Eric clapton said that winwood was possibly the most talented and unappreciated musicians of our time and that he was blessed having shared the stage with him. THATS SOME COMPLIMENT
He and Jack Bruce are the most Underrated all time. Jack Bruce wrote all those Cream songs on a Stool in his Apartment in London on an Upright Bass. Monster Voice.
dont want to trash talk todays music... the thing is nowadays no musician is able to bring me to tears like this, uncontrollable tears of all the emotions that i feel at the same time listening to this music
He's been doing it all since the Spencer Davis Group days when he was the ripe old age of 15 or so. I think he's my age, 75, with a very distinguished musical following. He music is part of the soundtrack to my life.
Saw him with Traffic at Winterland in SF. I will never forget that concert, and I saw many there. It started in the dark, with random notes being played by the band. Then, somehow the notes gradually morphed into the beginning of Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Stevie had a way of playing that was so melodic. His notes were few, but put together so beautifully. You didn’t want the song to stop! We do not see talent like that today.
Michael Guidera - I've followed Steve W. my entire adult life from age 24 to now ( just turned 77 ). All of his work is superlative, and on top of that he seems like a very nice guy. Put him and Clapton on a stage together and it's like ice cream and cake - both are delicious, but it's hard to say which is better.
Loved reading the comments. NEIL fans. Honestly... Been picking for 40 plus years...one third of my songs are NEil. My wife of 45 years... Says I never evolved in my music ( Allman Bros. Tucker..Daniels ..Carlos anything Dickie/Duane..B.B. Rory. Or any Blues picker. TOY..Caldwell. SKYNARD...TEN YEARS AFTER. GOT CARRIED AWAY. PART OF MY REPETUAR.
Steve Winwood can sing anything and sound great! Cream takes me back to the old days when tickets only cost $15 and get great floor seats. I'm 66 now in 2024 and listening to this music takes me back many years and never gets old. That's the beauty of Rock and Roll. It's memorizing.
Couldn't agree with you more, been a BRUMMIE, myself he's a humble man, and never looks for recognition, respected by all true musicians and possibly the most talented out of the bunch, JACK BRUCE, CLAPTON, GINGER BAKER, JEFF BECK, as the man was a fantastic piano player. ONLY MY OWN OPINION, 👍👍👍
you're right man...have you seen him in front of the fireplace doing can't find my way home acoustic? there you can also just see the pure talent. I did however notice he tuned his guitar a full step down for that 'cause maybe his voice is a tiny bit lower 'cause of aging vocal chords or something...
Agreed 100%!!! I’ve watched it so many times I lost count now. I first heard this song at the beginning of Avengers Endgame and I’ve been watching this over and over again since then.
One of the most recognizable voices in R&R. What blew me away was how accomplished he is on guitar. I knew he was a superb keyboardist; had no idea he shredded on guitar. Just blown away.
Cycling one day last year around where I live here in the UK, I came across these two guys leaning on a gate looking at some land chatting away. Getting closer I recognised one of them to be the one and only Stevie Winwood. Knowing he lived in this area, I guessed this must be part of his land and he was probably discussing farm business. As I passed I nodded and said, "Morning Mr Winwood, lovely land almost a fantasy" and gave a wink! He looked up but said nothing, just nodded and grinned........Made my day.
He’s the guy Hendrix said could hang with him. A true prodigy. Think of how old he was when he fronted for The Spencer Davis Group. Truly under rated musician and vocalist.
Steve Winwood is a rare kind of musician, in a class like very very few. Talented, with a gifted voice and very versatile at different instruments, and most importantly a big soul very low in ego. one of the greatest ever in the world of rock.
Folks, this is music history, original artistry, from the most golden era in creative modern music. Cool that it’s being recreated by the original artists. Winwood plays every instrument like a master. And there’s the voice....
Steve Winwood has the ability to transport you to places within yourself. He paints a picture for your soul to follow and feel good. I have always loved Steve Winwood's music. It takes me back to a better time, more simple and innocent. Rock On Steve!
Well put Mr Davison ,I couldn’t agree more, your comments really hit home with me, and something that I commented on before I never realized what a great guitarist Steve is until I seen this video🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
I took some of my waiters & waitresses to see Traffic at an Amphitheater in B'ham, Al. They were young. Had no idea who Traffic was. I think in 85'. They came back told everyone who didn't go that they missed the most amazing music they had ever heard. Great memories!
A simple lyric, but Winwood's voice, still as astounding as 40 years ago, takes it to an immortal place. There's just never been a voice in rock to match this guy.
He’s so good, he’s unrateable! Loved his performance at the recent coronation-still has the chops. Folks, we are truly blessed he’s still with us! ❤😇🎶 5:38
If it doesn't make the hair on the neck stand up, ease on a smooth grin, make the head nod in time, and occasionally invoke a single tear of depth in connection... it ain't worth listening to.
God you can see, hear and feel the Clapton influence in those licks. Goosebumps. Overused yes, maybe but no less and definitely a genius. Blind Faith, Traffic, solo. 60’s, 70’sand 80’s. Literally the soundtrack of my life. Legend...
I came to speak of SW's influence on me. ( & I've spent my life as a Concert Pianist! ) Instead, the picture you've painted is more beautiful than any words I can find! Thank You
Lord, I hate to say it but those licks ain’t Clapton they go much farther back then you think hell Clapton licks ain’t Clapton and he’ll tell u that himself. All these notes have already been played.
What memories this brings back , I remember the first time I heard Steve sing this and he is as amazing to this 65 year old as he was to my 15 year old ears.
I know I'm 65 black male who thanks Stevie for music that's puts you in a grove to just sit back smoke a joint and let the music take you to another place! 10-3-21 at 3:45 pm !
This is great for sure, but for me Traffic at the Santa Monica, CA Civic Center 2/21/72 is the definitive live version - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pSQ1akE2CcM.html
Both drummers are just rockin’ out, the bass player is is lookin’ at Steve like “ok you got it,” & the background singers are just smiling & clapping for everyone…fuckin’ love it!
I think he's a great example of someone who plays "within himself" if you will. He's obviously very talented, but he seems less impressed with amazing licks and more about creating a feeling, a solo, a build of emotions and feelings and head shaking and damn! Awesome stuff.
Theres an original video of this from WAYYYY back in the VERY early 70s thats just phenomenal. Stevie looks like he's trippin balls big time, Jim Capaldi is in another solar system with his Tambourine. He looks like he's also trippin so hard he almost looks like he's having an epileptic fit while holding said Tambourine 😂😂😂 Just do a search its easy to find. But even back then, Stevie was a true Master of all the crafts he's gifted us with. Well worth the search 👍✌
@@josephgrant757 I wouldn't say Steve Winwood is overlooked. He is probably better known for his talent on the keyboard/organ and songwriting. Winwood has been a fixture in music since the mid 60's. In my opinion, his guitar skills are equal to some of the greats and if he focused on just guitar maybe he would be better known for it.
Joseph...Steve did a lot of singing and playing in the shower - it's hard to get good video through all that water and steam...not to mention the soap bubbles.
He’s definitely not underrated. If he was, he wouldn’t be invited to be play such shows, he’s performed a lot with Eric Clapton, Tom Petty invited him to play a couple of songs with him. Traffic are in the rock and roll hall of fame. He’s sold millions of records over the world
That solo is something else. Not self indulgent, not too long, executed perfectly and in cohesion with the other musicians. The ending and shift into the chorus is also just so crisp and satisfying.
I'm 68 yrs old, so I started with SW when I was about 9 yrs old (he's only 6 yrs older than me) in the Spence Davis Group, then as a teenager it was Traffic and Blind Faith. I got back to SW in the '80s with Arc of a Diver and Back in the High Life. I keep coming back to Steve Winwood, on e of the best muscians of all time.
You have no idea whether or not some of those musicians on that stage got their start because of a diversity program for minority youth. There's not a thing wrong with manufacturing fairness and equality and equity in a society that is not meant to be a jungle, but instead a decent place to live and work, for all.
Love his guitar playing. He doesn't blind you with blazing speed, but floors you with feel and tension that builds. He let's the solo breathe. Very underrated player.
Not me. I have 78 on the counter and I remember Steve and Eric (Clapton) end of the sixties with Blind Faith. Famous concert in Hyde Park London with the (now) classic Can't find my way home. But agree, he still gets better. Same for Clapton.
I love the smile he has at the end. its like he is saying to the band, we nailed that son of a bitch guys. When you hear the roar of the crowd immediately like that you know it kicked ass. see ya next month Mr Winwood.
His wonderful vocals have aged better than so many of his peers from the late 60s and 70s. Had the privilege of being first row for this Crossroads concert. Dream come true for me to see him perform this live as well as Can't find my way home with Clapton
Traffic and Blind Faith made the best music I’ve heard in my life.Since 1975 when I heard both bands first time I’ve never felt that there is something better. I love Led Zeppelin, Free or Jimi Hendrix, but Traffic and Blind Faith made something really special.
I was a driver on the HIGH liFE tour. Steve and his wife Eugenie ate crew meal with us every night. Both diners but with Steve's Brit accent and Euinie's Tenessee accent put animated conversations between the two as very amusing.
I'm 54 and I have to listen to this at least once a week. My old gaffer Michael judge R.I.P. said that he used to go and see him in Birmingham back in the 60s. And that his blues voice stood out a mile 👍👍👍
You can tell how great Stevie's guitar work was by watching Eric's reaction afterwards when he whipped his guitar strap over his shoulder. I believe Stevie didnt play Dear Mr Fantasy without Eric after that.
I believe you're correct on that. Every vid after on Dr Mr fantasy included Eric. And yeah, that was a pissed off Eric whipping his guitar strap the way he did cuz the audience and band where totally engaged and loving that jam!!!
2007 Crossroads, what a treat for guitar lovers and music lovers in general. Music we've learned to appreciate. Not the next hottest tune or band for a few yr period. Hard to dispute Winwoods talents and his playing among the greats who've mentioned him as a inspiration.
