Great version of a classical PT song. I love the new jazzy adaptation and the excellent work of Ninet's voice. It really rocks... I can't stop listening to it :)
This is a beautiful rendition.. The ambient bit at 5:24 is stunning, as is the bass & percussion during the preceding keyboard / sax solo section. I'm in love all over again. And, to boot, the man covered his own (previous) band. That's just great.
I love this new version. The great sax solo from the other one is the thing i will miss the most, though. However it is kind of a good thing that this version does not have that solo anymore, because when they used to play the old version live, I couldn't help feeling that it lacked something, because usually they didn't play the sax in concert. Now with this version I can truly and completely enjoy this song live.
This is immense and now complete given its context is now complete with the addition of a female vocal. Ninet nails it. Live it was very moving. She is amazing
+Mark Churchouse that "Squeak" she makes, destroys the song IMO... everything else is superb, but then you hear that squeak again and again and really it's so damn annoying... anyway... do you know if Theo Travis is in the live lineup or who plays the Sax live?... please tell me it isnt just a synth.... cheers :)
+Ricardo Obeso Yes, I've started hearing the squeak as well now and it's getting on my nerves too! Presumably SW likes it, though, as it could have easily been edited out - I guess we'll just have to live with it...
First there is no more PT,get over it,I'm just glad that SW is writing and performing,He always surrounds himself with the very best of musicians,his live shows sound incredible,and as far as Ninet's squeak I think it shows the emotion she brings to the song,she nailed it live and loved every second

The different feel is probably because of Nick Beggs use of a pick and his tone, it's more aggressive and less "jazzy" than Colin's playing, which I also agree suited the song better,
+Maria Diaz Bands don't have owners, PT is a quartet. PT was Wilson band when he playe'd solo on "Mussolini" EP. PT is not Wilson band from 3-rd album. Pink Floyd is Gilmour band?

Honestly this version is awesome in term of the vocalists, and the drumming is pretty solid. I fucking HATE that the replaced the flute bit a really happy sounding electric keyboard. Completely fucks the immersion for me. It's a very somber, slow, winter vibe, and then BOOM, a super chipper keyboard solo? Come on man
+Aellgi There's some excellent chops throughout this version, but I feel like Gavin kept the song moving better. The original is just more in the pocket.
+Rock Barn Records Chris Maitland did the drums on the original. I felt the song benefited from a less busy approach first time round, allowed more space for the song to breathe.
+fuzzylogiceire Gavin has been PT's drummer for so long, I forgot about Maitland, (who was also excellent). I believe I was thinking of The Arriving Somewhere DVD performance.
This is why I miss porcupine tree. Steven Wilson is a genius no doubt, but the music they created together was just perfect. Nothing he does alone compares to what they did together, but then that's just my opinion.
I suppose everybody is saying that they prefer the PT version because they heard it first. I have heard PT's version only few days ago and i think Steven's solo version is far superior. Generally i think Steven solo is making much better music than within PT. Don't Hate Me, PT fans :)
+George David if you really knew steven wilson you'd know he is not as much a progressive artist. ok for ancestral but lissen significant other or whatever it just concerns a part of his style. stop taking yourself for a fucking genius and accept that music is subjective and yes he is a great artist and not the only one

Well i am and a lot of times , its these people who can read and write music who can't jam to simple classic rock riffs. Ability to feel music is more important than being able to read and write music.
I just always hate the comments 'yeah it's good but i like the original one more'. for goodness sake people, if you like that version more go and listen to that version and stop being such a crybaby.
Good to hear another singer! Steve is great but he has an average voice IMO, rather weak. It would be interesting to hear Beggs singing some songs: he has a higher pitch and more power.
No offense but the Porcupine Tree version is much much better! (Not saying this is not good) There's something different about it! That Colin Edwin bass during solo and the trumpets in the middle. All of those made it sound so good I could listen to it all day long!

I really don't understand why he re-recorded this song. Its almost exactly the same with a squeaky woman singing the chorus. There's some subtle changes but in my opinion, but the original is just fine if not better. Perhaps he's trying to get his newer audience into the PT stuff.
