Those terms were not used when I was learning the grip, so before I make my guess I'm going to say that you should probably ask the person who originally told you that what they meant exactly. I take what you have said to mean that if you were to draw a line out from your wrist, that line splits the two mallets roughly evenly. This should be the case for most intervals unless you are going extremely wide or extremely narrow, which will be only in, well, extreme cases. I hope that helps.
