It might seem silly to you, but Steve agreed to an interview on one condition: He needed me to watch his shopping cart while he ran behind a building to relieve himself. I was honored. A homeless persons shopping cart contains their entire world. Steve was saying he trusted me.
My honor was short-lived. Homelessness and pushing a buggy are not new to me. I have even written about my own experience pushing my life in a shopping cart. When Steve left me alone with that buggy, I was not expecting the swell of emotions that came with it. Cars drove by, and people gawked. I felt the shame and public humiliation all over again. It was a horrible experience!
But it is a part of Steves daily life.
Most inner-cities feature the stark contrast of wealth and poverty, and Hollywood is no different. Famous television shows are taped feet away from where this interview takes place. Ironically, Steve came to Los Angeles to sell a screenplay. But like so many others, he found Hollywood to be the boulevard of broken dreams.
Steves day starts by pushing a shopping cart in search of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass. He spends the money on beer and cigarettes while eating entirely out of trash dumpsters.
To put it mildly, Steve is a character. I really enjoyed our conversation, and I think you will, too. He says he is on the streets because he is a tough romantic who still holds on to his dream. And after our interview, I believe him. What do you think?

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

This dude has something about him. His 50's style radio speaker voice, his "I'll pull trough"-attitude and his manners and way of speaking. This dude needs a platform.

The Buddha said, “never feel sorry that you are living a difficult life”. This guy knows the secret, whatever it is... I wouldn’t be surprised to see him credited for the screenplay in a money making film! I don’t think he’s exceptionally knowledgeable but I could imagine myself sitting down with him and listening to all he has to say... I just hope cigarettes and alcohol don’t do him in before he gets the huge payday he seems to deserve!

There were things I didn't really appreciate about his attitude until I started thinking about it. Namely, it sort of sounds like he chose to live on the streets, but he's doing it because he doesn't want to do anything other than what he loves, whereas far too many people give up on their dreams and live their lives working a job they could care less about. I wish this guy the best of luck and I'll be the first one at the theater if "The Late Bloomer" ever gets released.

Steve has am AMAZING voice. He really should be doing voice over work, commercials for radio and tv, or documentaries. He has an alcohol problem, but so do many actors and writers with big careers. I am reading a biography about William Faulkner, who had terrible problems with alcohol, but always had someone who would sober him up and work with him. I am not judging Steve, but it seems that he has talent. Maybe someone will find him, take the time to bring out his talents.

This is my favorite interview ever. This man is very interesting. I have a good friend that is similar. But my friend david is kind of a leach. I had to quit enabling him to be how he is. Not that this man is anything like my friend. He just sounds like him. My friend is basically houseless. He stays on boats that he works on at the marina by asking the owners for a free stay. Also he figured out a way to sleep at his storage space. I finally refused to enable his scam.

This guy cracked me up. He should have done voice overs and or radio. I agree with him. The living of life sucks, but being alive to experience the suckyness is better than being dead. Interesting Mark ended with "What's your last words" instead of "Three wishes." What's his update, now, eleven years later? Since he kept saying "ladies," what he could have done was meet one, and if things got to that point, if she had an extra bedroom, he could have been her live in boyfriend, and do yard work for neighbors to help pay bills, until someone took him up on his offer for the screen play, and he could have used his skills from managing the hotel to try to oversee an acting company, where he could write other screen plays for the stage actors. And, I'm glad he was honest about getting cigarettes and beer. But, good hustle, with the cans and bottles.

I don't think he's a good enough writer to make it. If he's been writing for all those years and still no success then maybe he needs to try something else. I know this might sound negative or cruel. But he has given away one very big clue as to why he is probably not a good writer. And that is because he talks too much. He constantly interrupted the other guy. Great writers are observers and listeners. They observe people and events and they listen more than they talk. This is what feeds their imagination. They are never big talkers like this guy. He has the looks to be a great actor .... and the voice too. I hope he changes his direction and goes for something else. Hopefully he wil find success and happiness.
