I really adore these WoS videos and honestly I never realised that Steve Wright was A) so good in the ring and B) so handsome by any standards (it's obvious where Alex got his good looks and talent from). I also love the, in kayfabe, Wright has an injured leg and then Maxine just comes over like "You know what'd make you feel better, mate? A signed Brian Maxine photo"

Hello guys! Just discovered your channel a week ago through Twitter and I really appreciate it! I'm big fan of OSW Review and AE Podcast and I get that same witty and funny vibe from them with Wrestle Me. But I love that with guys I learn so many things in every video, especially the ones on historical bits from British wrestling which I was only a little bit familiar with before that. So thanks for sharing all that knowledge (and, of course, making me laugh while doing it). I had a question if I may. After watching your videos dissecting the works of Rollerball Rocco and now Steve Wright from the 1970s, do you know if their pre-Tiger Mask/Dynamite Kid original style could be itself inspired by others? As a Frenchman, I've seen some archival footage from old French wrestling (who was big on French TV from 1950-1970, kind of just like World of Sports in the UK but with a decade headstart) and wrestlers from the mid 1950s are already pulling moves like the ones Steve Wright pulls here for example and some matches begin to have that frantic pace of Rocco's for instance? Would love to have your view and opinion on that comparison!
@WrestleMe
@WrestleMe Год назад
Hey! I'm not 100% sure, but there were plenty of trades happening in the 1960s between the two countries - Lord Alfred Hayes is supposed to have spent so long wrestling in France in the early 1960s that he not only spoke French fluently, but introduced the UK to Andre the Giant (when he was Jean Ferre). That period is such a little-recorded time, I don't know if anyone could say for sure!

Steve Wright actually went on to have a World Mid Heavyweight Championship title run, beating Marty Jones on ITV in 1987. Unfortunately he did so incognito in the guise of German skinhead character Bull Blitzer and mostly using rulebreaking rather than his skills (which were still in excellent shape). Furthermore he failed to show for Jones's return match for the belt, so Jones ended up beating a young Owen Hart to win the vacant title on TV later that year.

Steve Wright's younger brother Bernie Wright was another promising young prospectin the early 80s. Check his match with John Naylor. Then he came back from a trip to Stampede in about '83 with a Mr T/Road Warrior Animal hairdo and calling himself Bearcat Wright and breaking all the rules. He eventually suffered a humiliating TV tag loss to Big Daddy, after which he straightened out again and went back to being plain Bernie Wright, having no nonsense matches with people like Ray Robinson in ITV's final years.
