Fletch and Brantley are great examples. They're the top 2 active players in lowest swinging strike rates. As a Clevelander, I was on the hype train when I heard Brantley comps
@TheSportsGuru Kwan could probably do that but he's like Fletcher with the eye of Trout (but with like more pop imo, prob a 10-15 HR guy regularly). I actually just saw a tweet that he has the longest streak of pitches to start a career without wiffing (115) since 2000 and Fletch had the previous high (100)
This just shows you that you don’t need to swing for the moon for a homerun everytime you come up to bat, when this kid comes up to at bat he’s just trying to figure out how to get on base wether it’s a Walk, Single, Double or Triple and I think the players who hit for avg and have a high on base % are more valuable than all them power hitters that just want homers and because of that their avg and on base % drop dramatically.
This is exactly how I played in little league. No need for power swings just hit the ball in a way or place that gets you on base. Once I was on base, I was super fast and would steal bases left and right and score runs.
Kwan grew up in my hometown and there is so much pressure to go the corporate route as a career, plus growing up Asian American too in Silicon Valley, he worked his butt off (grew up in Fremont, CA)
About a year ago I was out to eat and saw Steven Kwan. This was the time when he was a Columbus Clippers and I met him talk to him and he was super nice. Later in the year I went to the Clippers game said what’s up and he gave me is Autograph a couple times it’s so cool to see how quickly he’s done well
That a smooth confident swing. Really understands that the object of this game is to not get out. Basics and keeping it simple will win more than fence chasing. Love it. Would have really fit in on the '95 team.
Honestly at the end of the day that's what "moneyball" was and then that morphed into "three true outcomes" but the core is intuitive. Get on base, don't get out
Wow. What a player. This young boy has all the makings of a great player. Reminds me of the older days when players actually hit for average and made it priority to get on base. Not just homer or strike out.
We need more slap hitters/on-base guys like Kwan here. Overall I think it would make the league more exciting, it's better than watching guys strike out and fly out all the time swinging for the fences imo.
And Cleveland has Straw leading off who is of a similar mold and we signed him for another half decade. J-Ram gonna have two guys like that in front of him for years now
His swinging strike rate in 2021 was 2.7%. as a career MLB rate since they've had the measurements (90s and beyond) that would be 2nd best during that period between Luis Castillo and Juan Pierre
I was always smallest on my teams but the biggest heart an soul an the main thing GOT ON BASE love this kid he's proving that home runs isn't the only thing that matter
He can't keep up the luck but he definitely feels like a guy who will regularly hit above or around .300 with a good walk rate. Almost like a mini Ricky except definitely less speed
He style of hitting is making good contact and just enough power to lift the ball into the out field. Thus, giving him a perfect balance of bat control and spray the ball in all direct of the field. He not your typical pull hitter or swinging for the fence. He is your perfect lead off guys. Keep this up and takes the walks, .400 batting average is a real possibility. Is only the first week. Let's see him doing this to memorial days. It's a must watch for Cleveland game for now
I drafted Ohtani in the 9th round of last year's fantasy draft, won my league - I also had Sal Perez on my team. This year I missed the draft and my team was autodrafted with Jo Adell, I've seen enough - I just dropped Jo Adell for Kwan.
They've done a poor job marketing the name. I went onto their website last week before the season started (bc I am a Kwan hipster like that lol) and their pic for buying a Kwan jersey said "Indians"
Good eye at the plate, prioritizes contact over power, sprays the ball all over the field, excellent speed...if Kwan tightens up his defense is it too soon to say that we may have a 2001 Ichiro on our hands?
@@Bievahh Kwan had a lower swinging strike in the minors than Ichiro did in any year of his career. There were plenty of amazing contact hitters a decade or so ago that had less longevity and other skills
As an Asian American. Happy to see an Asian American playing American Pro Sports. It's pretty rare to see an Asian American play American pro sports. There's been plenty of Asian imports playing American pro sports.
he had a huge slump and was all the way down to .240 or so but bounced back and was over .300 in the last week of the season.. barely dropped below to end at .298
He definitely was the table setter for the 2017 and 2018 Beaver teams. Broke my heart when he got injured, can't remember if it was during or just before the 2018 CWS, and he had to watch from the dugout. So glad he's finally getting his due, hopefully he'll keep it up.
He pulled his hamstring just before the championship series against Arkansas at the 2018 CWS, only made one pinch hitting appearance in that series. With him, the OSU offense was much better though they won it anyway.
Man great highlights but definitely needed the camera to jerk around and sway some more. Could I get a fuzzier and shakier video I really enjoyed that headache
Well, who do we have here? From the looks of this compilation, doesn’t necessarily hit for power, but he’s definitely an on-base threat. Looks like he’s got some speed too. Gotta see what that defense do, tho!
He had +3 DRS (defensive runs saved) and +1 by Statcast's outs above average through the first few games. He did have one non error (not called) error when he dropped a ball that tbh was in the sun but he had to charge and it was bases loaded
Aka his one error so far was trying to do too much and maximize the momentum before a throw home to get a double play. He looked like a good defensive CF in AAA and we've already got Straw so at least on D, feels like having Betts+JBJ as a fan rn
