just a reminder how great this record is. I heard SW play this live and this was the track that moved my metal-head friends to say "that was awesome".

Just about everything Steven Wilson does is golden ( IMO ). My fave track on this album, by far, is Drive Home.

Possibly my favourite SW track. Love the flute and then guitar (Go Guthrie!) focused instrumental piece in the middle. In my top 5 for instrumentals from any song.

Masterpiece from Steven and one of the great assemblies of musicians ever Lucky to see this concert live even though they started late When yer done with this album , a must to do Hand Cannot Erase Just as good just as proggy in different ways While The Raven is one of the saddest songs of all time So , is Routine from Hand You should do the animated videos that go with those 2 songs Then hold back the tears

This album was a huge love letter to classic 70's prog, and in some cases the reference points are pretty transparent. This song is an example. Still pretty awesome.

Hi Justin. Dave from London Thankfully, there's no Ghost In This House (as far as I know!). I get spooked by stories like this, but it's a wonderful song. I especially like the acoustic sections - maybe a little bit like Genesis - where as you say the playing is superb - the piano lines, the acoustic (12 string?) guitar, and Theo Travis' flute. P.S. my song ref Ghost In This House is by Alison Krauss.

The arpeggiated guitar at the start, with the melancholy vocals, and the appropriate flute and keys coloring the part. Lull you into the song, a little less cohesive as it progresses, but still satisfyingly Steven. Superb Sunday wake-up! Cockle-doodle crap, cook the rooster. The Raven can slap! And after 49 years with my ex., I didn't kill her(she did that by herself!). The story kinda hits home!. I'm now much happier alone! But with four great son's , she did throw this old dog, a bone. Peace & Love.✌🤪

Very much sounding of old Genesis -specifically Trespass, and also any early King Crimson.

It is a bit like Nursery Cryme too. Mostly The Musical Box with its soft beginning a HEAVY outro. Hogweed also has a heavy outro.

Yeah, just wow. Reminiscent of early Genesis in places, but without feeling derivative. Masterful.

In my opinion Steven Wilson can do no wrong. That includes his "pop" explorations, like *Personal Shopper* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sX22dFMSNcg.html (And The Watchmaker is an extra level of beautiful.)

Rather slow, inauspicious start, but it serves to tell the story and leads up to the great final section. This is easily Wilson's best solo album and, I know he likes to explore different avenues, but wouldn't it be great if the next one was in this vein. (Pun intended. It's a concept album about death and ghosts and...uh, never mind 😒)

My suggestion JP when U can please always go Live with "Steven Wilson" or "Porcupine Tree" when a song is available here on RU-vid! 'The Watchmaker' is here available Live on RU-vid too... 😎

Very reminiscent of early Genesis, more so than anything else he's done, yet he says he doesn't like them. Odd.

I am gonna write down what I think inspired SW as I listen...having just gone back to the start after hearing the first minute. cinema show intro ant phillips mikey r tony b 12 string mini operas err his voice? Steve hackett? who else ant phillips again Bleak House minus the piano just not as soulful bass pedal mikey R solo john hackett flute sound nice piano bit there mind u yes I'm writin from a black thinkin hat perspective (sorry) very nice backin vocals doo doo ddoos walkin thr u the chaos chords supertramp & tull unite with added tron squishy squidgy 90s metal fuzz solo satriani ? Vai - no idea Supertramp soprano sax these are the child of vision ingredients written as i hear em and hof course there are original bits & bobs or ones that are beyond the bounderies of my prog band back catalogue exposure tara tar Yes Jonisms here what song Long Distant Runaround I reckon or the end of South Side of the Sky nuttin gets past theese eeeeaaarss finely tuned for Chris Squire Geddy Lee isms Yyz ha! On cue just to prove that my instincts were right This inddeeeedy is a TRIBUTE. to all the above and yes it works. He's thankin all the bands this last bit could be KC but i'm oblivious to them it also sounded familiar but it got the better of me. i wonder wot it was? Great Fun. Like an A.I. embodyment of the last 50 years.

TBH you could do the same with any piece of Nouveaux Prog or you could just listen and enjoy it for what it is rather than trying to pick it apart.
@HippoYnYGlaw
@HippoYnYGlaw Год назад
@@scifimonkey3 the process, an instinctive reaction to the first minute , helped me appreciate the talent eventually. My cynicism has a conduit which saw it dissipate. A rewarding experience , done in real time which ,dare I say it meself, afforded me an opportunity to tap my own shoulder and massage my rather soggy prog fan credentials. He wears his heart on his sleeve here doesn't he. I've just listened to Andy Edwards' discussion on Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder and can now appreciate why I am cynical re Nouveaux Prog. Biology. Culture. Personal History. with Marketing and Context / Timeline added for good measure. A good discussion which hopefully will lead it's way into... Cymatics. In which case, Peace and Love to you ,Friend. :>)

Isn't this just one beautiful piece of music? Somehow - I think it's the use of the sax - it reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator.

Probably my least played track on the album, but nonetheless a crucial part of one of my fav SW solo albums. I think the only thing it's lacking is some cohesion between sections but I can often look past that.

I like the piano section, but overall, while the song is typical Wilson (intricate, clever, complex, perfectly produced) as with a great deal of his "solo" work, it leaves me cold.

Many of Steven Wilson's tracks are a regurgitation of past works by older artists, and this track is no exception. It's as if he tried to create a monster from an amalgamation of Genesis, King Crimson, Magma, Yes, ELP and co. That doesn't make it interesting though. It leaves me cold. A lot of technique for little or no emotion at all ! Although Wilson proceeded in the same way in his early years with Porcupine Tree, his early compositions were still more successful and sounded more spontaneous.

You have to give it to Steve Wilson, for all the talent this man obviously has he always finds somewhere in the song to screw it up..what a shame

No, still not getting Steven Wilson's solo work. It doesn't grab me and I want to leave it and look for something else that will keep my attention. Oi, Stevie, little tip for you: Next time you want to make an album, give your mates Richard and Gavin a call and invite them over first, okay?
