You asked so I’ll comment. I’ve played guitar, just casually, but listen intently, live and recorded, to so many guitarists of all styles over the last fifty years. I had the pleasure of seeing SRV live, once. He is on a while different level for all the reasons you mention; fluidity, natural musicality, and unparalleled skill. Amazing.

Stevie made people who had never touched a guitar want to pick one up, and people who have been playing for 20 years want to put theirs down. Most folks pay attention to what his left hand is doing on the fretboard, but very few notice what his right hand is doing down on the body. He was always tweaking things to get "the sound." Watch him work the pickup selector switch, volume, and tone controls. He played the entire instrument. And he did it so smoothly, most folks never noticed he'd done it.

I think comparing guitarists is like comparing fruit. Some like apples, some like oranges. For me I give Stevie the edge. A legend at rock and blues. I saw him live twice. The 2nd time was the night he died. To watch great players like Stevie, brother Jimmie, Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray was unbelievable. Just to be woke up on the morning to hear from from my brother in law that Stevie had died leaving to go to Chicago by helicopter, changed me forever. I miss you Stevie.

There are a tremendous amount of great musicians out there and some of them stand out more than others, but I have to say that Stevie Ray Vaughan is the best of the best! His live videos are a treat and a sight to behold. His playing is so precise and funky and wild and bluesy, and he rocks on that guitar and in his singing. I love his raspy voice--I love his SWAG, his style--everything about him. Not too many performers move me, but he always does. I'm in awe of this man's talent and am sad that he was taken so young. His band, Double Trouble, is great as well. Their timing during his playing is impeccable. This version of VooDoo Chile Live from Austin, Texas, is my favorite. He never played a song the same way but he was self-taught and had a God-given gift and you can't get any better than that! If you want to hear SRV in mellow-mode, listen to his live performance on Riviera Paradise!

I don't think I'm in any position to say who is the best of all time, however I can say with the utmost confidence I don't know if I ever truly FELT music until I discovered SRV. Thanks for bringing a present to all of us today❣️‼️. A great reaction to my favorite all-time artist👏🙌💯. "Touched by God" the best quote yet and very perceptive of you. Stevie said at age 7 he picked up the guitar and a damn broke inside him. He devoted every waking moment after that teaching himself to play. He always said he knew he had a gift from God and that if he ever started to take credit for that gift as if it was of his own making he knew he would lose the gift. He vowed to play each time like it was the last time and give it everything and he did. As masterful and wonderful as this performance is (and it is) his performance of this in Toyko is next level. He was loose and flowing and just kept riffing and doing runs and weaving back into the melody for 15 minutes. You should check it out even if not reacting. Because you have "heard" his music more than watched him you are in for some true excellence and magic. Watching him just lose himself and let the music flow through him is a spiritual experience as he was touched by the hand of God. His versatility in skills sets are hard to believe. He has composed some truly beautiful songs like Lenny, Riveria Paradise, Aint Gone 'N' Give Up On Love to name just a few. But I would suggest you react to Tin Pan Alley performed in Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It features Johnny Copeland, another OG Texas blues man. It is a master class in down and dirty blues. Subbing for more Stevie Ray🎸🎶👋💙

"Be like water ... the fluidity" ... makes total sense. His movement style on stage is smooth as 15 year old Scotch. Its humble, soulful and real. Stevie had/has those sexy swagger moves & struts too like when he casually walks towards the tuning amps in "Life Without You", He was so down to earth he probably didn't realize he even had 'sexy swagger'. From what I gathered, SRV did not let his personal life or LIVE performances be controlled. Definitely not choreographed either. Had Stevie EVER ALLOWED some stage manager talk him into adding a few personal dance moves w/the guitar behind his back & a dozen half-naked men and women jumpin', twistin' and twerkin' behind him while he performs "Crossfire" {ironically!} for the 1,000th time, his career would have definitely suffered. I was not as fortunate as a hundred others to have seen Stevie Ray LIVE .. However, if I couldn't find me a genie in a bottle to grant 3 wishes, I would give up my right arm a 100 x's to the 'crossroads' devil just to see him play 1 TIME 😎✌..

Thing is...there are many versions of every song he did out there. All the same..sorta..but each distinctly different. He couldn't read or write music...but while the melody was there and recognizable, he played by feel 'in the moment' and his "embellishments" varied each time it was played. On that subject, an interviewer once asked his older brother Jimmy (lead guitar for The Fabulous Thunderbirds) : "Does Stevie ever play a song the same way twice?"; to which Jimmy quipped, "Hell, Stevie never plays a song the same way ONCE!" 🤓👏 Epic.

SRV Is hands down one of the best guitar players of all time. One of the things that sets him apart from every other guitar players is that he used 13 gaged strings. Most all guitar players, myself included use either 8,9, or 10 maybe 11...... 13 gage are like Base strings, you have to have fingers of steel to bend 13's, and SRV makes it look easy. I've seen and heard some very very good guitar players in my 60 years of life. My top 10 ( not in any order ) 1. SRV, 2. Gary Moore, 3. Roy Buchanan, 4. Derek Trucks, 5. Rory Gallagher, 6. Alvin Lee, 7. Gary Clark Jr, 8. Duane Allman, 9. BB King, 10. Albert King. And a few who come very close. Eric Clapton, Samantha Fish, Slash, Walter Trout, Joe Bonamassa,...... Sorry, when I get to talking about the guitar and guitar players I get carried away lol. Love your Channel, keep up the hard work!!!

Not only were his strings 13 gauge through most of his career but he also had an extremely high bridge that would just kill anyone else’s fingers trying to play his setup. He also played every piece of the guitar constantly switching his pickups, tone and volume.

I see folks discussing whose better SRV or Van Halen and it’s like comparing apples and oranges really. HOWEVER, having just said that lol, in MY opinion no one could touch Stevie. Even on others’ best day and he his worst, UNTOUCHABLE!

I read that Stevie was clear and concise, Hendrix was fuzzy. Also read Stevie could play Hendrix but Hendrix could never play Stevie.

Stevie didn't play the guitar...they existed on the same plane.

*INSTA SUBSCRIBED* I appreciate your thoughtful approach bro so I'm in. Regarding Stevie, I would have to agree. Although my heart wants to say Jimmy Page or Al Di Meola, Stevie was touched.! *THE BEST EXPLANATION I HAVE EVER HEARD* came from another guitar god *Eric Clapton* ! The first time he said he heard him was in the car on the radio and he had to pull over because he got emotional AND he was TRYING to figure out what he was doing. The NEXT time, and when he saw him in person he said "Stevie doesn't play music, it *channels* thru him. What I wouldn't have given to have seen him at least once.... Damm.......

Woaaah! Thanks for the story and history! SRV is just something else! Channels thru him seems absolutely correct!

SRV was a true unique talent who had a connection to the guitar that doesn't come around very often. Here is a recommendation: "Leave My Girl Alone" from that same Austin City Limits show. Tons of power and intensity. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vdxF48KfYNA.html

You know, some guitar work you can "pretend to be playing" when you're listening in the bath.......but not this stuff. Not even the wildest imagination can pretend to play like SRV. Oh what a loss he is. Merry Christmas and may 2023 be good to us all.
