Thankful am I for an interviewer who LISTENS,...who doesn't talk all over all the comments of the guest. I so appreciate this!! Winwood is one fabulous artist, and thanks to this show I know more than I ever have. Great stuff! Again, thank you.
Steve Winwoods music is the best memory I have from my childhood. It’s embedded into my soul, especially higher love, I still get goosebumps and that song creates positivity in my blood. 🍻
Wow, it's well over 50 years since I first heard "I'm a Man" and now I get to hear an interview with Steve Winwood. He comes across as a straight-ahead no-nonsense musician, convincing in his observations, yet when I hear his music there's a whole other dimension. Feeling and artistry with total conviction.
I don't understand how some people become famous and household names & outhers who are just as good or better never find fame & fortune he's just a good as anyone I've seen or heard but a lot of people have never heard of him .
How much do we love this guy? Can't put it into words. This interview gives an insight into his background. Even if he does not, his music will live forever. What a good guy. A good human being to look up to, and listen to, even if you don't understand music.
Mr.Winwood is the essence of Soul Music.. You can feel the Emotions of the lyrics with every note.May he be always blessed with happiness, health, success, and love.
Clapton once said Steve was famous in London before anyone ever heard him. Word of mouth spread that there was a kid in Birmingham who sang just like Ray Charles.
Steve Winwood in my opinion is the most talented musician I've ever seen. He's been cranking out top hits since 1967, and his latest album at 69 years old is absolutely epic.
Boy, I sure blew it when I could have so easily gone to see Steve Winwood at a downtown Minneapolis bar about 12 years ago. I had just arrived and wasn't adjusted. I just love ❤️ Steve Winwood. Rock on, Steve. Rock on....
The straightest songwriter, band keeper, and universalist in the development of the Rock scene around 1970 and his band Trafikk imported Jazz, Folk music, not only Rock and Roll and Blues. A true master and better now than then
What a great interveiw. I didn't know anything about Steve Windwood until now. I love how Steve Jones shows respect to all artists no matter what type of music they play.
Steve Winwood. I find you to be the most amazing musician. Almost got to see you this summer in Atlanta, even had tickets. Alas, Corona had something to say about that opportunity. You are wonderful! I love you!!!
Love "Big girls walk away", classic track from his Talking back to the night classic album! And you can hear every bit of Ray charles's style of singing in Steve's voice in Steve's early years and ive never heard anybody that could immuliate Ray's voice as good as Steve, incredible! Perfect example is the track "Pearly queen" from the 1st album of Traffic ive ever heard which the self titled one. Powerful and classic performance of Ray's own vocal style by Steve on "Pearly queen"!!! And always interesting to hear how he was influenced by Ray as he mentioned in this interview. Steve's contribution to the music world has been nothing short of being simply amazing!!!!
i was in Manny's Music Store in Manhattan,New York... looking at Guitar EFX and i looked to my Left and Steve Winwood was standing next to me....checking out Distortion Boxes for his Show that night ....Low Spark Traffic Show.....Yeah He Looked Great....
Nice interview from another of the myriad men of that name. :-) I've been a Winwood fan since I was 14 or 15. First time I remember hearing him was the song "Strong Love" on the radio - unforgettable voice. Keep on Running was the first single I bought. I soon became a wee bit jealous though because my first two girlfriends were both besotted with him. That soon gave way not so much to envy as to amazement at his multiple gifts. Thank you for all the great music, Steve W.
They used to drop 'I'm A Man' on the dance floor in Manchester club South in the 90's, the place would explode! great great menacing dance floor grooving song, Traffic were also brill. Good interview.
"Skiffle is bluegrass played badly by English youth". Spot on observation. Great interview. SW one of the great musicians and singers (imho, of course).
winwood's a wicked guitarist as well.not flashy lead guitar ish way of presentation.much more riffy, rhythmic lead guitar ish way of presentation.his stuff on traffic's legendary yet overlooked as a band.
I regard Steve as one who never `SOLD OUT'. The time period of the 80's was as if an old hero who was tried and true returned from the battlefield bearing gifts from abroad!
Great singer and songwriter. Check out the live versions of Higher Love from the last couple of years. He nails the high notes and the song is in the original key. Winwood is a legend.
Never really known much about steve winwood. been mostly into metal and heavy shit since i was a teenager in the 80s and i still think hes the most talented and well rounded rock musician ive ever heard.
I like learning more about Steve. Big fan from the very beginning, covering his songs in my teen band years starting with Spencer Davis group. Really fun songs to pay and crowd pleasers.
Let’s not forget, Steve played keyboards with Hendrix on Voodoo Chile ( blues ) on the Electric Ladyland album.....Mitch Mitchell said the band would have killed to get Stevie join the band ........
I didn't hear about Steve Winwood until in the 80's didn't know he's been around in the 60's until my oldest brother told me he got me to listens to his songs I was so mind blowing glad he got me to listens to his music I still listens to his music like always say he is a good guy I really just loved the guy ..
Man I love this! To hear him talk about Traffic being a "niche" band vs his popularity rising in the 80's and people accusing him of selling out, well all I can say is give another listen to Higher Love and you'll hear that it's just pure soul. He said that he's essentially living off of Traffic and boy did he earn it. He has given us so much amazing music, his vocals and piano are among the best of progressive rock, and John Barleycorn Must Die never fails to give me chills with its gorgeous harmonies. Musical genius and down to earth man, that is a true legend.
Apparently though , Rundgren and the singer of XTC didn’t get along at all and butted heads making records together. I don’t think Rundgren liked his voice
Can't believe he asked Steve who did the majority of the singing in the Spencer Davies group,if he did any research or even listened to a few of their songs,he would have known who did their singing.
I don't think I've ever heard him do a single thing that wasn't excellent. Most of it great. Truly an artist beyond reproach. No ego, just joy and gift. Has played with everyone and they all love him. Santana calls him "the annointed".
I don't believe they have ever collaborated. John Paul Jones has worked with Peter Gabriel. Steve has quite an illustrious career as a sideman but working with Pete sadly has not occurred. I wish it was true. 2 huge prog rock Legends
He’s always like that! He has great conversations, but he reminds me of Larry King back in the day who made a point of never doing research on his guests and always made clueless comments 😂. That, and this, is always refreshing.
I saw with Traffic in 70' Wood, Capaldi, Winwood. It was a great concert, of thousands during that era, one of the top five. Winwood, the lone survivor. Along with Levon Helm, the great white singers of that era. Capaldi was under rated. That I know more about Winwood's vocal work than a professional radio man must mean he made a name somewhere else. Never heard of him.
Well I saw him open for Tom Petty and they didn't even let him have a sound check, therefore, he had all kinds of problems. Sorry I love Tom, But Steve is the bigger star. Made me sad to see him so overlooked.
I remember listening to Traffic in the late 70s alongside the Sex Pistols and the Clash. It was a strange time. I was watching footage of an early Pistols gig recently and noticed that most of the audience had shoulder length hair. Interesting times.
