Honestly, Steven universe is just wasted potential the show. It’s not bad, but they made such an interesting world and characters and just kinda half deliver. I still love the show, but really thinking in retrospect, there are so many flaws.

My biggest issue is how that spent so much time dedicating season 6 to the ptsd only for him to get help off screen. It felt like a cop out of giving Steven actual therapy. Also Steven gets away with all the shit he caused in season 6 which I don't like

I’m really annoyed that Steven never actually saw his mother as she was and that is so annoying since the show basically revolves around Steven’s relationship with his dead mum and building his own identity apart from her past and to not have her discussed properly in the last few episodes. She was a terrible person who made so many mistakes but in the end she turned herself around and he forgives other gems who are so much worse but won’t even acknowledge that at the end she did some good points. She was the most human character and I was disappointed there was no closure for her

Honestly Steven Universe is a mixed show for me. I loved seasons 2, 3, and the movie. Hated seasons 4 and 5. And season 1 and future was a mixed bag for me.

The thing that annoyed me about Steven Universe for the longest time is the lack of an Earthly threat. Yeah sure, gems and Diamonds, or even extraterrestrial threats, are the main focus/threat, but you'd think a secret service dealing with the alien tech and others would be on this. ESPECIALLY after the following that affected the world in some shape or form: 1. Earth's ocean being used by Lapis in S1 to try to get to Homeworld 2. Earthquakes when the cluster was forming 3. Spinel's injector in the movie I seriously doubt that the Earth governments, secret agencies, conspiracy theorists, or even terrorist orgs haven't made use of the gem tech or even did some research on them for how messy the crystal gems and gems in general have been in keeping their presence known.

Future had like 5 episodes of important content surrounded by filler bullshit like always with this show

It's so sad that such a landmark cartoon like this suffered from seasonal rot and ended on a whimper instead of a bang like it should have.

My thoughts: - the white diamond arc was rushed. -the ending of the show sucked because it all ending with a cringe hug. -corrupted Steven needed to be more screen time🤷🏻‍♀️

This is how I feel about Steven Universe *early season 1* : eh *late season 1- season 3* : amazing *season 4- season 5* : slight seasonal rot but still a good show with a good finale. *the movie* : better than season 4 and 5 but still not what it used to be. *future episodes 1-10* : fairly interesting start to a somber epilogue. *future episodes 11-20* : below-average with a weird finale. In short, Steven Universe is a series that was great in the beginning, got worse towards the middle, stagnated at the end, but ended on a good note. Edit: I think Future as a whole is good but the finale was a little underwhelming.

Unpopular opinion: Connie got worse when she picked up the sword. Also the final season of SU is way better the the final season of star vs the forces of evil. That was just horrible and plain bad.

We waited during so many freaking hiatuses....so many of them, just so we’d be given filler episodes about sadie’s mom or mayor Dewey. I came to this show to see the really creative idea of a species that is formed of intellectual gemstones that have varying abilities. I couldn’t care less about the background characters (especially the humans, not including the close ones). They should have been giving us fusions (such an interesting and creative topic), more landscape of place such as home world that had been talked about so much, and more exploration of gem-kind as a whole. They say Steven universe future was made to explore the human side of Steven and yet it seems like the normal Steven universe did that every other episode.

Finally, someone who agrees that the whole Connie and Steven argument was stupid and took way longer to solve than it had any right to. The worst part is that, as you said, it had potential and it was an interesting concept, but it was most DEFINITELY not the priority. Seriously, we had twenty more interesting plot points to focus on, and what we got was a fucking miscommunication that could've been solved in one episode, and the outcome would've been the same. I'm glad you brought up Pearl and Garnet's argument and compared to this one, because you were totally right. That was a much better conflict in every single way, and in my opinion, it was because it explained both sides of the conflict. We knew Pearl was completely wrong to do what she did, but we understood why, because she TOLD us why, and it made complete sense. What Steven did wasn't necessarily wrong, at least not in that situation since I can completely see why he would think he had no other option at the time, they were cornered and he really didn't know what to do. But Connie's argument was valid... except she acted like she didn't know why Steven did what he did, and just acted like he was completely in the wrong and had no reason to do what he did. And that's not even the character's fault, it's just the writing being inconsistent, because they showed that Connie SAW what Steven was going through in Mindful Education, she literally experienced it, she knew what he was facing and why he would do something as extreme as he did. She knew of his tremendous guilt over being in this world and about his mother's actions. It's just not in her character to abandon Steven with all that after he just came back from certain death. She would probably yell at him, sure, but if she did it would be for him to stop thinking he was his mom, that everything she did was not his fault. It would be to help him. But nope! She just teleported out of there and ignored him for a month, which seemed like a really dick move to me. But then they reunite- and only Steven apologized because of course he did- and the only thing that changed is that she cut her hair. Wow. Look, if Connie needed space, that would've been completely fine, and would've made sense considering what just happened. But it honestly looked like they had no idea what they actually wanted to say about this conflict. Steven was in the wrong but not really and Connie is in the right but not really and again, this SHOULDN'T BE THE PRIORITY. This could've been solved in two episodes and they could've used the remaining ones to show us an ACTUAL murder mystery. You know? With Connie and Steven looking for clues about who shattered Pink Diamond now that they know for sure that it wasn't Rose? That would've moved the plot forward, developed Steven and Connie's relationship way more than her not reading his texts for a month and would've made Connie understand Steven's side of the argument even more (because again, she should already have a level of understanding from Mindful Education) and dive deeper into this dilemma that Steven constantly lives, the guilt, the responsibility, the fact that he doesn't know if he even exists most of the time. You know, what they did with Pearl? But nope, fuck that! Seeing Steven getting ignored for fucking eight episodes is way more important than the murder mystery that they promised. At least the payoff was great...

There were unresolved plots like: Is Bluebird ever coming back? What was Freckle Lapis life like in Little Homeworld? What happened to the Mean Lapis? Where did Cactus Steven go after leaving the temple? Would Greg ever reconcile with his parents? What are Lars and the Off Colors up to? What adventures does Steven have after leaving Beach City? Who does Pearl end up with? Was Vollyball's eye healed?

Season 5, the movie, and "Future" are all kind of a mixed bag for me, even as a long time fan of SU. Season 5: I liked how Steven tried to reason with the Diamonds and had an awesome battle against them, but it really felt like some parts could've been fleshed out more, including the overall confrontation with White Diamond and her gradual acceptance of 'her flaws.' The Movie: There were some great songs and animation, and Spinel was an amazing character in both design and personality, but I wasn't too keen on the subplot of restoring the main Gems' memories. Future: The low-key tone was a nice change of pace and I liked seeing other gems participate in various Earth activities. It was also interesting how they delved into Steven's dilemma in helping others yet refusing to get any help for himself. Plus, his Kaiju form looked really cool and the final episode was a great sendoff for the series. But with that said, I feel there should've been more time spent on some of these issues, along with more investment in the effects of Kaiju! Steven. The monster portion could've lasted two segments, including actual chaos occurring in Beach City and major action, and then at least one episode with Steven going through therapy. Maybe then it would've led to a stronger payoff with the finale. That's just my two cents.

I like Steven Universe but it definitely had flaws looking at SU future specifically I didn't like how some plot points went no where, Jasper didn't stay shattered, the beach city citizens and Lars & Off Colors not helping to uncorrupt Steven as well as the finale being kinda underwhelming. I still liked the show overall but it isn't perfect.

What turned me off from Steven universe future was how they used Pink as a scapegoat when she was just a person who made many mistakes that only had good intentions, and call her selfish if you may she only wanted to be free from what seemed like a household that abused and patronized her (in this case matronize). This show kept sending mixed signals until the end where Steven flat out hates his mom for being imperfect and not able to fix her mistakes like come on after multiple seasons couldn't Steven have thought hey I don't have a purpose my mom just wanted to have me and share the experience of love that she couldn't have had?

Connie's mouth is on her lower jaw towards her ear...I get that she was supposed to be talking and facing away but they literally placed her mouth BEHIND CONNIE'S EAR. W H A T.

SU future made me appreciate SU much more because SU is much much much better than future

I like Future and all but it can’t even come close to the original series and the movie in my opinion. It was fun to watch but know that is it over I almost wish it never happened because the Movie had a better ending in my opinion.

Connie is the worst character in the series, and since the miscommunication arch, has existed to be completely void of criticism and just be there when someone needs to be close to Steven while also at the same time, acting as a strawman when needed

Unpopular opinion(maybe): I still reeeally want SU to return sometime in the future so we can get a real big final villain who challenges Steven and the Gems whole idea of “peace and love on the planet earth”. I feel we never got a villain who disagreed with the Crystal Gems ideology who actually posed a big enough threat to warrant them changing their beliefs in any way. Jasper, Bluebird, and the two Lapis Lazuli’s came close but they were dealt with pretty easily and they never made the main cast change the way they thought in a substantial way. So hope we do get one more entry in the franchise that gives us a final villain who’ll pose a big enough threat that will make Steven and co. have to really rethink there ideology, since I think there can be some good arguments against Steven’s Era 3 and the Crystal Gems obsession with Earth that could provide some interesting debates between them and this new villain.

I wish the Ronaldo episodes didn’t exist to me the episodes of him were annoying and does anyone really like him? I know there was some foreshadowing but I still think it’s a waste of an episode

The biggest let down no one is talking about is why did they have to do Peedee so dirty. They had someone who was one of the best townies and just sorta forgot about him. He was a perfect foil and human friend to Steven and I would rather have episodes with him than all the Ronaldo, Dewey and later Sadie episodes combined.

Or as I still love to call It; "Steven Universe's Serious Trauma Experience".

What upsets me about Future is that according to it, Pink Diamond was OP with her powers and tantrums. However, instead of using those powers to make her family submit or bubble them, she just runs away? That’s stupid and ruins the whole point of her character if she had all that power to be taken seriously but never used it.

I like how Steven got away with literal murder. And nobody seems to even pay it any thought. Shattering was portrayed as this act of cruelty that the Diamonds were known for. But when Steven does it, nobody gives a damn. Just because you go through stuff, dosen't justify getting away with stuff like that. Thats a very bad message (I remember Steven doing some other things that he got away with over the course of SU Future....)

im glad you enjoyed the movie and future more than me! i still enjoyed them, just because of how long i've been watching the show, but after change your mind's ending i was left feeling unsatisfied with how they handled the conclusion. it felt rushed, and it made me a little peeved considering how they devoted an entire season to showing peridot's redemption, yet they redeemed the big baddies of the entire series off-screen. i definitely liked future more than the movie (although the movie has some fantastic moments), but overall i wish they had more time to spend fleshing out the concepts they only tip-toed around.

I don't think Steven Universe is one of the best shows ever made but it was one of my favorites that came out recently or during the "renaissance" era. I liked some elements of the show but I was disappointed as to how future ended in terms of how Stevens corruption was handled.

I hate Connie. The arc made me completely done with her. I think she's the most immature character, at least in that arc

I feel like Steven not excepting change in his life is honestly realistic. A lot of people after a depressive state like to believe that they are fixed and nothing will ever go wrong again. When in reality they are focusing on the wrong thing. It isnt getting back to the same happy place you once were, we are all constantly changing and growing, learning from each other. And that would also mean out issues fo as well. But that just means we need to learn how to be adaptable people who recognize that the river is taking them somewhere; just go with the flow.

BoJack Horseman handled depression and character growth better

That James Baxter clip was so pretty but ngl it really caught me off guard because the animation was SO much better than the regular animation in the show. It’s not bad animation. It’s just that James Baxter is a lot better. My reaction to the scene wasn’t “oh Steven accepted himself” it was “WOW wtf happened to the animation!”

Trying to watch Steven Universe Future as someone with a lot past trauma and depression issues was uh...bad for me to say the least. I could never finish it because I believe 13 and 14 (or 16? it's been awhile, I don't remember) affected me SO hard because it was sad episode after sad episode of shit I related to in a bad way that I sent me into a depressive spiral that lasted two weeks and I decided I can't ever watch it (at least not for the forseeable future) otherwise it would negatively impact my mental health further. That entire situation led to me watching this and actually feeling something like dread and anxiety when you started showing clips of Future. That's saying something, man. I can't really say if it was good because of that emotional bias, but I won't lie and say I didn't heavily wish there was some sort of relief in between all of the serious topics so I could at least have a breather between the emotional hell that was the middle parts of the season that I saw personally and what would later move on into the latter half that I know was just as undivided.

Unpopular Opinion: I think Snow Day is the worst episode of Steven Universe Future and probably one of the franchise's worst. The Crystal Gems were annoying and OOC, the humor was mediocre, and the message of having fun instead of working is not only overdone, but it's also Return to Neverland levels of frustrating. Edit: To be honest, I totally forgot about this comment. I haven't seen Steven Unuverse since it ended, nor have I rewatched this episode in particular, so take these out of date opinions as a time capsule of how different we were back in 2020. My apologies

SU and Future as a whole was just ok for me. There were some things I like and others that I frankly could've done without. It was an interesting experience

This show ended on a low note. Ever since season 3 this flawed show became worst and worst over time until the writers ruined every character and made the main character a jerk. What a mess.

Everything feels out of focus. Especially Steven's inconsistent pink powers.

If I were to tweek one thing about the finale, it would be to have white not redeemed right away, but to have everyone, including blue and yellow decide that retreat is best in White's moment of weakness. In just a moment, she took control of the lot of them, so it's logical to think they would feel they cannot fight White. An episode or two with Blue and Yellow stuck on earth, now rebels themselves could be interesting for their further redemption. Meanwhile, showing white stewing on the fact Pink is really and truly gone, expanding on her overall motivations and past, and what Pin meant to her. Showing her eventually start to blame herself for Pink essentially committing suicide. The final payoff could be with her chasing them to earth, at first to try and force the surviving diamonds to come back, but then seeing that they fear her, seeing all the corrupted gems from the war, including ones loyal to them. That, to me, would be a more believable reason for her to break down and totally re-evaluate everything, especially if her motivations were revealed to be the betterment of all gems, and that she cared for them like children. Realizing that her actions were not in their best interests, and she was only hurting everyone she was meant to protect. Aside from that, more lapidot would have been nice, alongside some more use of bismuth, which could have been worked into the ark of the diamonds on earth. Stuff like a scene where Yellow questions Bismuth why she stopped doing what she was built for, and bismuth expressed she didn't really want to do it. And even Bismuth asking if Yellow truly enjoyed what she was created to do, or if she just did it because she feared what White might do to her. A bit more showing that Pink's objective terribleness came from her mistreatment by the other diamonds too would be nice, since I feel it wasn't touched on enough. But I imagine the CN higher ups just wanted things to be done faster, because the whole wrap up feels like it was pushed through to get to the movie faster.

It's nice to see a reviewer say something nice about future instead of just describing it as the laziest show in existence. I liked the show I just wish alot more people would feel the same way about it.

Glad to know you also enjoyed Future. The finale was anticlimactic, but I feel it made sense. Besides that, I just love the character of Steven Universe and the arc he goes through. The buildup of Future is fantastic imo. He’s one of my favorite characters, just because of the depth and flaws he has. It’s so weird to watch Growing Pains and look back on the original show, it kind of feels messed up lol. (Also, Fragments was soooo good)

Deadnaming? Imagine being an orphan constantly being called THE NAME OF YOUR DEAD MOTHER WOULD IT EVENTUALLY PISS YOU OFF?

Ppl need to realize that Steven Universe didn't have good pacing/too many "townie" episodes because those episodes were what Cartoon Network wanted. CN really only wanted a show about a magical gem boy with his magical gem sisters that they could air reruns of (without rerunning episodes that took place in larger arcs). When the Crewniverse said that they didn't have enough episodes to tell the story, they don't mean that they just flat out didn't have enough episodes. Obviously a series with over 150 episodes is more than enough wiggle room to write a good show. What they meant was that so many of those episodes essentially had to be townie ones that CN could air reruns of, making it a lot harder to create episodes that can fit into larger story arcs.

Part of me feels like the Movie should have taken place after SU: Future. Given that Steven, as you said, essentially learns the same lesson. It also means that the final moments of the series are celebrating the characters and giving the audience an amazing sendoff instead of an ambiguous and kinda depressing ending.

The show got cancelled because Garnet’s weeding, if not they would have recieved a last season that was going to be the whole Diamond Days arc. Sad

The problem with Steven Universe's finale...is that it aired in the same year as OK K.O.'s finale. That's really it. XD

This show was willing to get realistic with mental health so it is weird how they weren’t realistic with other things like having a bunch of gems do a coupe and completely overthrow the diamonds because they still remember the past atrocities the diamonds have done, have jasper stay dead since shattering was another huge subject in the show also to show that you can’t save everyone no matter how hard you try ( side note remove yellow diamonds new special ability because she can basically revive any gem without the other diamonds which is kinda stupid,) and finally HAVE STEVENS MONSTER ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING BESIDES ROARING. Stevens transformation was improperly built up and misused I MEAN COME ON IT WAS LITERALLY DEFEATED BY A HUG. Look it may sound like I hate the reasoning behind the hug but really I actually love it but I still believe that the final episode would have been way more better if Steven would have went in a rampage and destroy some of beach city than have the gems try physical stop him with their abilities but without severely harming him THEN have Connie give an speech and THEN have them all hug him turning Steven back to normal. And before anyone tries to call me a hater just remember this is my own opinion.

It is weird, I heavily enjoyed Steven Universe back when it aired. But now that I'm looking back on Steven Universe, i realize how many issues it actually has, how incredibly the endings of SU and SU Future are etc.

I have sooo many problems with how Rebecca and the Crewniverse handle the show last season and the SU Future season, most of them resume in just 2 words.....RUSH and FILLER......so many useless episode dedicated to the town people that serve nothing, and every time they actually focus on the main story, was RUSH and non stop, its not as BAD as Game of Thrones season 8, in that regard SU handle the end much better, but still.....White Diamond god introduce FINALLY and she was everything we wanted and more......and her treat and the entire Diamond authority is solve in like...4 episodes?....no I not kidding, the final boss...the main antagonist that have been hinted the entirely of the show....appear and 4 episodes later she is beat and turn into a good guy......wait WHAT?, that was my reaction, and look, I loved the final episode, and re watch it multiple times, but still, that is so dumb........and my second major issue is ROSE QUARZT or Pink Diamond....I was on board with many who see her now as a horrible person.....until I start THINKING......what she did wrong? oh yeah she start a war that cost hundred of gems life, and left behind poor innocent Spinel as a trashed doll, yes sooo horrible..........but if she didn't do that.....EARTH WILL NOT EXIST, STEVEN WOULD HAVE NEVER BORN, GREG NEITHER and the Diamond Authority would have continued extinguished not thousands of gems....no, they would continuing THANOS BILLIONS OF ORGANIC LIFE around the entire universe....fuck Rose is a fucking heroine, she wasn't perfect but her decision to stand against her sisters who would not listen to her was the correct decision, and yes she should have do it as HERSELF and not fake her own death, but in the end it doesnt matter, if she didnt did all she did, Earth would have extinct millenniums ago, so in the end the show demonize her and make even Steven hate her and never gave her a redemption, her portrait was put inside Lion like she did with Bismuth, and thats it, the last we heard about Rose in the show was Steven lashing on Greg saying he is as bad or worse than his mom.....JESUS wtf? Steven way to think of his own mother is just wrong and nobody debated that, I almost think they now all agree....wow I mean Pearl will be a SLAVE still, Sapphire and Ruby would never become Garnet or maybe would have and been SHATTER for doing it, Amethyst would have become an Off color due been born runt, again Steven and Greg would not exist and also all Beach City people......again how exactly Rose ended been the BADGUY? and WHITE DIAMOND ended been forgive for all the lives she and her other sisters destroyed under their Authority.....what the hell is that? I just could just shut down my brain watching all that. And SU Future was pretty much a FILLER SHOW, nothing really happen.....I mean some ideas are interesting, the trauma of Steven, Steven shattering Jasper, and the story of Pink Pearl......but its just that, interesting ideas not really NEED IT to see to move the story, cause the history important beats where solve in the season 5 finale....you can cut the movie and the Future series out and nothing really change, so....why they did it?Look I still think SU is an important show and I love it, but the season 4, 5, the film and SU Future have too many issues and writing problems, and let me kinda disappointing in the end.

See one thing that really pisses me off about future is that they gave Yellow the ability to heal shattered gems, first off it gets rid of the impact of shattering so it ruins the episodes in the past the reference or show the impact of shattering. Also one of the BIGGEST PLOT POINTS of the show was the "shattering" of pink diamond, so since yellow can heal shattered gems doesn't that mean she could have fixed pinks shattered gem? Obviously later we find out pink wasn't actually shattered but the Diamonds and homeworld were so effected by the shattering because pink wouldn't be able to come back ever but if yellow is able to heal shattered gems that means she WOULD be able to come back so the diamonds shouldn't have been that effected by it. It's a huge plot hole

I get what you mean with how you view I am my monster. The tone flips throughout the episode, however it is still one of my favorite episodes. Because I view it as how a person's thoughts, with depression, often flip flop between figuring out what to do, blaming yourself, others, etc. Like everyone saying it was their fault, then Connie saying 'it is your fault, and here's why' is a great example of someone with depression, who is trying to process their feelings, at least with mine. When I was depressed, I would replay things in my head, blaming myself and others for it. Then sometimes I would pause it, and truly think, was it my/their fault? Why do I think that? What makes it a possibility? And Steven crying at the end, honestly makes me tear up. Because it often makes me think of when someone with depression finally gets the support and love that they need. Because sometimes getting true help just makes you cry, and that's okay. They feel so much pressure, confusion, worry, joy, and relief just come all together into a bundle that just doesn't seem to go away, unless you cry. Like I said, I know the episode isn't the best, with the writing, the rushing, etc. But I like to think the entire episode as a whole is how a depressed person's mental state is

Although I know a lot of people feel differently, Steven Universe Future was my favorite thing to come out of the franchise run. I have felt guilty for having anxieties and tried to hide it because I want to focus on loving other people. You get tired of helping and working endlessly, but are hit with an anxious nausea when you stop. The mini series is not perfect by any means, but to see a cartoon character go through it... I really needed that. We aren't who we were, but it isn't a bad thing. I suppose it just means it's time for the next adventure.

The finale of season 5 could have been a season by itself. They crammed so much into the finale, its actually insane.

Reading these comments, it seems that the internet is still going through it's phase of disliking the show. It had its flaws for sure, but I feel people tend to exaggerate how much this show's flaws affect it's overall quality, especially due to the horrible scheduling having an effect on initial viewings. Adventure Time was a far more flawed show, but I think it's starting to regain appreciation for what it did right, and I expect the same to happen to Steven Universe in the future now that people can rewatch the show from start to finish.

It was just a cycle of “I love this!” And “why ISn’t it LONGERRRRR” AND JUST PURE PAIN until it ended.

Nick always manages to resonate with my opinion and how I feel on shows. I like how the show isn't glorified or shaped to be perfect (like the Roundtable always do) but it isn't butchered due to it's uncontrollable flaws (like EVERY other critic that now think Steven Universe is "garbage" uses against the entire show). I know they're opinions but Nick summed it up correctly. Steven Universe not once made me feel like it deteriorated from itself. Another great video man.

Connie getting mad at Steven was so stupid. Sure, what you said about then being a team and such makes sense. But still. It’s not like Steven could have said “Wait, let me get my best friend and THEN we can go to homeworld and you can take me in”. He made an impulsive decision to save his friends and family. She should have realized that and stopped being so petty about it.

This is a great analysis! It really brought me back in to the Steven Universe mindset that I loved.

7:36 - 8:56 I have a few things to say about the diamonds and Steven's relationship with the diamonds: 1. It is totally fair for Steven to not only distance himself from the diamonds but also to not forgive them. The diamonds have hurt him and his loved ones. However, I don't think it's fair for Steven to ignore how the diamonds are trying to change their ways for better, especially since Steven was trying to get them to change their ways. 2. I do think that Blue Diamond and maybe Yellow Diamond did genuinely change their ways out of the goodness of their hearts. White Diamond needed some work but by the episode "homeworld bound" it became more genuine. 3. Blue Diamond really started change after losing Pink Diamond. After 5000 years of depression, Blue learned the truth about what Pink did and comes to believe that Steven is Pink. Over time Blue starts to regress until Steven makes Blue realize that she not only hurt Pink but drove her away. This is enough for Blue Diamond to try to make up for the terrible things she's done because she did genuinely love Pink Diamond and the last thing she ever wanted to do was hurt Pink. Blue Diamond was also the first of the diamonds to accept Steven as himself and ultimately comes to love him as himself and as a reminder Pink Diamond, who Blue ultimately comes to accept is gone forever. 4. Yellow Diamond also cared about Pink Diamond but cared for Blue Diamond more. It was ultimately her connection to Pink Diamond and especially Blue Diamond that made her be more honest with her feelings and side with Steven. Yellow Diamond also comes to accept Steven and love him as himself. 5. White Diamond didn't genuinely change but she did start to show that she loved and missed Pink Diamond, while accepting Steven Universe as himself. By the episode "homeworld bound", I believe White Diamond's love and concern for Steven were genuine. 6. The diamonds showed genuine remorse for what they put Steven through throughout the original series in the episode "I am my monster". I am also glad that the diamonds had a hand in helping Steven during his most desperate hour. While it's possible Steven hasn't necessarily forgiven diamonds, I would like to think that after the events of " I am my monster" that he has forgiven them, or at the very least tolerates them more since they do genuinely love Steven.

Future was both a bore and a chore. Redundant, dull, predictable, heavy handed and frustrating. The entire plot relies on everyone being out of character and/or being oblivious to Steven. In the rare instances that they are not oblivious they do not push enough and give up the moment he pushes them away. Steven takes no accountability for his actions and gets a pass By merit of being “mentally ill“. They don’t handle this major shift in tone with enough subtly and it ends up being heavy handed and cartoonish- exactly the way you don’t want to portray mental issues. Every episode I questioned the writing of the characters, the existence of others and the inclusion of still more. Things that frustrates me: *Connie was hardly in the season but she delivers the anime kiss. *Steven is perfectly fine with the diamonds in the movie and his discomfort comes from their overbearing love for pink being projected onto him. *The diamonds don’t do what they do for necessity, but to appease “pink” because they want her favor again. Aka Steven. They want his approval. They basically abandon their empire. Yellow even says she disbanded all of her armies. That is not an action to further some semblance of her former hierarchy, it’s all just to appease Steven. *Steven constantly pushes everyone away and that shit gets tired after the second episode of him doing it. Not just because it’s exasperating to watch, but because it is out of the characters of everyone involved. Stevens circle is supportive and they listen to him. It makes no sense that he would just isolate himself. *the film and time skips hurt future. I enjoyed the film, but future pretends like it didn’t happen. All the progress Steven made is maddeningly abandoned. All the growth and love we see him having for all the CG’s as he restores their memories is just gone in future. All their relationships seem superficial and distant. The time skip also makes me question “why was none of this discussed before? We’ve had two time skips for any of this to come about but they gave the whole ptsd thing to future because honestly, they didn’t know how to find a conclusive was too finish a show hat they otherwise thought was concluded. *tonal dissonance. This show handles drama well in small doses. Having the entire season centered on it makes it apparent that they cannot do it well for long. Steven rapidly becomes an edgelord and simply isn’t enjoyable to follow. But as usual we are crippled by his perception. No one bats an eye when Steven breaks down. No one sits him down or relates to him and I found that infuriating. The gems have been through just as much trauma as him yet Stevens mindset is “YaLl cAnt reLatE. YoU gUys CAuseD me So mUCh reTroActIvE sufFErIng.” Steven/Rose also caused them a lot of grief but no ones blaming him. All of that resentment was addressed and worked out in the series proper. Steven blames everyone else for his own insecurities and anxieties the entire season. *filler. How even did they still manage to cram in stupid filler episodes? So many non and part time characters given screen time only to have no resolution or meaningful growth. Lapis, peridot, bismuth, Connie, Sadie, Lars, onion, Jasper, spinel, the diamonds, Greg, volleyball- all irrelevant and not given the proper screen time to make them useful. *pacing- as usual it’s all over the place and punctuated with contrived conflict or misplaced levity. Twenty 11 min episodes is not enough time to handle this kind of topic in a good way without more careful and articulate writing. * plot threads. Plot threads fraying everywhere. Greg’s parents were abusive? Steven actually thought it was a good idea to propose to Connie???? Garnet is a character outside of fusion??? Pearl was the first CG to witness Steven breakdown and turn pink and she doesn’t confront Steven??? The gems inexplicably don’t see that Steven has grown up despite seeing that Steven has grown up in the movie???? The chest? The world building?? What happened with homeworld? The planet was in decay. What about their genocide victims?? Steven just gets to be an angsty asshole all season? *All the obvious slapstick comedy is retconned to be “trauma”. In that case, the whole damn cast should be throwing gem temper tantrums. *the. Finale. Felt nothing. I just sat there like “welp...guess that’s it.” Why is Steven even a lizard??? What was the point of spending all that buildup to have him rave out for less than an episode and then get hugged? His problems are solved by Everyone blaming themselves for his actions and hugging him. What? Where is the accountability??? Did they hurt him? Yes. Did he hurt them? Yes. So it should be a group apology, not just an apology to Steven. Future has no rewatchability for me.

The movie felt like a recap of the OG with a couple new things. Also it made Pink look like a bad guy again.

The best way I can describe how I feel about the show is "missed potential." I used to be pretty involved with the theory community when the show first came out, and a few years afterwards, and I can recall so many theories that blow the actual story we got out of the water. I actually hope they remake it one day because this show honestly deserves such a better story

I was kinda annoyed about the being able to fix shattered gems thing Like it’s great and all that jaspers alive, but they really built up that being it, the one way to finish off a gem, only to turn around and make it just as temporary as Proofing is by being able to fix it

When I first heard of Steven Universe Future being a small season wrapping up the missing holes in the original series, I was expecting episodes focusing on all of the side characters that didn’t get enough of an explanation or plot and I was genuinely excited bc I was left with a ton of questions about Pink Pearl, the diamonds, spinel, the off-colors, and little homeschool. When it was apparent the main plot was yet again about Steven with small, thrown to the side side plots about the more interesting characters in the background, I was pretty disappointed. Yes, it’s nice seeing them finally acknowledge Steven’s trauma, but telling us Future would wrap up the loose plot points gave me pretty big expectations that would end up being deflated due to yet again focusing on Steven.

It really bums me out that the show ended the way it did with Future. Stevens depression while kinda making sense in the light of everything he went through, also kinda just ruined the message that the movie had. Growing through trauma and becoming a better person because of the things that hurt us. His whole lesson that not only he realized himself, but taught Spinel was kinda pushed aside. It could be blamed partially on the Diamond powers but at the same time I don’t think that’s it, since they seem to attribute it to Steven only caring for others and not himself. But then that kinda also shoved aside the song he made about loving himself. Idk, it just felt not too thought through in retrospect of the most recent events in the series.

It's hard to have finality with this show when I keep getting videos about it being shoved into my recommended. And yet I still watch them all. I love it.
