Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on RU-vid. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

This album is a legitimate MASTERPIECE. I think this may be Steven Wilson's magnum opus as a solo artist. It's his best album so far anyway. I suppose he could still release something superior, but... man, HCE is just such an incredible experience. And that is a big thing because I don't think he's had anything less than great albums, really.

I'm a bitter Porcupine Tree fan, but Hand Cannot Erase and The Raven That Refused To Sing are great great solo Wilson albums. .

Superb album - one reference to other music that often gets missed is in that wonderful keyboard solo which is pure homage to Jan Hammer! Recommend BIG BIG TRAIN to you - try a full album reaction to MASTERS OF LIGHT - you’ll love it! Also worth checking out Home invasion at Royal Albert Hall which is this album live with Steven and Ninet singing their hearts out on routine. The dvd is extraordinary

Steven Wilson.. genius. Has a new album (The Future Bites) coming out in January and has released some clips here on youtube. From what I've listened to its a little less prog, but should still be good. The track, Personal Shopper, sounds a bit techno. I do love me some techno. 😁

You're gonna love this album! I think you should check out Norwegian prog rock band Wobbler sometime! I think a good place to start is their song Five Rooms from their most recent release "Dwellers of the Deep"

Close call between Hand and Raven but this is my fave Steven Wilson - not a big fan of stuff after this album so far. I saw this show in Chicago, and Steven was sick and had a very weak voice, so Ninet Tayeb (the female singer that is featured heavily on Hand and was touring with him), had to do a lot of Steven's vocals. She was nothing short of amazing and her performance on the song "Routine" is something to behold. I suggest finding both the Ninet solo version of Routine, and the regular one with the visuals - if you want links let me know but often reactors don't want links - never figured out why but probably alerts copyright vigilantes. The concept of the album is important too - and centers on the true story of Joyce Carol Vincent, where a woman living in a large city dies in her apartment and no one misses her for over two years, despite her having family and friends. Postscript - more Band-Maid please!! That's how I found you to start with. SW is more my usual cuppa (like you I think) but the maids have stolen my heart the last couple of years.

I don't think you've done these so I'd ask for: Bubble - official MV Blooming - MV (not the live, which is chopped for TV) Real Existence - Live 2018 Secret Maiko Lips - their April Fool's version of Secret My Lips which you've done. And to see other sides of the band, "The Dragon Cries" and a beautiful rock ballad "Daydreaming" Thank you for your contribution to spreading the word about our maids.

For me, when Steven Wilson decided to abandon Porcupine Tree, something is 'missing' from his solo work. Hand. Cannot. Erase. is the closest solo album to catching that magic that Porcupine Tree had, in my opinion.

It's your opinion and is unsderstandable you would feel that way. However it's also sad that many fans can get over it. It's like breaking up with one girlfriend and moving on and your relatives still bring that up all the time....even if you already have a new steady girlfriend. I can even go further to say that this behaviour makes it even less likely for them to get together.
