Steven Universe Theory: Peridot's Missing Pieces 

This isn't to do with the theory but, Peridot's fingers were made of metal and they aren't attached to her body, I think she had her metal powers the whole time to move her limb enhancers.

Speaking of limb enhancers I found it strange that Yellow Diamond seemed to not notice (or didn't bother to acknowledge) that Peridot was without her enhancers in "Message Received". Wouldn't it have been a clear indicator for YD (seeing an Era 2 Peridot without her limb enhancers) that something was wrong?

I hope Lapis decides to search part of the ocean (or all of it, if necessary) to help Peridot find her limb enhancers

I notices something when they proofed period the first time and the limbs fell, the fingers fell away from the arms not with them. Before we know about peri's metal powers we thought the limbs them selves were connected be a electric or magnetic field allowing the fingers to move because peri was told she had no powers which was a lie. what if homeworld lied about how the limbs work so era 2 gems wouldn't find out about their powers and become disobedient after being lied to. they could have been told the limbs use a gems "brain waves" to move the limbs when it is the peridots using their metal powers the whole time with out knowing it.(I used brain wave because I couldn't think of what else to call how gems work)

I never got the ableist vibe from Peridot at all...like, at all. I always saw her limb enhancers as sort of symbolic shackles attaching her to the conventions of homeworld. They were given to her to carry out duties that homeworld chose FOR HER as opposed to forging her own path as an individal. Without her technology, of course she is going to seem disabled in comparison to the crystal gems. She's very young and hasn't nearly had enough time to explore her own potential free from the constraints of gem homeworld norms. Her newly discovered ability to manipulate metals is the first step to what she may truly be capable of. And I have a feeling she's only going to grow from hereon. She draws many parallels to Pearl in these regards. Also, I don't quite buy the whole "era 2" thing. I have a feeling that was simply a lie told by the diamonds to discourage newer gems from stepping out of line.

I am just waiting for Lapis to get Peridot her limb enhancers back.

Rebecca said we weren't going to see peridots limb enhancers for a while. Hmm, My theory is that in some way, most likely involving lapis peridot will get her limb enhancers out of the ocean. I think it's extremely unlikely that she'll start using them again because that would be a bad message to send. She'll see them, get excited, then realize she doesn't need them as much as she thought.

It's interesting as a discussion point but I think I do fundamentally disagree with the idea that amethyst trying to throw the tablet was her being ablelist, I always interpreted it as her trying to help peridot not rely on something that she seemed to be using as an escape device. Of course it wasn't exactly subtle and amethyst ain't exactly nice when she's doing this stuff, but she's right that peridot doesn't need to rely on fancy tech to still be a worth while gem. She might not be able to shape shift but she is still worthy of existing. (Though the lesson of the episode is kinda weird when she gains metal powers but hey it's nice knowing she has things homeworld couldn't detect and overlooked, much like how they seem to overlook the potential of the planets they conquer.)

I'm going to express disagreement, and ideally in a civil format. I do not think that the examples given are strong arguments for Peridot being disabled. Yes, some of her struggles could be paralleled to the struggles of disabled individuals, but she herself is not, and I have two core refutations. The first is the argument about how gems cannot physically develop: they are born with their limitations. Yes, this is analogous to disabled people, but there are abled bodied people who also have their limitations. The only reason this particular limitation is relevant is because it makes Peridot short and unable to do heavy lifting, which is not a uniquely disabled issue. The example of it being an issue is when she is trying to do tasks meant for maintaining a kindergarten, which means she needed tools for a specific trade. The kindergarten is also a key subject here. Yes, it was Peridot's job on home world, but that doesn't mean it is what Peridot chose to do with her life. She was content with the job she was given and raised exclusively using the equipment it required. Because she no longer has that job, it isn't a necessary element. Yes, she may feel lacking without it, but so can a former soldier without their equipment or a former carpenter without their tool belt: it was previously a regular necessity, but now would only serve for comfort. I say this predicting that Peridot is going to slowly ween herself off of those old habits. Arguably, she has. In Beta she displays much less dependency on the tablet, and a new passion or profession: meep morp, or art. Especially since Peridot is a secondary character, we only have so much to work from. I understand the parallel, and there's obviously no problem with people feeling represented in that sense. But I felt like expressing my own personal observations and how it seems more like Peridot's relationship to her limb enhancer is moreso akin to a worker and the tools of their trade, and that Peridot's later dependency on technology is due to habits formed from her line of work, not out of a necessity for survival. I am perfectly content with disagreement and will discuss with anyone interested, but respect anyone's desire to stay out of such a discussion. It's observations based on a work of fiction. It isn't all too serious.

I think bismuth will come back and build limb enhancers much stronger

I just got an amazing idea! What if Peridot becomes able to summon something like her limb enhancers for when she really needs to like how the other Gems can summon weapons and Steven can summon a shield?

I think the ableism thing is way off. Limb enhancers are just that: enhancers. They're accessories. They're not like a wheelchair or assistive technology and Peridot was convinced she couldn't function without them. Turns out she can and she's better off knowing that she doesn't need them to be strong and she doesn't need to rely on tech because that's not what makes her great. And yeah, the line "I still have on of those things" is a joke 'cause she does have all three. *Dignity* with her new found confidence, her new *status* as leader of the Crystal Gems (lol), and she has her old foot and the tablet (*limb enhancers*).

Peridot needs some Crystal Gem brand limb enhancers.

I would love to see Peridot regain her limb enhancers and then incorporate them in a fusion with Amethyst. She could then repurpose them into some form of upgraded ability/ weapon. I think it would be cool to combine Amethyst's ability to improvise and Peridot's technological expertise to mend their surroundings to their advantage. I believe it really would emphasize their ability to beat the odds and come out on top regardless of their "defectiveness."

With her new metal powers couldn't she just make new limb enhancers with old earth technology and control them with her powers? I can not be the only one thinking that ever since she got her powers.

I believe that Peridots ferrokinesis was not a newly found ability but one she used all the time without knowing. How do you think her limb enhancer fingers were controlled?

We all know that Amethyst loves material things and it's hard for her to throw things away, or she doesn't want to throw them away. We see that in Maximum Capacity, how she casually wanted to keep everything (I understand her because my room is full of stuff too) and we saw that her residential block aka room is full of junk. She's a hoarder. She loves hoarding things (most likely because it makes her feel better about herself, just as it helps me) and her getting rid of Peridot's limb enhancers is just so...out of her character, and that most certainly isn't something the Crewniverse would do. In Catch and Release, we see Amethyst throwing them into the water, but she was the only one who stayed looking at the water afterwards. Maybe she retrieved them and now they're in her room somewhere. We'll see in the future.

If we're defining Ableism as acknowledging that people with a disability will struggle in certain fields, how is it a negative thing? As someone with Asperger's I can acknowledge Im not going to be as good in certain social situations than other people, Its not ableist to say that, its just a fact. Thats why I cant understand Ableism, I dont see how telling someone they physically cant do certain things or that they will struggle with certain things is bad. If you dont your keeping them in false belief, which in my opinion is worse.

wow. Interesting. I never even considered this but it makes sense. in a way peridot is disabled. i mean, its not a huge disability. but it is still technically a disability since she can't do things most other gems can and she can't do her job without technology. id almost compare this to having slightly blurry vision. sure you can see without glasses (it's not like you're blind), but at the same time you need glasses in order to do certain things in your life.

I don't think Peridot's arc is ableist at all. Saying that Peridot is wrong to want her limb enhansors back, or that it was wrong for homeworld to give her them in the first place is like saying it's wrong to cure a physical or mental disability in a child who hasn't been born yet, or trying to convince a paralyzed person to not go through surgery to be able to walk again. There's nothing wrong with wanting to do what anyone else can, especially if it's something as vital as communicating or walking. Ableism isn't wanting to be able. Ableism is, however, discriminating against someone who has a disability. You should never want your child to be born disabled, but if they were, you should love them just the same.

Honestly I think most SU fans don't realize how much trauma Peridot could actually have. With the crystal gems neglected her and excusing her "tantrums" and Lapis straight up abandoning her, this could be an actual problem for her...

I never thought about the fact that Peridot didn't have the strength and agility of the other Gems. I just thought they'd gotten it from bring in the war. but now that I know she can't get stronger, I feel sad for her again... :'(

Yeah, I know a lot of people want Peridot to remain without her technology, for corrupted gems to remain corrupted, and for this show to basically become Adventure Time sci fi edition. But people don't think sometimes.

This is why I dislike"ablism" as a concept. Peridot can function and even thrive without the constant tech like her limb enhancers or the iPad. In the caste system of the Diamond Authority they gave her a purpose she couldn't perform without the tech. There it would be ablist. But on Earth she can function perfectly well enough and would've even found a way to open that panel. She's just using the tech to hide from a reality she isn't completely comfortable with. It's escapism, and yet people cry "ablist" when others try to subvert the compulsion.

Peridot is like an adorable and stubborn child that want to feel powerful, but she does what she thinks is best, and tries to understand others' feelings.

Amethyst knows that she herself is not perfect,so she knows that peridot would be perfect with her technology.She doesn't want to be the only one who isn't perfect.

Ferrokinesis isn't accurate, unless they specifically specified that she can only move ferrous based metals, like iron, steel, etc. btw non ferrous metals are like aluminum tin etc.

She is still very smart, able to build a giant advanced mech-suit out of old Earth tech or a Canon with an old Infuser, things she can then use as assisting tech.

You know why Peridot is really awesome as a character? So many people who just aren't represented or at least not properly relate to her! For example. My cousin only has one leg and she relates to her on the whole disabled standpoint, and I have autism and I personally think Peridot does too (Probably not true but I really relate to her)

What amethyst did wasn't ablest, peridot doesn't need those things to move faster. The only reason she got them was because she was weak. Technically she didnt need them for her job either. She did what she had to do, someone else just moved the panel. Saying this is ablest is like saying not giving sapphire limb enhancers is ablest because she's short and weak.

I never got an ableist vibe. I always thought it was a metaphor for being too reliant to technology, the same way as a teenager is addicted to their smart devices. This is why she adored her tape recorder and tablet.

I really like the points you describe in this video, but I honestly read things somewhat differently. I read it not as Peridot being disabled, but as having a form of body image issues. Homeworld told her she wasn't good enough unless she looked a certain way and used certain technology. So they give her limb enhancers to make her "better." They snuffed out her true potential by making her focus on fitting their ideal for her and their societal standards. And simultaneously I think they made her almost addicted to technology by constantly enforcing the idea that she needed it.

I think it would be an awesome bonding episode if Pearl helped Peridot build new limb enhancers. We already know that Pearl can operate modern gem tech and build machinery near in function to modern gem tech, so they could easily build something just as good (if not better) if she worked with Peridot!

I can relate to Peridot about the thing with being short. I've always been short (shorter than my younger sister even these days) and I used to not like being short, especially because I was even further away from being able to successfully reach to things that were higher above me, but perhaps since middle school, I slowly decided that I might as well accept that I'll always be short, and when I was a sophomore in high school, I pretty much began to enjoy being a shorty. Even now I take pride in being short (one of the only very few positive feelings I have about myself) especially because it's beneficial to being sneaky (being short mixed with being light on my feet makes some good ways to startle people when they're not listening carefully, which is funny). There sure as heck are things about being short that make the phrase "bigger is better" big time incorrect. I mean, someone who's bigger can't crawl or squeeze their way into narrow spaces, and again, it helps with being sneaky. And the little phrase I go by is "the smaller you are, the cuter you are" of course I know that there are other ways to be cute, being short just happens to be my favorite ways to indicate that. I should also mention that another good thing about being short is that if I can't reach for something (or can't place something on a high spot), I can just have someone who's taller do that for me, making it one less thing for me to worry about (work definitely proves that).

Here's the thing, they're augmentations, not necessities. They're more like wearing high heels because you want to be taller rather than using a walking cane because you struggle to walk without it. One is out of preference, the other out of necessity. Or for a more high tech example, compare an exosuit to make you stronger vs prosthetic limbs replacing ones you lost - once again, one improves over your existing abilities while the other makes up for a disability. Peridot is not disadvantaged without her limb enhancers, she's just used to being advantaged and reacts badly when it's taken away.

I really hope Peridot does get her limb enhancers back (perhaps Lapis helps her find them, or it'd be interesting if she built herself new ones). And like people have been saying, I don't want her to do some crap like saying she doesn't need them anymore and throwing them into the ocean again. I'd quite like to see her running around happily with her limb enhancers again, that'd be really cute. She doesn't have to use them all the time, I just hope she doesn't stop using them entirely. And I want to see an Era One Peridot.

i think i would want to see her make her own limb enhancers. cause then, it'd be made of metal. so, mimicking her previous version, she makes a couple legs and arm enhancers as well as metal tubes similar to her touch stems. which she controls with her metal bending.

Since Peridots are used for construction and technology, the metal powers WOULD be useful. I think it was this channel that talked about her not poofing when crushed by a boulder but poofed when crushed by Garnet because Peridots are strong against terrain and material objects opposed to gems. I believe the metal powers are useful for construction.

the way I am seeing it is Peridot always had the metal power, but never realized it till 'To Short to Ride' note how her fingers on her limb enhancers floated off her hand but she was still able to control them, she just never tried controlling anything else because she never had the need to until now.

I do hope that she gets an episode where she manages to fuse with someone (Steven, Amethyst, maybe even Lapis). I think it would be interesting if she got "addicted" to fusion, much like Pearl was with Garnet, where she'd want to be fused all the time. Fusion would give her a new sense of usefulness as well as being capable of doing things she couldn't do even with her limb enhancers.

Peridot is one of the funniest characters I've ever seen, EVER!

It looks more like technology dependance to me. For many people their whole world collapses if you take their cellphone or drivers license. Peridot should have the same abilities as other gems, yet she is surprised to see Amethyst casually shapeshifting, kind of how people are completely helpless without GPS. Well, she can not do her technician job without her limb enhancers, but that is the same with real world technicians if you take away their tools. You could argue Peridot is disabled because of her size, but there are many Gems who are as small or thin as she is.

I think that Renaldo might find them, and when he does he's going to bring up another theory.

So I've got to thinking about gem forms recently, and I have a sort of theory (I guess) about them. Basically, there are 6 (known) models for gem forms, each serving a basic function. It's interesting that I found this video (and the one before) because just before, I was thinking about Peridot's form. I think Peridot is actually a lot like Amethyst, in that she should have been taller, specifically resembling Pearl or Lapis, what I call "Court Gems" (name needs work). See I think E2 Peridots were built with a "Mini Court Gem" form, like that of Sapphires, in order to conserve energy. This also explain the limb enhancers which would likely have been low budget accessories. Amethyst would be a "Mini Brute Gem" model by defect, but should simply be a "Brute Gem" like Jaspers and Roses.

I might be stretching on this theory, but what if Homeworld gave these limb enhancers to gems like Peridot to keep them limited to their abilities. For example, Peridot was able to metal bend AFTER her limb enhancers were taken away. What if limb enhancers are a technique to keep these gems from becoming too powerful for the Diamonds to control? I might be stretching but, in all, it's just a theory!

I personally hope somehow she gets the hands and arms back(from a gift from lapis) simply because I really do like the idea that she could have a little bit more mega man tech!

Well, according to Amethyst, gems do have to practice to get "Stronger" When she's talking about her whip, she complains that despite how hard she tries she couldn't swing her whip as hard or fast, due to her slacking off, whereas Pearl trained Steven in fighting, strategy, and physical endurance. Pearl mentions that she used to train there as well, but why would she train if gems can't get physically stronger? In the episode Bismuth, she and the crystal gems spar, which they say they do before battle. I know most of these things can be explained through some other means, but I think there's something else going on. Rose thought gems could be whatever they want, and she was right. Homeworld thought gems can only server a specific function, but they were wrong. What if they're wrong about gems not being able to get physically stronger? What if, because of their morales, they've just never tried to train a non-fighting gem (Such as a pearl or peridot) If Peridot grew up with her limb enhancers her whole life, then of course she would be physically weak. She's never practiced. She's never exercised. But now she has the chance. Now she can train.

If we refer to peridot's power as ferrokinesis it would mean that peridot could only move ferris(think that's the word) metals For example iron If I remember correctly these metals share the property of them all being magnetic

plus the limb enhancers were holding her back. before she lost them peridot had no faith in her own strength to the point she didn't even know she could control metal. losing that weapon was exactly what she needed to grow up

I don't think Peridot has any "disabilities" per se, and I certainly don't believe she NEEDS her limb enhancers. As for the claim that she's "weaker" than other gems, Peridots aren't supposed to be strong. They're technicians. They were made for managing and calculating things, not for fighting things. And if her being smaller and weaker than other gems makes her "disabled," well then Sapphire, Steven, and normal Pearls are "disabled" as well (remember Pearl has stated that she "wasn't built for fighting" and that Pearls are usually just regular servants). The only "disability" Peridot has is that she supposedly "doesn't have gem powers" (such as shape shifting). But at the end of Too Short to Ride her ferrokineses proves she _does_ in fact have powers, she just wasn't aware of them. It's far more likely that she was just given limb enhancers as soon as she was born because Homeworld assumed second generation Peridots were all "defective"; since Peridot had used the enhancers for her entire life, she never had the opportunity to learn if she had powers or not. So in this case, no, Peridot isn't really disabled, and her limb enhancers weren't meant to alleviate a disability like a wheelchair; they were meant to make her "better" than she already was, but ironically ended up stunting her natural abilities. I could understand people claiming she needed them for her "disability" if she straight up didn't have arms or legs, but she does have arms and legs, and there's nothing especially subpar about her except that she's small.

I think that Peridot could have electrical powers similar to the electric discharge in her limb enhancers and could have been used to recharge machines or shortcircuit them when they went out of control or for stopping rouge gems in a matter similar to the gem destabilizer

I think "metalokinesis" might be the most appropriate term to describe Peridot's ability, as the term "ferro" it derived from the Latin "ferrum" meaning iron. Not all metals, and their alloys, have iron.

Peridot's limb enhancers are in the ocean but...gems dont need to breath. i think it would be really cool and sweet if the Crystal Gems went to get them and surprise her with them at some point. just imagine her reaction! i would love to see her with limb enhancers again, she looked so cool. i love smol Peridot too of course.

Peridots metal powers will make her strong enough to survive and even fight well, when she gets used to them. She could become like magneto, and we all know he is pretty strong.

as a semi physically disabled (I have conditions that flare up and make it hard to stand walk or use my wrists at times but usable at other times) and I'm autisitic and have bpd and other mental health issues. ever since peridot lost her limb enhancers she's been very much "me". before then amethyst was my favorite but her threat to throw the tablet in the ocean too, that she was using to handle stress and the loss of her limbs I've started hating her. I've tried to let her grow on me again. I really really dislike her now. it's unforgivable. and actually triggered me from when others did similar things to me.

I think it would be cool if in a battle with Homeworld Peridot takes another Peridots limb enhancements, because what if the way the hands work is through the powers she has. And thus she could be more effective with them now.

Okay hear me out, peridot and lapis should combine their powers to rediscover peridots limb enhancers, she should repair them, and use her ferrokinesis to levitate the arms and use them as an extra pair of floating limbs, it’s been established that peridot is great at multitasking, so she could handle simultaneously operating two sets of arms without too much trouble, and her floating limb enhancers could provide some much needed fire power to her arsenal, plus providing some extra utility like that hologram projector thing, and information screens

I think you should make a Jasper theory about fusion. Specifically I think when she is corrupting and says something along the lines of "Why does no one I fuse with want to stay?" I think this implies she tried fusion before Lapis and they didn't stay with her either. Looking back at Stronger Than You, Garnet says, "But I think you're mad 'cuz you're single". Depending on whether or not Garnet has knowledge of Jasper this could imply that Jasper had a relationship at some time prior. This could explain her aversion to fusion, seeing as it would remind her of heartbreak or just the anger that came along with it.
