"Stevie just waking up then warming up also featuring Ron J?" .......................................................................................................
This was filmed at Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, January 24, 1986 by Greg Savage of Savage Guitar Design and was used with his permission. Greg was a roadie / tech at the time and knew Stevie well, I had an email conversation back then with Greg and he told me the background story. He was happy to share the video here.
I remastered in 2012 to remove VHS degradation for greatly improved sound and video quality. It was was posted here first in 2013 unfortunately it has been duplicated by a few other users without permission and to the detriment of sound quality.
Either way it has had a huge impact and as a life long fan I'm happy to present this video to help keep Stevie's memory alive and to introduce his great work to younger generations. I have had many great messages from young people who are just now discovering this legend of modern blues.

Met Stevie personally 3 times, all in DFW, once backstage at Will Rogers Auditorium, then at a record company party for the "Live Alive" release and then him and Lenny at a personal residence, each time he was more graceful, humble and polite than the first. Other so called guitar gods take notes please. R.I.P SRV

Greatest sound check ever. I got to Stevie 2 months before he died in Wisconsin. He played at Harriet Island in St Paul. Still trying to find the bootleg for that to give to a friend of mine. I can easily find the bootleg from Harriet Island from the year before, but not the one we seen 2 months before he died.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, "May I have a talk with you"? I know you're "Scuttlebuttin'" in Heaven, but I have a "Superstition" that you "say what" you mean to say and play what you mean to play, which to me would be considered a "pride and joy". You no longer have to walk the "tightrope", because you are taking new Heaven "life by the drop". You are easily my favorite improvised and original bluesy artist, and thank goodness you do not have to worry anymore about "the Crossroads" or any "Texas Flood". Your debt is paid in full, and you now have an abundant surplus. I only have one "little wing", but if you could, please embrace me with your glorious, broad, angelic feathers someday. You will always be my favorite. Thank you for all of the positive and soulful influence that has impacted very many lives.

@Glasmania I have a friend who's a really good guitarist, and he said pretty much the same thing. I asked him to watch this, since I was amazed how they could all just be chilling, yawning, having their morning coffee, and then SRV goes off like a rocket and the band comes in as if it's nothing. My friend worships SRV, but he said that this isn't really surprising... they're all pros, and they've done this hundreds of times together, so it really is no big deal for them.

When power eventually came back on Stevie came on stage and said “We came to play for you and we’re not leaving until we’re finished”. They finished the set and it went on until about 2am. Saw SRV at Pine Knob in Michigan in 1987. Every note was just amazing. He didn't throw anything away. When he plays a line he enunciates every note. And each one, each little nuance of those notes, they are fried in your head, you can't turn away. As good a musical performance as I ever saw. Prince was up there. I am not really able to think of anyone else who came close. I've seen a lot of shows. He had gotten clean when I saw him, it was a very uplifting kind of vibe at that show. It was churchy. He wanted to testify, he seemed like he really wanted us to know he was grateful to be clean, to be playing music. He had stuff on his mind. A lot of gratitude. It felt really special, it was way more than just some blues guitar flamethrower show. He really transcended expectations.

Clapton once said something similar in an interview years after his death. "We played on the same bill on his last two gigs. On the first night, I watched his set for about half an hour and then I had to leave because I couldn't handle it. I knew enough to know that his playing was just going to get better and better. His set had started, he was like two or three songs in, and I suddenly got this flash that I'd experienced before so many times whenever I'd seen him play, which was that he was like a channel. One of the purest channels I've ever seen, where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down. That's what it was like to listen to. And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself."

You’re probably a fine player, just have to find your own “spot” and please, don’t ever compare yourself to anyone else: *Every player is unique and so are you.* Now go lock yourself in somewhere and do nothing but play most all day every day until you think you’re “OK.” Truth is, no one ever thinks they’re all that good because the competition with yourself is the toughest “rival,” the highest standards you’ll ever aspire to: We’re just never satisfied with our own playing, truly. Enjoy yourself-it’s suppose to not only be a process of learning, discovering, mastering etc. but a deep joy. We loose that feeling when we kinda forget why we started doing this in the first place ;-)

He treats his practice like a performance in front of folks because he's a real musician. Not just serious about when an audience is there but serious about music he's playing all the time. They way he play when people are present is the way he always plays. He's the most expressive. If you're only into a crowd present when playing then you can't be a true hearted musician like SRV and you most likely won't sound good audience or not.

It's too showy, too loud. How about that? I like them more like Garcia, with personality and emotion, pathos dripping with americana..... how is the technical part of guitar playing more important? It isn't, or otherwise we wouldn't need music to judge these guys, we'd just have them all go up and down the same scale, like robots. Same exact thing goes for Jon Mayer, he's technically brilliant and unbelievable skilled, but that really isn't the point. The beauty of the music is, and the style in which they express the music. Mayer simply shows off to much.

The first time I saw SRV was when he was opening for Robert Plant on his Now and Zen tour. It was at an amphitheater called GreatWoods in MA I had no idea who he was, I was there to see Plant and I'm sure it was the same for about 95% of the people there. When he came out on stage I was (without exaggeration) one of about 20 people actually in our seats, he looked out at us, looked at his band, and then ripped into the nastiest bluesiest guitar solo I'd ever heard, after a few minutes his band jumped in and the just they just rocked the place. With in 10 minutes every seat was full of people all saying "Wholly shit who is this guy!" He made like 8000 fans in 10 minutes, and for the rest of his show he just tore our faces off. I'd never seen music pour through a man like that before, I've seen people who could play Clapton, VanHalen, Vai, I even saw John Lee Hooker. Those guys could play, with SRV it just seemed to flow out of him.

I had the honor to see him play 9 times so many years ago now. I still get goose bumps when I listen to his amazing tone, and the emotion he played with. He played one show at a Polish American Beach club in Mass. He was going to play with the Stray Cats, who didn't show up. He played for three hours. It started pouring rain at one point. He stopped playing the song (Come on), and started playing Texas Flood. It was the best show I ever saw. People screaming, ten feet from the stage, and me staring. He looked around while playing some amazing licks, and looked right at me. He gave a thumbs up and a smile to this mesmerized guy, and then right back into it. A moment I won't ever forget.

SRV! I only got to see him once. Back in '84. But I still remember that day like it was yesterday. The gig was fabulous, of course. Afterward, there was a group of us wanting an autograph. I brought along my Texas Flood album. Will never sell it! One of my friends waiting with me had some problems at home before he got to the gig, and forgot his album, and had nothing to sign. There was a "Lobby---->" sign near us, (a make shift piece of cardboard, not metal or something that would be missed by the venue) and was to use that. When he handed it to SRV, he looked at it and laughed a little saying, "You kiddin' me, man?" He then turned to a guy standing near him and said a few words I couldn't make out, while gesturing to a few leather bags a few feet away. He pulled out a promo 8x10 glossy of Stevie playing live and signed it, giving it to my friend. I have much respect for the elders. But no one could match SRV's skill, style, and being a good human, like he was. R.I.P. Stevie! You are sorely missed!!

Hey PGeorge...I seen him in 86 in Spokane Opera House. He was headlining...Bonnie Raitt opened for him and after her show she came back out and played w/Stevie. My wife bought tickets for this 16.50 a piece and was center/4th row. She actually asked if she did good. She was unaware of what she was about to experience. She had only heard of him because I spoke about it and listened to him at home. So her gift was one that I still reach over and give her an occasional hug for. Fabulous show in a setting that had excellent sound...what a memory! I do indeed miss the man who brought the guitar back into the limelight in the midst of being bombarded by shitty new wave bands. he was a shining light in the music industry in the mid 80's.

@jackcoleman1784 5 лет назад
I understand what you were going for with this comment but to say SRV was "talented" actually robs him of the recognition he deserves in my opinion. What you are seeing and hearing in this video is the culmination of thousands upon thousands of hours of hard work and dedication on the part of mister Stevie Ray Vaughn not even taking his band into account. Typically people that don't actually seriously play music have this nebulous concept of "talent". The reality is that noone is born able to play. Greats are made not born and SRV worked to an insane degree to bring this to us.
@VamsiMohanKrishnaVadrevu
@VamsiMohanKrishnaVadrevu 5 лет назад
@@jackcoleman1784 This is the ultimate truth. All the talk of child prodigies and born with talent is bogus. The amount of hours they've put into "perfect" practice makes them look like geniuses. Highlight on the "perfect" "accurate" practice. because all musicians have certain things that they struggle with. So these items have to be worked on constantly and rigorously. There's no talent. It's just practice. Musicians are made by what they hear in their childhood (and are influenced by) and what they've worked on through their formative years.

@@kellicouch5883 The Backyard was in Bee Caves near where Bee Cave rd hits '71. I saw a lot of great shows there including Willie, ZZ Top but never Stevie. June of '83 is when Texas Flood came out so it easily could have been as they were hosting a lot of great shows in those days. Glad you got to see him play. It was beyond amazing. When he played Tin Pan Alley I always thought he would snap the next of that Stratocaster he would bend it so much. OK... so here is another great memory from those days. Antone's was up on Guadalupe just north of campus. The Fabulous Thunderbirds with Jimmy Vaughn and Kim Wilson were the house band. When guys like Robert Cray, BB King, Buddy Guy and so many others would come through Stevie would often show up about midnight if he didn't have a gig, they would lock the doors at 2:00 and stop selling alcohol but you could stay in and watch them jam till late in the morning... thanks for letting me ramble down memory lane.

@guitar78ish
@guitar78ish 8 лет назад
Actually, SRV gave his life to Christ at an early age, but the music lifestyle led him down a self destructive path and it was his recommitting himself to Jesus in the late 80's that gave him the strength to overcome drugs and alcohol. Here's a letter from his mother: www.srvrocks.com/links-marthavaughan.html
@guitar78ish
@guitar78ish 8 лет назад
***** Did you bother to read the letter by SRV's mother? Yes he was an addict for a time, but he overcame it and turned his life around with the help of Christ. God's grace is something that unbelievers don't understand.
@guitar78ish
@guitar78ish 8 лет назад
***** If you bothered to read the letter you would see a snip from SRV's private journal that his mother included which read:"God...I pray that I be cleansed/washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Born again. I pray that I may be of use to you as you see fit. Help me that I may do my part. Amen." .........."God has been very good to me. He is good to all life. The willingness to try to work on my health is another and I am grateful for this opportunity." .........."Altho I can get confused about life and it's lessons, I can say that I am trying very hard to learn. I can see that I am learning how to care for others and for myself. Slowly sometimes, but surely nevertheless. I can play beautiful music. This is a gift that God has given me and a gift that I do my best to use for good and give it all I have. I am loved by many of God's children for this, and because it does show that I am trying to grow in this life. God saved me among so many and I must accept that he has a purpose for me. If I am good enough for God, I should be good enough for me. Thank you, God!"

IMO, when a musician dies at their peak, it can sometimes be a good thing. There are plenty of musicians who have lived long lives and continued to simply play rehashed versions of their own songs and covers of others. Basically a shell of their former shelves. It is true that SRV could have produced plenty of music that was at the same level. But, if he had not crashed, things would unquestionably be different than they are perceived today. Some musicians that I love/loved that died young are Morrison, Croce, Hendrix, Allman and plenty others. I think their status has been elevated because they died young, so we romanticize their works, because we know there will never be more. Like I said, this is just my opinion.

Some people are just born with something extra . this gift of his is what made him a cut above the rest . he plays with such feeling that it affect us in a powerful way, that makes us feel the music intensely . i guess that's what they mean when they say, "that man has soul' . he was born to play the guitar . his death was devastating to all who loved his music . in Dallas, the day he died, we mourned by having a street party blasting his music . no one called the police . people just came out to be together and share our loss.
