Those of a certain age (I'm my 50s) steve wright was a must listen. I get that the humor was of its age and some, now, don't find it funny, but like most things in your past I look upon steve as a huge part of my listening life. It was big, funny, stupid, clever, ground breaking. Steve has a special place in my memories.
I agree western society reached its high point when Erika Eliniak burst from a cake with her thrups-out in Under Siege We've been going downhill ever since
I turned 55 the day before Steve died. Grow up Listening to Steve in the 80's I remember me and 4 friends on holiday in Blackpool when the Radio One radio show was there and the best part was Steve was presenting. just brilliant.
Such Sad News.. I loved listening to Wrighty in the 80s and 90s.. From a child to adult.. he helped shaped my sense of humour.. goodbye Steve.. you will be sadly missed by us all..
What great memories i have of listening to Steve Wright in the afternoon, started my first job in 1985 and discovered his show, every day i couldn't wait for his show to come on, me and my workmates would be in hysterics listening to him, brilliant, even had my songs played on Goldn Oldies, still got my badge, which will be treasured...R.I.P. Steve, you'll never know how much your missed...
A absolute giant of the airwaves he was my generations kenny everett grew up n the late 80s 90s in my 1st job listening to Steve wright on radio1 his characters were brilliant then latterly bbcradio2 he will never be replaced.. Rest in peace sir fillet of fish to fillet
My first job after leaving school in 1984 before heading off to University was in a warehouse and the time would fly by when Steve was on the radio. EVERYONE loved him. Truly a golden era.
Brilliant stuff, I've been listening to as much of ole Steve Wright in the afternoon that I can find on youtube, popping it all on a long playlist & driving along to it. So inventive, the silly jingles, nutty charachters, silly noise played over records, mis pronoucing words on purpose, the posse, Mr Angry, Sid the manager & Damien the social worker. Even as he slowed down hi Radio 2 shows were still always something to look forward to on a long drive in the afternoon. Now it's all done, RIP Steve Wright, you were brill! (That's wright!)
RIP Steve, I grew up with you after school on the bus home etc...before this humour was cancelled in the UK. A unique person who managed to straddle the complexities of satisfying everyone.
And nobody has maneged to remember Gervais, I am sure that was a Steve Wright character... but will miss Steve a true genius of radio. Yes back in the good old days.. and they were good days....
Used to listen to this show in 1990 on the bus to & from Crewe College, the driver used to have tears in his eyes. Wright was such a funny guy, I never ceased to enjoy his laughter. RIP
This has made my week! I remember hearing "Don't touch it" when I was at work and I cried with laughter and have always remembered it - It was the "was in the back of the telly and the wires were live" that made me crease as I'm an electronics engineer and was in the lab at the time. Thank you so much for sharing this :) I owe you a pint!
Still miss him. I feel like I knew him. He lifted us up no matter how trying our day was. I still believe he would still be here if his afternoon show had not been axed.
Wrighty in the afternoon was how you got through work in the 90s and noughties. And Big Tel in the morning over on R2..Perfect combination of chilled listening yet still entertaining.God BBC Radio is so pc and dull now!
I loved listening to Steve Wright from 1988 through to late 1990 and all his characters. I still listen sometimes now on R2 but although it's still good, I still think back to the good old days of R1 before Beirling got rid of all my favourites. :(
I so agree. I felt a bit guilty about not tuning in regularly to Radio 2 when he joined, but I so loved the 80s show absolutely nothing could touch it. I would say it was the greatest radio show of all time. For gods sake King Charles recognise this man with an honour.
Nice one for uploading this. I passed many a hilarious hour listening to this back in the day. Usually on a medium wave radio. Whilst skiving work. Brilliant !
Who remembers Pervie? And Arnie (Arnold Schwarzenegger "F**k you a**hoaal")? Those characters were hysterical! Steve Wright was the best! I studied in England from 1988 to 1991. Steve Wright helped me through those difficult days. Looking back though, the late eighties were the best years of my life. There was another late night lady DJ at that time with the sexiest voice that had a call in program. I can't remember her name. I remember listening to her show every night while I studied. If anybody out there knows who I'm talking about let me know.
Omg still so brilliantly funny. You look back and so much stuff just isn't funny anymore, can't explain it, tastes change, fashion dunno but this, had me in tears
Does anybody know the song Steve did around 90/91? there was a line about Goths wreckin' on the dancefloor.. and along came the psychobillies and beat them all up... i've not been able to find anything about it online
Does anyone know the name of the guy who does the ‘Don’t touch it’ bit and the Newsagent character,I read on another video that he died a few years back but never knew his name,he needs some recognition like the rest of the posse who did the other characters.
I want to hear Linda with the staring eyes and breadknife again, which came about from the song Li'l Louis and the World (I called you but you werent there) and her freaky voice!
In the days when Steve Wright was funny and original. Nowadays I'm afraid it's just clichéd and boring - Radio 2 need to pension him off, because it's certainly one show that makes me switch off...
