players, mcalpine is more for only guitarrist or other musicians can understand best his playing...., i can see here wich vai have a reputation and want to be the best and tony only play and respect more the other, because he works for the other....mcalpine if want can put very hard the fight to vai...., vai is a shred guitarrist more in effects and sound, mcalpine is more fast and have vest and intrincate phrasing, vai have best sound and tone, of course vai is very fast but not like tony, probably vai is best guitarrist because is more polivalent but macalpine is very near in that and is better mussician than vai, a lot of people here says wich vai hace his own distintive sound and style..., for one side is true but for other side i thing this is not true because is a mix of zappa thing with the guitar touch of beck, because is a guitarrist based in effects, i thing is not realy his own propiety....., of course for one dont know really about music inmediantly recognice is vai, this person can recognice macalpine very fast like vai, one person know about music recognice macalpine as well, for me vai loose his horiginallity a lot of years ago, he want to be like zappa and this is impossible, vai bored me a lot for years, is now in a composition and in musicallity abad imitator of zappa, dont have the music knowledge of zappa and he want to try to use the rest musicians in his band like an orchestra musicians like zappa without exit, for me vai is still in the same point of a lot years ago, for other part mcalpine work in diferent things, in ones best than others but always good and work with ones of the most respected musicians in electric music, people in fussion like chambers and this bassplayer, i think wich vai likes to be a rockstar with a lot of pose and pretencious and tony is more in a normal person is a musician with a lot of humility and like to play and learn with people is best than him..., for me tony is more real and always in contact motion musician, sincerenly ilike more the discography of tony but i love vai, the two supper creativity but i thing vai for years is stoped, tony non stop without frontiers...., is my point of view, vai best guitarrist, tony best musician, and dont forget wich can play best piano than rudess, not keyboard, piano... since he is a child...., in my opinion, macalpine forever!!!!!!!!!!!
