For Steven Wilson videos: • Steven Wilson
Lasse Hoile's video for Remainder the Black Dog, taken from Steven Wilson's second solo album 'Grace for Drowning'.
Grace For Drowning' is the second album released under Wilson's own name, and builds on the artistic inroads he forged with 2009's exceptionally well-received 'Insurgentes.'
A double album ('two 40-45 minute albums in the same package') Wilson has described it as "my biggest project to date".
He continues, "'Insurgentes' was an important step for me into something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it's more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create "journeys in sound" I guess you could call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There's everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz--inspired piece. I've actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records."
The full tracklist is as follows;
CD1:
1. Grace For Drowning (2.00)
2. Sectarian (8.00)
3. Deform to Form a Star (8.00)
4. No Part of Me (5.45)
5. Postcard (4.30)
6. Raider Prelude (2.30)
7. Remainder the Black Dog (9.15)
CD2:
1. Belle de Jour (3.00)
2. Index (4.45)
3. Track One (4.15)
4. Raider II (23.15)
5. Like Dust I Have Cleared From My Eye (8.00)

Rough tune. It's rare that I drop a tune straight after hearing it the first time, but with this one, it was crying out to be played again. I'm not familiar with this guy's work. This only appeared as recommended because I spent a few hours the other day looking through old prog stuff like Magma, Crimson etc. If this is indicative of this guy's work consider me a new fan:)

Steven Wilson's solo work (for the most part) is amazing. Porcupine Tree (his band in hiatus) is pretty good too. Dude is a modern artistic genius.
@Muzykjunkie
@Muzykjunkie 9 лет назад
Be warned though, his music style is truly progressive by definition. One song can sound like this and on the same album you have "Postcard" which sounds nothing like this tune. So if this song is exactly what you are looking for, they won't all sound like this.

Adam Smith You Should Check out the album from where this track is taken, Grace for Drowning. The Raven that Refused to Sing is also a Masterpiece. His last album Hand. Cannot.Erase. is a different approach to prog, but it's a remarkable effort, probably my personal favorite.

Old prog style... it also reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator mixed with King Crimson... Steven Wilson is great at making tunes with a feel of those times.

Cool, I can almost hear where part of Holy Drinker came from around 4:50. One of my favorite things about Steven Wilson is the recurring use of themes; even some stuff from Porcupine Tree is carried over in his solo work and it all melds together nicely.

@@ivan619666 I think it's about a monster, and that monster becoming aware that they are indeed a monster... in a very casual way. Like someone wakes up and thinks: "Uhg, it's time to make the doughnuts... again." Meh'... idk... 🤔 Just my interpretation of it. SW can often be vague in the way he makes his point. Which is polite when discussing such terrible topics... not to scare the children. Also, it's way more fun to be as vague as possible while trying to get your point across in a song. Like a game... 'hide your point in the work'... that so many artists play. If someone else comes up with a different interpretation, all the better. My friend is convinced that SW is a killer that's left bodies all over Europe, and that Scotland Yard should be looking into his lyrics for 'clues'. 🤣 ..................................... 😟 Awkward.
